Why doesn't defense take damage?

One thing has always bothered me: if someone has an extremely defended position, it seems like it should be possible to "wear them down" over time. Like, you should be able to battle them once and, yeah, you may lose the battle, but a few of their troops will die. So the next person to attack them will have a better chance.

But the way it is (unless I'm wrong, or unless it's changed in New Foundations) is that you will lose, and then in the next battle they'll have the same number of troops and dice so... You'll probably lose again. And then same for the next and the next.

I get that the dice MAY come up different but... It seems to me that another attack - especially from a fresh army - should have a better CHANCE to win, not the same chance.

What am I missing?

Can attacker choose to roll 0 dice?

Hi all,

My group played Oath today for the first time and we loved it; looking forward to the next session.

One question regarding combat, reading the laws we understood that the attacker can choose to roll dice up to the number of warbands on their board; this means that they can choose to roll 0 dice, right? And then kill warbands accordingly to success in the combat.

For example, imagine I have 8 warbands on my board, and I’m targeting the bandits in only one site. Nobody uses battle plans. So bandits will have defense equals to 1 + 1 dice. I choose to roll 0 dice. Then bandits roll blank. So I kill 2 warbands, so my attack is higher than bandits’ defense, and choose to put 1 warband on the site. Final status: I have 5 warbands on my board, and 1 warband on the site, ruling it from now on.

Is that legal? I’m not discussing strategies of why I would want to do that, just wondering if it’s a valid move.

Thanks in advance, guys :)
