I'm genuinely curious why these kind of restaurants are famous? Like if you want authentic malay food...why don't just go to kedai makan malay?

I'm banned from that forsaken sub so I can't reply or post there, so I took it here to ask this question because I'm very very curious because my friend have told me like, they love these kind of restaurants because they're authentic malay food, and I'm like...then just go to kedai makan malay? But hey, maybe I'm missing some perspectives here so that's why I'm asking you guys, why does these "malay" restaurants are popular?

Kedai makan malay in this context, i mean: Your everyday , normal, small owned kedai makan, not roadside, but like a proper kedai makan, very common outside of KL and in Selangor area such as Bangi, Kajang, Shah Alam (that I know of). The not super commercialized or higly priced

Sorry this sub doesn't allow me to link the OOP post, but credit to: u/nightfishing89

Almost fight with someone 2x my size in Bicep cuz of smoking

Socially awkward me went out to meet people at a restaurant yesterday. They pick outdoor seating.

At one point, some dude with exploding biceps and an invisible earpiece(think secret agent) walks over right before the parking area of the shop and starts smoking away...around 4 steps distance from my table

The 2nd hand smoke blew into my face.

So I walked over to him...told him to move a bit further, but the smoke made me dizzy.

I pat him a bit and tell him to please move further a bit in blurry speech and haze.

When I sat back down, the dude was staring at me like he wanna kill someone, lashed out at me, saying I touched him and wanna touch me back. (finish his smoke on the spot without moving an inch)

After awhile dude sat down at his table of secret agents crew and keep staring at me.

I duno what got to me I just go over and demand why he so mad when im the one suffering from his 2nd hand smoke.

Talk got quite heated, suddenly the light pat became "i pushed him" and his buddy backed him up saying he know the law and anywhere outside the premise line is consider ok for smoking. and I cannot touch ppl cuz they can sue me.

My table ppl helped by talking to their crew so that both them and me cool down abit and shook hand after some more.

I can't get over this, very annoyed for 2 days++

What do y'all do instead?

>Five-foot way and within three meters from the distance of the building lineAnalysis

For several categories of places, the regulation prohibits smoking inside the “building,” which includes “the five-foot way and within three meters from the distance of the building line, and also includes the area covered by any additional permanent roof that is connected to the main building.” These specified places include: public transportation terminals; Parliament of Malaysia; stadiums, fitness centers, and gymnasiums; places used for religious purposes; and places of work.

Curious why are Dates (Kurma) a once a year affair?

I've recently been obssesed with eating dates & started using it as a pre-workout snack as it's a much better alternative compared to those energy bars given that dates is purely natural, provide fast-digesting carbs , natural sugars and high in fibre. It's legit like nature's "superfood".

However, the only time I start seeing others consuming dates is when "yusuf taiyoob 😂" starts appearing on the radio during ramadhan/hari raya period. But I'm so curious why this isn't more of an everyday thing here?

Malaysians! What actually makes you choose Shopee, Lazada, or TikTok Shop these days?

I've noticed that I don't always buy from the platform with the lowest listed price anymore. Sometimes it's because of vouchers, sometimes it's shipping fees, and sometimes it's just because I trust one platform more. For you, what's the deciding factor? Do you compare across multiple platforms before buying, or do you usually stick to one?

stage 4 breast cancer - meds not covered by insurance

hi, my mum (early 60s) was recently diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasised to her bones. no prior diagnosis to this.

for her specific cancer biomarker, she was recommended endocrine therapy and targeted therapy pills.

the problem is these are take home medications which are very expensive monthly and insurance doesn’t cover take home medications under cancer! insurance agent kept telling me they recognise chemo and radio, and it’s their first time hearing a case where standard first line of treatment is only “pills”.
i’ve gotten our doctor to write a formal letter to insurance on why my mum’s cancer requires this treatment instead of chemo/radio but who knows how long it will take for an answer and we have no idea if it’ll be a positive outcome.
has anyone has gone through a similar issue appealing to insurance about this?
appreciate any help i can get. thanks.

How present was/is your family in your choice of life partner?

I've always assumed people date first and then only bring them to meet family members when they're sure they want to marry each other?

I also know some people would even bring family chaperones along on dates so that they won't be alone together, especially in more conservative cultures.

Which both of these very different approaches made me wonder what it is like for Malaysians? I know we're all very different depending in cultural background and I guess how conservative or "metropolitan" your family and upbringing environment is, so maybe there would be answers from all parts of the spectrum.

QV-E or E.mas 5 is better ?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently deciding between the Perodua QV-E and the Proton e.MAS 5, and I’d like to hear your opinions.

I drive around 112 km every working day
(PJ ↔ KLIA), and I’m planning to keep the car for a long time.

For those who have experience with either car (or EVs in general), which one would you choose and why?

I’d also appreciate any thoughts on:
\- Real-world driving range
\- Charging convenience
\- Reliability
\- Maintenance costs
\- Long-term ownership experience

Thanks !

Is it rude for my colleague to tell me “learn to speak Chinese”?

Actually more than one colleague and my superior has told me so. First time was within the first week of me joining the company, and a superior told me “you need to learn to speak chinese” during dinner with alot of my other colleagues. He did say this in a lighthearted tone, then later on said he was also previously a banana, but has now picked up Chinese as its important for working in sales. My direct supervisor has also told me that “I can always learn” to speak Chinese when she discovered I could only speak English.

