Observation: Seems like a lot of people are playing Competitive Brawl to escape the matchmaking algorithm.

I’ve been really surprised by the variety of decks in Competitive. It seems like the place to go if you want to play your favorite deck and not be eternally stuck in the old Hell Queue with your pile of jank.

Serious question, why isn’t Library banned in casual?

[[Library of Alexandria]] is known as the 10th piece of power for a reason. Having it on turn one (especially while being on the draw) almost guarantees that you’ll be drowning your opponent in card advantage the rest of the game if it’s not removed. I’m not sure if WOTC is monitoring this card or if they overlooked it being legal in Brawl when it came out in the SOS mystical archive.

If a control/tempo player (ie Nashi, Raffine, Rusko) is drawing with Library from t1, I usually just concede because I know the game is not going to go in my favor. This goes for competitive too, but I don’t think it should be banned in competitive because the swing-y nature of the card fits with other cards in the format (ie Mana Drain and Channel). Thoughts?

How to fight blue decks?

This is sort of weird. I am newish to mtg as a whole, and as far as I can see, blue is a very strong colour in general. I am not here to complain about why is it like that, but rather would like to learn how do you fight blue decks using non blue commanders. For example rn I am running a toph metalbender deck which is on built cheaply, but I am slowly upgrading. A lot of commanders I like omit Blue (Eddie Brock/Venom, All the Tophs, Tifa) and if I wanna step into competitive brawl, what is the mentality and habits I need to learn to fight blue based control strats and such? Especially if I cannot match it with Blue. I won't stick to these commanders, just giving examples.

Abilities that move commander from command zone

This really needs a rule revision. All that needs to happen is acknowledgement that abilities that move the commander from the command zone into play are subject to the commander tax. That is all that is required. If that were done it would do so much to balance these commanders.

Having trouble breaking through with Raffine

[[Raffine, Scheming Seer]] is my favorite commander to play with, and I know she’s supposed to be good, but I just have trouble breaking through with her. I’m mired in Plat4 with a winrate of 47% despite playing what I think “should” be a good deck.

My current decklist

The goal is to attack aggressively and land Raffine on curve, relying mostly on free interaction to allow me to be aggressive. I based this on an mtgdecks deck that purportedly had a 75% winrate, but hell if I can repeat his success. Most of my changes involved removing [[Oracle of the Alpha]] which I think is mostly a Timmy Trap; [[Land Tax]] which seemed underwhelming in a deck with so few basics; and the [[Grindstone]] / [[Thassa’s Oracle]] combos in place of other cards that I think would synergize with a tempo strategy.

If the answer is “you removed the combo pieces from a combo deck and that’s why you suck,” I’ve also tried the non-combo variants at the top of this list and I still suck.

What am I doing wrong? Countering the wrong things? Walking into counterspells? Hard so say. Any general advice on the recommended playstyle?

Frodo and Sam Partners Help

Frodo and Sam Partners in Abzan colors have been added to Arena and I am so excited to build them! I have built a shell that so far """works""". I can pretty easily get my engine going, attacking with Frodo, drawing some cards, but I can't seem to win fast enough or stop my opponents from just crushing me. I am unsure of exactly what to do, what to add, what to cut. etc. I will attache my current decklist and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Why is Ugin not banned?

Maybe, maybe, MAYBE you could make an argument for comp brawl

But playing against this thing in casual is just miserable and I don’t really feel like “oh just concede if you see it” really addresses the problem.

New matchmaker update? Much shorter queue times, odd opponents

It feels like they messed with the matchmaker again? My queue times are fast now - they were getting over a minute and now are down to 5-10 seconds - but I'm facing Commanders I've never seen before and decks filled with uncommons!

None of my commanders are top-tier and I never face the 'hell queue' commanders but apparently something has unlocked an entire lower matching tier and I feel a bit bad in a lot of the games. Anyone else having the same experience?

My Commander is a Removal Magnet

As the title says my commander [[Elsha, Threefold Master]] is a removal magnet. I’m a f2p player and recently was able finish this deck that I was so excited for. The few times she isn’t immediately removed things pop off very quickly. Most of the time though she’s immediately incapacitated and it really puts the breaks on things. Any ideas to overcome this? I have [[Swiftfoot Boots]] and things like [[Dive Down]] but I’m not sure if that’s enough. Any recommendations would be very helpful, thank you!
