How Much To Spend For a Musky Rod?

been thinking about going out and getting a dedicated muskie rod (heavy) and am in between a shimano sojourn and a fenwick muskie rod. Is there that much of a difference?

Unexpected.

Tough opener for me this year. I’ve caught a few Muskies walleye fishing but never walleyes Muskie fishing. Both 20” with eyes bigger than bellies wondering if anyone else has had an experience like this.

Monofilament leaders?

Do any of you make your own monofilament leaders? I would like to make some for my fishing trip to Canada later this summer. I would like to make some for the whole group. If you do make them can you link what items to use?

Muskie Partner for 43 years

My Muskie fishing partner of 43 years Ray passed away this week after a long battle which left him wheelchair bound. I’m sad that he’s gone, but I’m glad he isn’t in constant pain anymore. This photo was taken after we fished for 10 hours in the rain & sleet in late November for muskies. We caught 3 fish that day, nothing huge just typical Wisconsin Muskies, 36” 38” and 42” all released. The lake froze over that night. It was our last trip up North before he lost the use of his legs.
We use to fish quietly for hours, not saying anything just casting and enjoying nature around us in the beautiful Northwoods.
He was a great net man and between us we never lost a Muskie netting them. Not many people can make that claim.
Did we lose fish during the fight, oh yeah many lost that way. But our record boat-side was spotless.
Just left his place and his son just gave me all his Muskie gear and hats. Ray left me his fishing gear in his will to me.
I had to pull over I was crying in the car.
I’m at peace that my pal is not suffering, just sad we can’t drag suckers in snowstorms before ice-up anymore. Or bitch about our reels freezing up at 10 degrees outside.
Those were our vacations every fall chasing old mossback Muskie !
RIP Ray.

Caught and released this beauty while fishing for pike.

Muskie isn’t open in my neck of the woods (Quebec outside of Montreal) so I decided to use some smaller gear for the big pike that also swim here.

Got this Muskie when the bait it the water. I didn’t take her out of the net and had to use wire cutters to get the hook, fish and net untangled.

Very overcast and blustery day after a big storm went over. Air temps are about 18c. Water is a brown murky colour.

The second pic doesn’t do her justice. But from the first and third you can see the size of the lure to her mouth.

Blew my Tranx 401

Hi friends,

Yesterday, I did not a 2-, not a 5-, but a 10-mile float down the river.

Long story short, as I got to the end of my adventure, I blew my Tranx 401 AHG at prime muskie time.

How the fuck did I blow such a tank of a reel, you may ask?

My dumbass purchased an AHG instead of the HG… for kayak fishing. Yes, a large single handle instead of a balanced double handle.

Naturally, every 10 casts or so, the torque from the rod would force the handle forward, engaging the clutch whilst the spool was still spinning. This resulted in, you guessed it, metallic confetti. This happened even with me keeping the handle in the 6 o'clock position during casting and turning over my wrist to help with the torque load.

The reel will be shipped out to Shimano and hopefully (probably not) covered under warranty. Basically, I’m screwed for a month, as I will not target these creatures using my Vanford. I may be desperate, but I am not cruel.
So, for all who liked watching my dry streak posts, do not worry—I will be back once my reel is functional again. 😁

(going to have shimano swap the large handle for a double handle to prevent this from happening again)

Muskie pal

My Muskie partner for 37 years Ray Dehn from Howard, Wisconsin passed away yesterday in his sleep.
Together we fished all over North America for ski’s.
We fished the Northwoods & the U.P of Michigan hundreds of times. Canadian waters of Eagle Lake, Lake of the Woods, Thaddeus Lake, Ontario.
Flett Lake NW Territories, Alaska, the Yukon.
North of Sixty.
His ability to catch fish especially walleyes was a skill he learned from his father.
A good net man and friend.
My heart aches, but my friend is now released from the pain he fought for years, as his body simply wore out. He was 92 and fished Muskies till his legs didn’t work anymore a few years ago.
He always released his fish, keeping only a
few walleyes to make our fish fry.
Take care my friend, see you on the big pond someday !
RIP Ray your net man Mac.

Lake st. Clair lures?

In the last little bit of summer, I believe late June or early August, I’m going to be heading up to lake st. Clair in search of a musky. I’m likely going to be, for the most part, fishing from shore on only the Michigan side. What lures and lure colors should I use up there?
