Lost in the sauce

Melbert enjoying her fruit cup snack and wearing it as a hat. Apologies for the disgusting looking glass

Hmmmm

the first image has a millipede right? Wrong. It's hollow, the second image is cursed, right Yeah it is BUT it (might) be a millipede without a shell. I think it is because when a millipede is ready to molt,it makes space within its tight shell,an ant bit it off and now, feast your eyes on eldritch horror.

To myriapod lovers, don't let your lack of pokemon knowledge make your favorites pikachu: here are two

The first pic is scolipede the megapede pokemon,8ft in height,200 kgs weight, aggressive behavior and deadly poison, this bug-poison type hits hard, fast and can take a physical hit,the additional benefit of becoming stronger when it mega evolves to a vaporwave knight with glowing venom (2nd pic)

The 3rd pick is for charizard fans who want to move on,centiskorch: 9ft tall,120 kgs,1500°c body temp, this imposing centipede isn't just on fire,it is 🔥🔥. With its 100 base hp and 115 atk,bug moves are hitting like a truck to any dark grass pokemon. In sword and shield,go the additional step and make it 75 m long and incinerate foes with heat waves hotter than in Europe.

So tell me,whom do you pick? (I better not hear pikachu again)

just picked up an ivory and a scarlet!

set them up in a 10 gallon, gonna go out and source some wood and maybe some moss later!

tank contains: organic top soil and coco fiber mix, oak leaves, sphagnum moss, and some live moss from amazon, cork bark, a wood log hide, piece of cuttle bone, and a piece of mopani wood i stole from my giant african’s tank bc there were some springtails on it >:).

jelly cup just to see if they’ll bother with it.

there’s about 4 inches of substrate, it does not look it from the angle of that picture though lol, might honestly go ahead and add more tho! and i need to get some more coverage like plants or something !

(posted on wrong account so i deleted and reposted sorry lol)

worry abt collecting rotten wood/leaves ?

Ive been preparing nd researching more abt millipedes for a while now ((+ will keep on doing that for as long as I have absolutely no questions anymore before finally adopting millipedes))
but since Im a snail parent I am a big overthinker when it comes to parasites,, worms etc,, so how do u deal w that risk when collecting rotting wood or leaves? is checking it + knowing there are no chemicals really enough?

is a hole in the inside of wood a no-no or is that jst a normal part of rotting?
what r some signs that anything is infected w the wrong types of creatures?
should the leaves be washed or does that remove their meal on the rot?

I also have the option to buy dried leaves from a snail website nd then jst let them rot slowly in the millipede terrarium or buy millipedes leaf litter or wood from an insect website since I think those would be more controlled on what creatures can rot the leaves or wood

do u collect it wild or buy it online?
how big is the difference between wild collected // online bought? will any unnoticed hitchhikers on rotten collections infest the terrarium?
I wish to keep it as healthy as possible to reduce the chance of illness but Im not sure if that should be right since they literally eat rot yk aahm

advice for soon-to-be owner

Hihiii!! I am going to my state’s reptile expo in November and I am doing my research in the meantime. I tried reaching out to a supposedly reputable breeder for questions , as I am interested in an American Giant, and most of my questions were dismissed. Overall whoever emailed me back was quite dismissive and neglected to answer or acknowledge the greater portion of my questions, my original email reads as follows:
Hello! I am reaching out as a soon-to-be first-time millipede owner with some questions on care. I will be researching more thoroughly once I decide on a species. I have been flirting with the idea of getting an American Giant, but I am unsure if this species is suitable for first-timers. I am currently the proud father of a regal jumping spider, so I do have some experience caring for invertebrates, although it is obviously very different.
I suppose my first question is, what are the best species for someone who has recently discovered their love for these little guys?
What are some good, reliable resources for individual species? Also, how long do American Giants typically live? I haven’t been able to find a solid answer anywhere I have looked.
I do know some basics, such as what type of substrates I should use, and that I should be using a depth of substrate that is equal to, if not greater than, the length of the millipede. I have been wondering if it would be beneficial or harmful to house my millipede with isopods. I know this may vary in species, size, etc, but should I be getting a front-opening or top-opening enclosure? Also, should it be glass or acrylic? Do these fellas need any kind of warming or uv light? ( I know they are nocturnal, but I thought it better to ask). What are the best calcium supplements to put in my substrate?
I have many more questions that will likely be answered as I decide on a species and do more research.
Thank you so much!!

