Great Day at Gates

What a great day this past Saturday signing copies of my fly-fishing/folk horror novels The Dance of Rotten Sticks and my Pigeon River Forest-based sequel, Blood of the Witness Tree. The Michigan fly-fishing community is lucky to have Gates Au Sable Lodge and Josh Greenberg, especially if one is a writer!

Didn‘t catch any fish per se, but with 29 books sold, I was a fisher of men (and women!)

Anyone chasing carp in west mi?

Made it my goal to get a carp on the fly this summer. Have a couple spots I've been doing recon on. Would love to pick someones brain about tips and things they wish they knew when they started.

Thanks in advance.

Jordan or Boardman?

Taking my young son out camping and fishing this weekend. He is 12, and can cast well enough. Wondering if any of you have advice on which river/areas have better wading access, and we’d love to find our way to some willing brookies just to give him the experience.

Any favorite primitive campgrounds/public access spots? Not looking for your honey hole, just some place to let him practice casting dries and maybe get a few hits. Thanks in advance.

Michigan small stream rod

I fish a creek in Michigan that is 6-15 feet across, ankle to 4 ft deep, brush choked and over hung with an average of 4-6 feet clearance overhead and steep sides is some locations. Fishing for Brown and Rainbows in the 6-16 inch range with the possibility of hooking into a Great Lakes steelhead. Fishing dries, droppers and small buggers. I am 6’4” and my 9 foot and 8’6” rods are such a pain in the ass in this situation. Can’t backcast and often can hold the rod high enough to get a good roll cast. I’m sick of losing flies and getting snagged. Looking to get a shorter rod. Tried out my friends 6’6” Maxxon Quill 5wt and liked it for the short time I handled it. Also thinking about a 6’6” 4wt or 7’0” 5wt CGR. Any opinions, feedback or other recommendations would be appreciated. Looking to not spend more than $200, without knowing if I am really going to like it over time or not. Thank you in advance.

Floating Mio

Hey dudes
Floating Mio to McKinley in a flycraft next month with 3 guys. Rough estimate of time I’m thinking with anchoring and fishing. I’m guessing 8-10 hours? Am I on the right track?
Trying to move some big browns with streamers.

Edit:
These browns are fussy. Floated this stretch last week and moved one on a streamer in the rain. Rainbow colors to imitate those stockers have been my go to. As well as D&Ds because of the great action.
Fishing anything that looks deep and cover for the browns. Any input appreciated. Tight lines.
