64 year old engine rebuild, update 1
Got a crankshaft pressed together and trued. Could not use the original one as the bigend pen was 14.4mm instead of the 14mm connecting rod kit i bought.
The new bearing races are pressed in the engine casing and made true to the mating surface using a brass dowel and hammer and some percussive persuation
Mating surfaces are cleaned up and transfers are matched to the new cilinder.
Next step is getting some fresh case bolts, assemble engine with just the crankshaft mounted, measure play in bearings, take the thing apart again and add necessary shims.
I need help with points
i have this old Riga d8 engine, i tried to adjust the points but its nearly impossible, they open 2 times with ~.36mm gap, tried replacing the point trigger thing on top of the rotor, same problem again. also what are the correct values for it?
Modding an AV7 in Canada isn’t easy. Can I adapt a BWS Yasuni Banana muffler on this Motobecane?
If so, wich one I get? The 50cc or 70cc one? Actually I’m running full stock av7 but I will probably upgrade to 70cc. Can I adapt a Yasuni muffler of Yamaha BWS ? Performance wise is ok good/ok?
More fun moped engine questions and concerns
Finally getting around to tearing this ZA50 engine apart. Would love somebody to help me with a couple of questions..
- When pulling this apart it looks like there is some form of jb weld. Any ideas as to why this is there? Obviously a shot in the dark but figured it would be worth asking
- While disassembling the head the mounts came off. When I go to reattach them should I loctite them?
- What’s up with the look of the piston? Thoughts?
Overall I’m teaching myself as I go.

Puch E50 crank seal orientation
Hey I’m seeing conflicting specs for rebuilding the Puch bottom end. This doc says to have the seals pointed one way, but in the German company puch shop’s video on rebuilding one of these they have the seals the opposite:
https://vintagemopeds.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/puch-e50-assembly.pdf
(on Clutch side, open part of seal is facing bearing here)
in this video from PuchShop they very explicitly say to put the open side towards the crank around 8:20.

Anyone have a definitive answer on this?
Tomos Targa Carb question
I recently started to get my new to me moped ( 98 tomos targa ) running finally. I ordered a carb rebuild kit and used all the pieces and I fired right up ,unlike before when it would only run with the choke on and throttle 3/4 way open. Unfortunately as excited as I was for this I noticed fuel spilling out of the carb from all over , like it was flooding . Realized that the new needle valve was only half the length as the old one . So I decided to just put the old back in expecting it to be good and now it’s like it’s not getting fuel again like before. Do needle valves go bad ? I think I’m going to order a new one specifically for that carb .
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks
QT50/pw50 pinion gear swap - what's the right tool?
I'd like to keep this a one day project. For anyone who's done it what tool did you use? The 1 1/2 inch Hex wrench converts to 38mm and i believe the hex nut takes a 36mm which i cannot find.
Did this tool do the job or did you use something else? The OEM wrench and the reproductions are a little more expensive than I'd like to pay for a one-time use tool.
I'm aware of needing to press the ring gear onto the QT50 axle as the PW50 axle is too long. Thanks
Where to i get this part for my moped its in the variator cover
Tomos apn4 1980.
It fired from the first crank after months of sitting in barn. Made in Yugoslavia
Can’t get bearing on crank all the way. Puch e50
At my wit’s end with this bearing. I’ve tried getting it on there 4 times now. Froze the crank for a day, put the bearing in a toaster oven at 250 for 20 minutes. Every time it gets stuck before sitting flush. at this point I’ve probably hurt the bearing and/or crank with putting it on and taking it off over and over.
Any advice would be awesome. I do know someone with a hydraulic press, could that be an option? Any other home remedies for this before I go that route? For whatever reason the heat and cold trick is not happening for me.
Moped VLX Question
I have a VLX with the standard blunderbuss exhaust installed on it and not the stock one (pictured). Will this affect the performance of the bike or is it just a stylistic choice?
How to remove chain from Tomos Bullet A3
Does anyone know or have any tips to remove the chain so I can replace it?
How to repack muffler
Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do i repack the muffler for my biturbo exhaust?
2 stroke Tuning Advice
Hello everyone, i recently got my hands on my grandpas old trial, its a 1989 beta 50cc aircooled and i’m looking to get some more power off of it. I got zero experience with 2 strokes but i have quite a bit of basic knowledge and id say i’m mechanically inclined.
Today i tore the carb apart to clean it and checked the reed valves, everything seems pretty healthy.
Can i just slap a 17.5mm carb (currently 12mm) and see decent high rpm gains or will it just be worse overall? do i risk overheating? Thanks for the advice!
Should I get it
Hey guys this is on Facebook and I was wondering if it was a good deal, if not I can always ask for a lower price. I don’t know too much about mopeds and I’m looking for something to cruise around town with and possibly hold two people. 1972 Suzuki F50
Puch e50 swapped Batavus.
Got this Batavus from my father. Previous Batavus I own is fast, wanted to make this one fast too. Chose to e50 swap it. It's as if the engine was made to be on this frame. Had to move the front wheel forward by about 2 inches to make everything fit. Have a stock Magnum cylinder bored out to 39mm, ported and reed inducted.
