Top Dinner in or near NYC

My husband’s birthday is coming up in September. I want to plan something special. Last year we went to Frevo and we loved it!!! Highly recommend it.

I keep seeing Saga, Chef’s Table Brooklyn, Atera come up in threads, but the reviews for all those places are not great and the threads are over a year old. We did not like Eleven Madison’s veggie menu..

What are your most recent favorites? No Korean, but pretty open to anything else.. I’d love to stay in NYC, but will travel a couple hours if it’s an incredible dinner experience.

Recommendations for Quick dinner before Broadway on a Sunday

Any recommendations for a quick but yummy (and not necessarily a take out place) for a quick dinner in Times Square before a 6:30pm show on a Sunday? We have about 1 hr 15 min for dinner.

We live somewhere that feels fancy or at least makes my niece from Louisiana feel fancy before her first broadway. She’s 6.

Tipping Question

Hi NYers,

I’m vision New York (and America) for the first time and have a question about tipping at restaurants etc.

In London where I live usually our bills include a service charge of anywhere from 10-15% of the total bill. It is my understanding that this is effectively how we tip.

My question is will my bills in NYC have a service charge % added to them and if so is this enough to tip? Or would I pay the service charge and add a 20% tip on top?
Or if the service charge is 15% would I then add another 5% to the bill to make up 20% tip? Is 20% enough?

Thank you and looking forward to visiting!!

Weird taste in nyc chicken (I’m from the pnw)

Pretty much the title. Has anyone experienced this? I’ve been to four nice restaurants since living in nyc and the chicken at all of them has the exact same taste (prepared different). The taste is like chemically— like what I imagine hormones taste like. Is this just me? My nyc friends don’t notice it bc they’re just so used to it. LMKKKK

Where to get a hot lobster roll in NYC?

I’m tired of paying $40 for chilled lobster salad on a hot dog bun. I want hot, buttery lobster in a grilled split top bun. Maybe some fries and/or coleslaw on the side. Is that too much to ask? I just want one really good one before summer is over. Thanks for your recommendations!!

Chai Tow Kway (carrot cake) in NYC?

Can’t seem to find it anywhere - any mentions online point to a place that’s permanently closed. Any places that sell this in the city?

What is your favorite Plov spot in NYC?

I went to Brighton Beach yesterday and as is tradition for me when I go to that beach, I make a stop at Tashkent Mkt for snacks. I got some of the Samarkand plov with beef from one of those side counters (instead of one of the big salad bars) and the difference in quality was significant. The salad bar is very nice, but this plov was just the best plov I have ever had. With that in mind, I would now like to try some plov in a proper restaurant. Any recs would be appreciated

Have you ever heard of a Chimney cake? This traditional Hungarian treat has been baked over open fires for centuries.

A chimney cake, known traditionally as Kürtőskalács, is a famous Hungarian spit cake with a hollow, cylindrical shape and a crispy, caramelized sugar crust. It features a soft, fluffy dough inside and is a beloved street food across Hungary and Romania. There is a store in Brooklyn, New York dedicated to making them traditionally and fresh and you can add toppings! Chimney Cake: 269 Brighton Beach Avenue Brooklyn New York.

What does a NYC restaurant use as a substitute for “100% beef” ?

What do NYC restaurants use these days to fill out or replace ground beef?

I ate at a NYC group restaurant tonight that has a special pasta price for Mondays. I don’t normally eat there but was ravenous. I’ve been cooking at home all my life and have made a gezillion bolognese sauces as a quick dinner. What I ate tonight was not remotely beef or any other meat. It had a texture that was not meat like. Almost grainy? (Almost like how ground rice feels in a larb?).It didn’t taste like any low or high grade of beef to me either.
I hate making a fuss, so I didn’t ask at the time, but called after and the manager said even when I pressed what else might be in it .. “100 % beef”

Any thoughts, thank you!!

Rotating Sushi for 10 yo Birthday?

My son and I are visiting NY for his birthday. He loves sushi, anime, etc. We have gone to a rotating sushi place at home. Quality was mid but he thought it was awesome. Any recs for a similar spot in NYC? Again, not looking for the best sushi and fine with tourists places—just the most fun place for a 10y/o boy. Give me your coolest please!

Fresh Pita Bread?

We moved here from Chicago and used to get fresh baked pita & flatbread on the North Side. I haven't found a similar source after moving to Manhattan. I thought Astoria might be a source but my couple of trips there have been great for lots of items. But I'm still looking for a retail store that sells pita that isn't dry, stiff and trucked in from elsewhere. Does anyone have a recommendation?
