What is a Dirty Cello? Find out at the Native Sons of the Golden West in Napa on May 1

The band Dirty Cello is a globe trotting band that performs blues, rock and Americana, all fronted by virtuoso cellist Rebecca Roudman. A classically trained symphony player, Roudman dropped the straight- jacket of classical music years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

“We travel all over the place,” says Roudman, “and everywhere we go, the idea is to put on a high energy show. We’re a rock band, but with a cello instead of a lead guitar.” The Dirty Cello band really does get around - with shows from Iceland, to Indonesia, to an underground cave in California. The show will be at the beautiful, but lesser known, Grand Hall of the Native Sons of the Golden West, right downtown on Coombs St. in Napa.

Among their many descriptions, Oakland Magazine describes the group as, "Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky, carnival, romantic, sexy, tangled, electric, fiercely rhythmic, and textured, and only occasionally classical." Roudman agrees with this description and adds, “We’re all about the fun at our shows and we step on stage with only a vague plan as to what specific songs we are going to play, and we react to what the audience wants to hear and adjust accordingly.”

With a set list ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Charlie Daniels to rocking original songs, the band can deliver on this promise.

Looking for some friends locally preferred

Hello fellow Napan's, I'm a 30s male looking to make some new friends both men and woman locally preferably but willing to drive if in surrounding areas. I have lived here my whole life but found it hard for me to make friends since I'm not regularly going out to drink and stuff and Napa is more an older population and lately I've been a bit down due to not working and not having much social structure locally.

I like Light hiking, going to the dog parks in Napa, playing video games and board games, riding my motorcycle around town.

I'm pretty shy at first but can open up to people fairly easy afterwards.

If you're interested in chatting with me feel free to send a message. Happy to hopefully connect with some of you.

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend.

Sign Shop Sign

This is such clever and funny marketing- does this make anyone else chuckle as you drive past on Trower? It’s been there for years and I don’t think anyone really bats an eye…

BottleRock as a Local

What are the chances of getting into bottlerock last minute? Im hoping for someone desperate enough to sell tickets at a discount, find a way to work the venue, or sell something outside the venue since I live nearby. Any one have any advice?

Privatization of the public tennis courts at Napa Valley College

There will be a meeting on May 21st. It begins at 4:30pm in the Napa Valley College Admin Bldg. If you want time to speak about concerns with the proposed NVTA mission, then you need to be there a little ahead of 4:30 to sign a card and hand it in before they go into closed mtg at 4:30. After that, no one can speak except those who were there early and signed a card. They don't ever publish how long the closed session will be, so we just wait until they open up for the public to join the mtg.

On Thursday, April 16th, the Napa Valley Tennis Association (NVTA) presented a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to the college's Board of Trustees to take over the college's courts. The District Facilities Committee is discussing this item today.

Historically, these courts have been a vital public asset, having lights and open every day, until 10:00 PM. The NVTA is claiming to the college board that this project will be in part funded by USTA Grants.

According to the official NVTA Presentation and Draft MOU submitted to the college, the NVTA’s terms include:

  • USTA Grant: Claiming the $300,000 project will be funded through "USTA grants and NVTA fundraising."
  • Public Lockout: Restricting guaranteed public access to just a single tennis court, handing the rest of the scheduling over to the NVTA and F.I.T.T. (a private, for-profit coaching business).
  • Utility Burden: Requiring the publicly funded college to pay for all utility costs (including court lights), allowing the NVTA to host private "night play" at the taxpayers' expense.
  • 90-Day Notice: Requiring the college to provide the NVTA with a 90-day notice to use its own facilities.

A few years ago, the NVTA executed a similar takeover of the courts at Vintage High School, severely restricting public access to just a few hours on Sunday afternoons. We are hoping the same thing won't happen to our community college courts.

The courts are still very usable and do need to be (properly) resurfaced at some point, but I don't think it's worth it to lose public access. There's been a lot of time, money and energy put into the courts from the college and locals.

Sidewalks randomly dissapear

sidewalks get randomly interrupted by people’s gardens, then more sidewalk, then someone’s fence…

How does this work? Shouldn’t the sidewalks be continuous?

I walk my dog around town a lot, and I have seen this in every neighborhood Ive lived in Napa, except for obviously downtown.

Strawberry matcha latte in Napa

Just gotta give a shout out to Cha Na for their strawberry matcha latte. Good matcha, and the strawberry puree is fresh and housemade. It tasted like a milkshake! Loved that there was no Torani or processed syrup in sight.

We got ours regular sweet (100%) and it was great, but next time will do 75% sweet. Also curious to try the hojicha strawberry latte.