— if anyone could give me recommendations for enclosure and substrate (I can’t collect my own as I live in a high pesticide usage area) I would greatly appreciate it!

millipede not molting

hiii!! i got a giant african millipede about half a year ago :) one thing i noticed, she often buries and does not come out for a while but i have not noticed her molting. we do not bother her when she's not out. she seems to be doing well and has been very active recently. i have been mixing cuttlebone into her substrate and sprinkled it on her food recently because im getting worried. when deep cleaning her enclosure i also could not find traces of her molt either.

i do not know how old she is and if she molted recently before we got her, since we got her at a reptile show with many pedes in the tub so the seller did not know :/

Balustreptus falcatus "Giant Red Leg Tree Millipedes"

As of right now this is my favorite species of my collection. These are not only gorgeous but gigantic. They're way bigger than any African giant Milpitas ever owned. This one in the pictures almost 13 inches long. I really can't wait to have babies from them.

Who is this adorable imposter?

Just discovered this lil guy stompin around in my Gundlachi terrarium while the gang is hard at work getting their beauty sleep. I’ve only put springtails and four spotted white tree millipedes in there, so seeing this friend scootin’ around on the surface is a pleasant surprise.

ISO of Desmoxytes Purpurosea

Hi everyone! 👋

I’ve been searching everywhere for Desmoxytes purpurosea, commonly known as the Shocking Pink Dragon Millipede, and haven’t had any luck finding one available.

I’m located in New York, USA and I’m looking for:

  • Juveniles
  • Adults
  • A breeding pair
  • Or even a reputable breeder who expects to have them available in the future.

I’m an experienced invert keeper, and this has become my dream species. They would be going to a permanent, well-prepared home.

If you know of a breeder, importer, private keeper, or someone willing to sell or even point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it!

Thank you so much! 🩷

What can I do?

My millipedes surfaced today after about 2-3 weeks, and this one just looks like this, legs are randomly twitching slowly, it is reacting to light stimulus, but won’t really right itself, and just remains or returns to this position. The other one is acting totally normal.

Anything I can do to help them? I acquired them from a friend so I don’t know much about them. These are my first and I’ve just fallen in love! I’ve had them about 2 months and they’ve been acting ‘normal’ as far as I can tell/ have learned.

Thanks in advance 🥺

Stopped in the pet store for some flightless fruit flies and came out with my first millipede

Her name is Millie Bobby Brown

u/PrincessKelsey24601 — 1 day ago

Is this safe?

I’ve seen some people mention it before and I was very worried that the day would come that my ‘pedes would also figure out how to get up on the lid, but I was praying it wouldn’t happen. I only have a 10 gallon and there’s only 6 inches from the top of the tank to the top of the soil but I’m still so worried she will fall and hurt herself😭

There’s only 2 areas where it’s tall enough for them to get up but they are their favorite spots to hang out so i don’t want to have to move them :(

I had to move her myself back into the tank because she was just walking away from where the 2 high areas were and I didn’t know how long she had already been up there.

Question about using flake soil

Hello! I am researching and preparing a terrarium for four young Spiropoeus Fischeri, I have never kept millipedes before and I'm very excited!

I have a question about using flake soil.

Would using only flake soil as the base for the substrate, with the other ingredients being leaf litter, rot white wood and cut up sphagnum moss, be a good and complete substrate? Would it be good enough structure wise for them to safely burrow in?

I have read some contradicting things so I would love to get some advise! Thanks in advance!

Types of millipede

What kinds of millipede are there? I know there's tons but as far as I know there's only two visual shapes, the ones that look like centipedes with the sharp sprawled out legs, and the ones that look like long roly polys with their legs pointed more downwards and inside. I know the shape isn't the only difference given there's tons of kinds within both of those shapes but with different lengths and sizes and colors and stuff, but is there a basic separation between the two+ shapes or anything? I would Google it but its kinda hard to word that in a short search lol