Last week this happened again, when I was having lunch with 3 other colleagues. One of the girls asked our colleague from overseas if they could speak Chinese, they said yes. Then she looked at me and went “See, its also time that you learn Chinese”. Which I found borderline rude, so I asked our overseas colleague if majority of people in her country spoke English instead of Chinese, to which she replied yes.

Whats more fustrating is that I applied to this US MNC because I thought it would be a good fit to my background, but turns out everyone is still expecting me to speak Chinese. Training and workshops are fully conducted in English, majority of the time by angmohs even. But my team is majority Chinese, with some Malays.

I grew up in an international school and studied in the UK, so its not that I dont want to learn how to speak Chinese, but there was rarely opportunities for me to do so because it wasnt taught in school. I know I can always go for lessons and pick up the language now, but its hard to find time for that within my work schedule. And frankly, all the rude remarks I gotten on my Chinese speaking abilities have kind of put me off from even wanting to speak the language. I know theres nothing much I can do about it but just wanted to rant a bit.

Edit: Wanted to add that I have never in my life told someone to “learn to speak English”, because I find it inherently rude and dismissive of what someone’s life circumstances might be. So its hard for me to comprehend how someone telling me to learn Chinese can be coming from a good place, especially when most these comments come from colleagues I only met once or twice before.

One job vs. Side hustles: What’s your reality right now?

With the cost of living shooting up, I’m curious about how people are actually coping.

Are you surviving on just your main job, or have you been "forced" into a second income stream to keep up with the bills? How is everyone holding up?

Looking for a serious long term relationship

Hi, I thought I'd put myself out there and see where this goes. I’m 28F from Penang and I’m looking for a genuine, long-term relationship with someone who values honesty, communication, and mutual respect. I'm not interested in casual dating or playing games.

A little bit about myself:
- I’m 158cm, 48kg
- I appreciate a good sense of humor and believe relationships work best when both people can be themselves.
- I enjoy exploring new places, watching movies, reading, hiking, going to the gym and joining races on my free time

I'm hoping to meet someone who is emotionally mature, sincere, and looking for a real connection. Feel free to hmu if you’re interested.

Disclaimer:
A lot of you guys have bern accusing me of trying to scam people, i do not, i can get by with my own money I’m financially independent, the reason i posted this here is because i genuinely trying to find someone, i’d tried dating apps before and almost all of them are only looking for hookup and the man that i know in real life are either taken or not interested in relationships so i thought of trying to get to know someone from here, i understand that some of you might have bad experiences with someone from reddit but it’s kinda rude to just make assumptions of a person based on what you had encountered before, kindly just ignore it if you’re not interested, you dont have to accused me of something that i didnt do

Has Malaysia been effected by these misogynistic trends?

This is a genuine question for anyone who has been observing the current state of social media right now. Ive seen a surge of pretty misogynistic content on tiktok as of recently (mostly from americans) and i start to wonder if this has affected the mindset of malaysians as well? I know that things like; redpill and incel content have existed before but im seeing it slowly become more of a trend with people creating new words like "hiplets" (describing a woman with prominent hip dips) and "foids" which i still dont really understand the meaning of yet.

Have guys met any malaysians who unironically use these words before?

Academic Survey

Hi everyone! I’m a university student currently conducting a capstone research project on users’ acceptance of AI-based tools in neonatal healthcare monitoring and analytics.

This study aims to understand how different groups — including healthcare professionals, parents, caregivers, and individuals with future parenting intentions — perceive and accept AI-assisted neonatal healthcare technologies.

The survey takes around 10–15 minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous and used strictly for academic purposes.

You do not need to be a healthcare professional to participate — all relevant experiences and perspectives are welcome.

If you are a:

  • Healthcare professional (doctor, nurse, hospital staff, etc.)
  • Parent or caregiver of a newborn
  • Expectant parent
  • Individual planning to become a parent in the future
  • Family caregiver or guardian

Your participation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Question for the mixue staff

I usually order the latte/coffee drinks. And i would order them half sugar. Sometimes the staff said, they dont use sugar, they use syrup pumps, and said they use 2 pumps. So ofc,i ask 1 pump la. Goes fine for a while, and then today i order again, the mixue staff said company SOP, either no sugar or addon sugar only. WTF kind of bullshit is this?u use sugar or u use syrup? and when i want to reduce sugar/syrup content, ur staff said cannot. Mixue got weekly sop change or what?Cb

Malaysians! Where do you put thoughts that are too small for therapy but too heavy to ignore?

Not everything is a crisis. But some thoughts still take up space.

Bad workday. Family tension. Feeling behind. Random anxiety. Something someone said that stayed in your head. A decision you keep avoiding.

For stuff like that, where does it go?

Do you talk to friends? Write it down? Keep it in your head? Use ChatGPT? Voice memo? Sleep and hope it disappears?

I’m curious whether people actually want a private place to process these everyday thoughts, or whether most people prefer to just move on.

I’m asking because I’m building a small app called Ditlo around this idea: a diary/chat space for everyday reflection, especially for the thoughts that don’t feel “serious enough” to bring anywhere else.

But I’m still trying to understand the behavior before assuming the product is useful.

Would something like that help you, or would it feel unnecessary / too private / too weird because AI is involved?

Not trying to hard sell. I’m more interested in where people already put these thoughts today.
