Millie's butt is open

Hi! I have this little gam (around 8 cm long), it's a girl. I just checked on her and she was on her usual eating spot, holding on her poop near the head while her butt is wide open pointing down... This freaked me a bit out, because it was open like that for a little while, and only after I took some pictures it finally closed. At first I couldn't under what that was, but that is indeed her butt. There was no poop near it (the poop on the pictures is all from yesterday) so I can't tell if she was just pooping or not. She's definitely alive and doesn't show any other signs of being unwell. I'm wondering, is it normal?

Is the “pede in a pod” okay to get as a starter?

EDIT 2: They are dead… I checked during my break 🙁

EDIT: Im not sure if it was clear but I was planning on getting a large tank for one if I got one…

Just curious! I would be getting whatever size tank required if I got this fella. I’m on break at work right now so I snatched a pic of the cup to show you guys. Thanks in advance!

need enclosure advice for arboreal giant pedes

i currently have 40x20x25 for 3 pedes and yeah its just not big enough ive always wanted a new one but the best i can find are these glass ones with like no ventilation. but i bought one anyway cause space is important and i can do things to help ventilation

so i have these asian arboreal millipedes of varying size(the middle is photoshopped in in case it looks too seamless :P) and i am in asia, in a subtropical area, so at least ambient humidity is quite high and have not been an issue so far

first issue is the front door, so i got a piece of glass 35cm tall and imma attach it to the front to hold in the approx 30cm substrate

but imma get a fan automated to periodically pull air out(planned 10 seconds every 4 hours but ill check how it works first)

and i hope to one day replace the glass fromt door with a custom mesh one? but i dont think itll be easy so ill see how the fan works.

for substrate im doing humus soil mixed with crushed rotwood and leaf litter, with the top 10cm having more leaf litter and some calcium powder.

im gonna put a tube down to the bottom cause i think its important to have a way to do that, and for my humus soil it doesnt get muddy. i do mist personally daily so ill see how it does before getting a automated mister or idk.

as for the top vertical space i have no plans yet cause i wanna get the base set and done first, its heavy as hell so i wanna be careful

so iwanna ask people with experience and knowledge for some advice and comments!!!

Accidentally bought wild caught

Last weekend I went to an expo and got 3 millipedes (1 African giant and 2 female chocolate millipedes - Ophistreptus guineensis) after researching their needs and care guides. I saw a few posts mentioning wild caught pedes but I didn’t do more research into this issue (like the specific size of CB vs WC, breeding difficulty which effects what species are more likely WC, etc.), as I was also naive that the possibility of it happening within EU is low (yes, stupid). After getting them I came across more posts here that were more specific about this and I feel horrible. They all are pretty big (around the 18-20 cm), 100% not juveniles. I am against getting wild caught/imported pets as I am also a vet student, so I feel horrible and stupid for not doing better research about the vendors and asking the right questions. I thought I did proper research about them - mainly care (they have 104 liter tank, length around 75 cm, width around 30 cm, over 23 cm layer of substrate from leaf matter, decaying wood, moss and humus, hiding spots, etc.), but this is the one information I didn’t research properly. I contacted the vendor on Instagram to be sure, but they still haven’t answered (and it is possible that they won’t). But deep down I know they are WC.

So I guess this is mostly a rant about how stupid I feel and also a warning for people who are thinking about keeping them. Think about from who you are buying them, the millipedes can be WC and most of the times they are!

As for the ones I got, I will try to give them the best life possible and hope, that they won’t die after few weeks. And I will also educate people around me, if they ever decide to get millipedes to check their seller and their origin as I will in the future if I decide to get more of them.

Is this safe?

I put this thermos of hot water inside of my tank with the lid on, and was wondering if it’s safe to be in there? My room gets pretty cold, and was thinking this was a possible way to keep the tank warm and humid. It’s in there just fine and my millipede is hiding on the opposite side of the tank. Thoughts?

Hello everyone, is it like that everywhere or is it just poland, i hoped to perhaps get some classic garden millipedes for an iso enclosure, the ones you can find in a garden, but not a single damn soul is selling any

I can't use a cute chihuahua sized one as it requires more careful care, and would loose random appendages every moult next to iso, i need less cute pet, and more bug, the container is very big and has deep substrate, so small ones won't become protein suplement, does anyone know any catch phrases i could use to ease my search? you know- how when looking for bloodworms sometimes you need to look next to wands rather than pet supplies

i'm not really confident if i should collect them from the outside as i'd rather not create an expensive, heavy metal laced, mite farm

any i will specify, im talking about Polish garden tiny ones, not Brazilian garden tiny ones

and yes, i am aware that "the small garden ones" are not a single species

Beginner Questions

Hey all,

New pede beginner with some questions. I'm taking this slow, no pede purchases yet, I don't want to rush and make mistakes. I'm on step 1 and I just bought a terrarium. It's a used 50 gallon that my friend had stored away for years post lizard.

