How to Deal with Custom Cyborgs in Metal Gear Rising

How to Deal with Custom Cyborgs in Metal Gear Rising

Custom Cyborgs are among the toughest enemies in all of Metal Gear Rising thanks to their extreme resilience, aggression, and chasing speed (unsurprising for enemies that are actually taller than Sundowner if you line up all the character models). Very specific tactics often have to be deployed against them in order to mitigate the threat they pose on the battlefield in groups—whether in variety or the lack thereof.

While it is very satisfying to engage and win in a Parry war with these towering menaces (especially when there is only one of them left on the field), it is often not advised to engage in such Parry wars when you’re trying your best to survive hordes of enemies as well as be efficient. Alongside the Heavily Armed Cyborgs, these guys provide a relatively strong counter to your Parry mechanic when compared to many other enemies. As such, there are better methods by which to hold your ground against these enemies, who unfortunately appear in abundance.

AS RAIDEN: Raiden has a few moves that he can use to exploit the weaknesses of the Custom Cyborg, with some being better than others. While other moves and tools can also be quite useful, none counter the Custom Cyborgs as strongly as the Sliding Tackle–Blade Mode synergy, the Ankle Slicer, and the Throat Slicer.

  • By far the best method against the Custom Cyborgs is the Sliding Tackle–Blade Mode synergy. In order to utilize this, perform a Sliding Tackle against a Custom Cyborg. He will respond by putting on a parrying stance. Then, enable Blade Mode and cut at his parrying stance a couple of times. This will stun him, leaving him open for an Execution, but only if you have enough FC meter. If you do not have enough FC meter, use the Tornado Slash to quickly gain FC meter back and Execute the Custom Cyborg.
  • If you find that your current situation makes it difficult to farm FC meter with a follow-up Tornado Slash, the Custom Cyborgs are also extremely weak against the Ankle Slicer. Because the Sky High, Sweep Kick, and Thunder Strike unfortunately get easily negated by the Custom Cyborgs, the next best option is to use the Ankle Slicer—which they can almost never block—to trip them. After tripping them, you can either put them through an Ankle Slicer torture loop or use the Throat Slicer, explained below.
  • The Throat Slicer is a very powerful combo that can be used against Custom Cyborgs that have been tripped or launched horizontally or vertically. To reduce the cooldown of the combo’s finisher, aim the Defensive Offense forward and repeat the Throat Slicer so long as it is safe to do so.
  • Many players also find that some of the Unique Weapons are also very handy for dealing with the Custom Cyborgs. The L’Étranger Pole-Arm, in particular, is good for handling them in crowds. The Bloodlust Pincer Blades, on the other hand, can be charged ahead of time to shut down Custom Cyborg aggression.

AS SAM: Jetstream Sam is arguably a harder counter to the Custom Cyborgs than Raiden is due to the fact that many of his major attacks don’t get negated nearly as easily as Raiden’s. These attacks in question include the Assault Rush, the Jaw Breaker, and his various Charging Slashes.

  • The Assault Rush is by far the most convenient way to shut them down when they’re rushing at you since they cannot block this attack. It also does insane amounts of damage if you’ve Taunted them, but be careful about Taunting them when it is unsafe to do so.
  • While it is possible for them to block the Jaw Breaker, they seriously struggle to do so. The Jaw Breaker also does more total damage than the Assault Rush with its two outputs. The Jaw Breaker can also be used to style on them by starting your air combo. However, be careful about ending the air combo with an Avalanche, as there is a very high chance that the Custom Cyborg will instantly rise from the floor to perform a riposte against the Avalanche, even if you’ve cut off their limbs and disarmed them. This is a very annoying bug.
  • Only truly useful when there is only one Custom Cyborg advancing towards you, and you’re not already running from them, Sam’s Charging Slashes are a convenient way to instantly kill them. There may be cases where there are two Custom Cyborgs chasing you down, and the Blender would be the best move to use.

u/N0_Horny said the following, recommending a solution to the Parry wars that you may engage in with the Custom Cyborgs: “By the way, if you do get caught in the ‘endless parry exchange’ and want to get out of it—or if you sense someone approaching you from behind—you can do so by canceling the animation with Blade Mode and immediately using Defensive Offense afterward (you'll have about 0.3–0.5 seconds). It's advisable to do two of these, as someone could very well approach you from behind. A second dodge, just in case, will most likely get you back from this potential threat.”

How do you parry in this game?

I'm fighting the wolf rn, whenever I use a light attack during the red flash it doesn't parry, but it happens later sometimes but at seemingly random times? Also why can I sometimes parry during my combo and sometimes not?

I figured out how to cheese the first Raptor encounter in R-02.

I'll have to discuss this with some other people, but I seem to have figured out a strategy on how to kill the first three Raptors. Mind you, I had to record this multiple times in different trials, so it's not the easiest thing in the world.

