there's something growing on my jade??
I have no clue what this could possibly be. it might be a mantis egg sack . but I'm not really sure it just appeared like within yesterday or today. I've been checking it pretty often because it just got replanted in a different pot
i3 to i4 taking a bit too long?
Hey everyone,
My Hierodula majuscula (Giant Rainforest Mantis) last moulted on July 30th, but she’s still not showing any obvious signs of pre-moult.
Her temperature stays steady around 24–25°C with 60–70% humidity, and she has plenty of vertical clearance in her enclosure for when she does decide to shed.
Is this kind of timeline normal for this stage? How long do they usually take between moults? Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!
Please don’t tear me apart
I got this leaf mantis a week or so ago and from the research I’ve done, I think his enclosure is set up okay?
I would like some advice on what I can do to better it though! I really want to give him the best and longest life I can!
I spray his enclosure once or twice a day depending how dry its looking (I haven’t yet today bc he’s on the ceiling right now but usually hangs from the tumble weed stick)
Leaving for a 9 day trip
Hi guys! Pretty new to the praying mantis world! I'm leaving for a 9 day trip and am worried about my mantis.
The cat sitter said she can spray his enclosure once a day! But she isn't comfortable feeding him live insects. Do you think he'll be okay if I give him a big feeding before leaving?
Just found this mantis, any help with identifying species and tips?
I found this mantis a few weeks ago in a garden bed I was deadheading, and it struck my interest in mantis to the point I’ve been preparing to start getting them as pets
Fast forward to today, I was in the same spot and saw him again but this time grabbed him.
Any idea what species it is? And what I can feed it until I get paid so I can buy food? (I planned on going shopping when I get paid which is in two days)
I also have a picture of when I saw him some time ago if it is the same one
(Ik im referring to it as he but I do not know his gender)
Help with ghost mantis baby
My L4(ish) ghost mantis baby is suddenly kind of sluggish and stays low on my finger. In the pic you can see his leg kind of dragging behind him. He’ll perk back up, but still seems sluggish. He’s my first mantis - what could this be?
Was this guy trying to fight me?
Hey mantis friends!
My wife and I moved into a new home last year to discover that it had a number of mantises! My wife was so happy as she loves mantises. She is bedbound and has been for a while now, so she never got to see the mantises up close last year (she could only see them through the pictures I took and showed her).
We ended up getting an enclosure so we could bring one in to her for a day. But,I didn't see any other mantises the rest of the year. The enclosure sat for a while gathering dust while I kept my eye out for another mantis the whole time. Well, yesterday I found this beautiful friend and was able to catch him (he did NOT make it easy) and get him in the enclosure!
My wife was so happy to get to hang out with this guy for a while! She couldn't see him long for her health, but she complimented him many times and thanked him for hanging out.
It came time to release him (at the same time I caught him the day before) and I ended up finding tons in our yard! It was very exciting. I let him out and he climbed up onto my hand and stared at me and started doing this kind of dance? I'd be lying if I said it didn't feel a bit intimidating. He then started crawling up very quickly towards my face (some of the photos I have attached) before I quickly moved him back down into the yard where I found him.
We ended up thanking him with a flower from our garden with the thought that it was both a lovely flower and also that it might attract some bugs for him. Hopefully I didn't interrupt him too bad, and he regards the experience as a positive one.
And thank you all for the tips on how to keep him comfy for the time he was staying with us! You all helped make my wife experience some joy and I am grateful for it.
So yeah, was the mantis trying to fight me?
Mantis living in my dads kitchen
This praying mantis has apparently been living in my dad’s kitchen since last fall, when he brought in his house plants that had been spending the summer outside and accidentally caused an egg sac that was on one of the plants to hatch in his house. He or she is very large, about 4” long, and looks a bit thin (its abdomen is very flat). I do help it catch extra bugs when I’m at his house so that it eats enough. We live in a city in zone 7 so it will get very cold over the winter.
My dad is originally from the Caribbean and he keeps his house ridiculously hot, and I fear that once those forced air heaters are on 24/7 keeping the house at 80 degrees all winter, the mantis is going to die because there will be fewer flies to eat and it will be very very dry in his house from the heaters always running.
Will the mantis be ok where it is over the winter, living near my dads window and fruit bowl and living off the bugs in his house, or should we put it in a humid tank and feed her bugs from the pet store like crickets over the winter? It’s amazing that he or she has lived in his house for so long and it would be a shame to let her die now.
Question about Type
Hi guys!! This is like my first ever post on reddit😭
I was curious if anyone is familiar with this type of mantis and whether her coloring is rare or not? I know she is a female, I was able to properly sex her off of her abdomen segments. I found her outside on my porch in Southern California. She was malnourished and hadn't left my porch for several days, so I took her in. Does anyone know what kind of mantis she may be, and if her coloring is abnormal?
Is a too big Enclosure bad??
So I'm planning on buying a L2 3 Giant indian Mantis got a nice Deli Cup planned with a mesh lid and cross ventilation. But as a Main Enclosure I have a 33x43x35 Diy Box planned with 35 cm being the height. I researched and saw that the mantis would only be able to live in the Cup up until l5. So I thought I would be able to move it to the big box but I guess according to some people it's not good for the mantis, what do y'all think, would the box be appropriate for when he outgrows the Cup.
Why?
Why my male of Mantis religiosa don’t want to mate with my female?
Thoughts?
Just finished setting this up, if you think I should make any changes let me know.