Questions-

  • How do I safely clean the terrarium before I start adding anything? (no lizard traces + safe for pedes) Is vinegar and a good scrub sufficient?
  • How much pede real estate do I get with 50 gallons? Could I fit two adults of a giant species like a Ghost Rider or GA?
  • What are the rules for putting different species together? I'd like to get Pink Dragons, Bumblebees, and/or Tanzanian Earthworm pedes. Will they fight/ if I add a giant species will the little guys get trampled?
  • My 50 gallon will need A LOT of substrate. Any tips on getting it cheap or foraging it safely? I'll be fine ordering additives like leaves/rotting wood online, but I'm concerned with buying/shipping 100 pounds of dirt :(
  • Lastly, any advice y'all have from big mistakes you made in the past as rookies please lmk! Also please give any safe budgeting tips y'all know of. This 50 gallon is both a blessing and a curse (Broke college student tryna pede it up over here)

Thanks for any advice!!!,

-Pede Beginner

Laying on her back

Why would she do that? She started doing that a few days ago.

Ive turned my millipedes into blood thirsty beasts

Genuinely Its gotten to a point where when i hold them they start biting my skin and trying to eat me to the point its left marks and it HURTS. My god i didnt realize that i could turn my millies so evil.

All ive done is feed them flakes of my dry and dead skin so they can get some nutrience, and now they are blood thirsty beasts

skin above is provided by my sunburn flaking off

Thinking of getting a Goliath Yellow Leg Tree Millipede

I can't find any guides specific to this species, so would their care just be the same as A. gigas? Also if anyone knows where I can get them relatively cheep then that'd be nice, I'm still on a hunt for them

Supplemental feeding?

Do you guys feed your millipedes anything? Or do you just let them munch on what is within their enclosure (dead wood, leaves, soil etc.)?

I recently got my sweet angel Millie Bobbie Brown (yes it’s a pun, when I get a centipede I plan to name it Frank CENTatra) after collecting her on a hike, she is currently in a 5 gallon vessel with plenty of wood, moss, plants, leaves. But she is truly the largest bug I have/ever have had aside from an ex of mine who loved tarantulas. Im waiting on a 20 gallon tank from a friend and would love to go back out to where I found Millie and collect more, as the space I was in I saw many of her as well as many, so so many of the Cherry millipedes.
I’ve raised a colony of garden millipedes, the little ones not sure on their ID, and have them in all of my terrariums with my isopods. Which in the past year I’ve gotten insanely into and my house is becoming a bug hotel (which is GREAT as me and my partner love entomology in varying aspects). I have dairy cows, cappuccinos and what I believe to be A. Vulgare. My dairy cows love protein, so I have a mix of “turtle blend” I feed them, which contains shrimp, crickets, meal worms, roaches and some other dried insects/crustaceans. While my cappuccinos receive extra calcium. I also have a feed I got from a breeder friend which contains pea powder, nutritional yeast, and calcium, which is blended into a fine powder. Occasionally I’ll throw in veggies for them but I don’t like to do this as I forget about it for a few days and when I remember I’m always anxious I’ll open my enclosures to a mold boom. And they don’t eat it as quickly as the other things. I feed all of my isopods these things a few times a week, especially because I do want large populations as a I do terrarium classes as well as build MANY for my own interests.

So from my understanding with my isopods I do not need to supplemental feed (aside from my cappuccinos which need and appreciate additional calcium) but doing this encourages colony booms.

So do I need to/should I feed my millipede anything additional? Would any of the things I have work? I would love any other tips as well regarding these guys so I can make sure my lady is happy and feel confident in seeking out more!

Edit: I checked her segments for the millionth time and although I was certain Millie was a lady….she is a man.

Intrested in owning millepedes

hello everyone! i am an italian university student majoring in zoology, with a specific interest in arthropods. i've only ever kept insects, specifically beetles. i've always wanted to own giant millipedes, as i find them incredibly adorable, and i would like having an arthropod that has a longer lifespan (i've only ever kept cetonids, which as you probably know have very long larvae and pupation stages, so you never really get to "enjoy them" and their company). i want to be as prepared as possible, as i wouldn't take responsibility of owning animal that i didn't know everything about (in terms of caring for them).

so, please, inform me on anything you can! for example, what specie should i look into? any care tips? thank you so much guys!

EDIT: also, any information about soil, feeding etc etc...

Is this too much mold and fungus?

There are probably hundreds of thousands of springtails and isopods in here with my one GAM, theres always been spots of mold and fungus in the tank, there’s been quite a bit more mold/fungus growing in here recently just need to know if it’ll do any harm to any of these creatures or if I should remove any of it