Edit: In hindsight, it's not the biggest cheese in the world, but it's a winning strategy for those who aren't seeking to do anything crazy and for those who are trying to get through the game while rejecting the boons of New Game+, an often torturous endeavor for the uninitiated.

Raiden character's arc is actually good

After the events of mgs4 Raiden lives a peaceful live (somehow) with Rose and his child and far away from his "jack the ripper" persona. However as it is stated in the game (in a codec call IIRC), the maintenance of his body is expensive and he has to return to a life closer to the violence he moved away from (I mean working for Maverick).

After some events in the game he is faced with the reality that the people he kills seldom become cyborgs of their own volition and are also vulnerable people. He is faced with the fact that in his own quest for doing good (i.e. helping children being experimented on) his enemies might have had as little of a chance as the people he's trying to save.

Monsoon tell's to his face that he's being a hypocrite to declare he's helping the weak when he also kills weak people that didn't hve a choice. Then the most important part to me happens and it is Raiden accepting he is being a hypocrite and that he needed to do so (to say he fights for justice despite killing also weak people) in order to keep jack the ripper in check and not let him take over (to avoid that bloodthirsty version of him to dictate his life) but then he taps into it for a bit in order to come out alive of the situation and continue. after that, he tells Courtney that he is sorry she had to witness that and that he has to keep going so that other innocent people do not live through something simmilar as to what he lived.

In doing so he implicitly accepts that even if that people didn't have a choice, they are part of the group of terrorists that brainwash and experiment children into deadly weapons and cyborgs and that their deaths are not as unjustifiable as he thinks.

Now, when fighting Armstrong he declares that he wants a world where each individual can choose their live and not be manipulated by media, corporations, governments, etc. But he won't do it in a darwinian (survival of the fittest) way as Armstrong wants. Therefore he sets out to most surely aid other people in need or children so they don't have to live through the same he went through. In doing so he is effectively putting the lives of these weak people above the life of the weak people that is willing to hurt other people even if it's for their life (i.e. desperado enforcement troopers) or to earn a living.

This actually didn't feel that bad as other people make out to be; coming to terms with your childhood trauma and taping into it from time to time to get the best out of you and help innocent people (other thing would be whether he just wants to go in a killing spree and searches justifiable targets to do so, which I don't think is like that tbh because he has shown being capable of suppressing that part of himself for years and after the monsoon thingy he comes back to his normal senses mostly and even apologizes to Courtney) seems also a very reasonable line of thought just as trying to live a normal family guy live (it is also not clear whether he abandons completely his child and Rose after the events of the game or whether he goes in missions from time to time).

Sorry for the yapping and thanks for reading, I just wanted to pour here my thoughts after playing the game.

What are your thoughts about this?

Camera is super hard to control?

I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong, I'm on PC, but I can barely control my camera. I can't look anywhere, I feel like the game forces me to look somewhere I don't want to, and it's super awkward to move. I'm on the tutorial metal gear boss. If someones going to say skill issue, then please give some advice for the camera along with it.

Does anyone know which version of “the only thing I know for real” is the actual one?

I’ve tried to find it, but theres like 12 versions, and they either sound like a 9 year old got to the sound editing, or some techno addicted guy tried to make a ”better” version

Witch the HELL are Liquid and this psychic talking about?🤔

They say a picture says a thousand words, but what the HELL is this psychic witch Fortune talking about? What are her words really saying? Don’t forget she talks to her dead father! MGS2 may have shown us that there is such a thing as witch. A psychic one at that.

Looking at the MGS1 pics we know what HELL Liquid wants to send Gray Fox back to. We know Gray Fox is a prisoner of death. He’s an undying shadow in a world of lights. A ghost looking for a place to die.

Could Liquid and Fortune possibly be talking about the same HELL? Not child soldier hell, but the “fires of hell” as in Hades.🤔

Don’t put it past her, she does find these immortals to be interesting? These undying men!!!😱

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - Premium Package

Hello everyone, just want to share this Metal Gear Rising Premium Package that I found on the marketplace.

So recently, I was scrolling down on the marketplace and found this piece at an auction. I was shocked to see that the highest bid was about 20$ (Converted from PHP). I waited around till the auction ended and managed to get this for about $50, which I think was a very good price, assuming the seller said everything inside had only been opened once and was in very good condition. I also asked the seller how and when he acquired this, and he said that he bought it from Japan years ago and currently needs funds, which is why he decided to sell it. Received the package today, and I was shocked to see it's in very good shape! This game was released 12 years ago, and I cannot believe that everything, including the steelbook case, was in pristine condition.

The package includes an outer box and an inner box with Raiden artwork, Yoji Shinkawa Art Book of MGR:R, a Steelbook case with the original game soundtrack inside, a copy of MGR:R (PS3), and lastly two pieces of dwarf gekko figures.

Overall, I’m very happy about this find. The only thing bad I can say about this package is that the original game soundtrack does not include some of the awesome tracks (Rules of Nature, The Only Thing I Know For Real, etc.)

Sorry for my terrible English lol.
