Tips for moving to Iceland in a few years

Hello,

I'm a 31yo man from Czechia (apparently there's around a thousand of us there), thinking about moving to Iceland. I've been working for almost 10 years as project manager in the localization industry (which is really struggling right now).

Moving to Iceland has been a dream of mine since my mid teens, that I eventually dropped... and now, in my never-ending pursuit of mental happiness, I'm looping back to it.

Now, it's not something I'd do right now. I'm in the very early stages of planning, of researching the reality of actually going. And I should definitely visit Iceland first, multiple times, at different times of the year, to see how close it is to my idealized vision. Fortunately, I have an advantage in this, because my current job allows me to work fully remotely, a fact that my other Czech colleagues have taken advantage of to spend time around the world. So I can actually stay for a month or more (as long as I can find housing) and work my current job (though it doesn't pay anywhere near enough to sustain long-term living in Iceland).

So, let's say I have up to five years of prep time for the move. I wonder what tips or advice would other immigrants, or native Icelanders give me to do in that time? What skills I should focus on getting, life or professional? I imagine starting to learn the language would be high on the list.

Thank you for reading, and any advice you'd like to share! Have a nice day :-)

Would my unique job experience give me an edge in moving to Iceland?

hæ!

im determined to move to move to Iceland and am exploring ways to make that happenen as an American.

The number one key I want to move to Iceland is because of the horses. I am very interested in becoming part of the horse culture there.

I have a background in barn/farm management, equestrian program directing, a little bit in training and writing, and just overall kind of jack all trade stuff with horses.

I also have extensive experience in leatherwork. I started out making tack at a company called Quillin’s and have done leather work for 10 years.

I also have hospitality experience. I’ve worked in restaurants. I’ve managed a hotel and right now I worked the front desk at a very famous hotel in Atlanta.

I have been told that the combination of my equestrian experience as well as my leather experience and hospitality might fill a niche that might give me an edge.

ideally, I would find Work within the equine industry that combines hospitality experience like a horse Wrangler trail guide or something like that. But I’m really not sure if this would actually help me at all.

My ex-boyfriend lived in Iceland for eight years. He started off on a student visa learning Icelandic. I have a lot of savings so I could do that and probably survive for a while, but I would obviously want to be able to start working in some capacity at some point, so I don’t burn throughout my savings.

I really to Iceland. It’s been my dream for so long and I would love some advice and a reasonable pathway forward in order to make this happen. Like I said, I have a lot of savings so I’m willing to invest in whatever skills or education I would need to give myself a fighting chance over the next two years.

bureaucracy chaos before moving to Iceland

Really would appreciate Your help in the following topic:

I want to move to Iceland in the beginning of 2028. I am a social worker and EU citizen.
In preparation and to not arrive without knowing if I can work in my profession (regulated in Iceland), I applied at the ministry of help for a licence to practice. Appart from requiring 1000 different documents that are hard to get in Germany (as the profession of social worker is not regulated here and not listed as a health care profession), now they want me to provide a kennitala. The þjóðskrá in return told me, I can only get a kennitala with a domestic residency and that a systeþ ID would be the only thing I could apply for in the beginning. The System ID can I get only whem I am lready in Iceland and i need to apply in person.
Anybody been through this process alredy?
Is it even possible to get the licence to parctice before I move, or do I really need to take the risk of moving, leaving everything behind and them getting rejected?

Thanks in advance for Your help!
