Charlie Rose is a hater

The last post I uploaded a video by mistake it was from Democracy Now but this is the interview I meant to post. I didn't like him. I loved her even more when I heard her speak.

Octavia Butler

The contradiction .It's not "are humans smart?" We are. It's: can we ever use our intelligence to control our need to dominate, instead of using our intelligence to serve our need to dominate?

Help me make sense of the themes in Octavia Butler’s books

I am mainly seeking a response from those who have read more than just her most popular books, like the Parable series and Kindred.

I have now read through almost all of her books: Kindred, Parable of the Sower, Parable of the Talents, Dawn, Imago, Adulthood Rites, Wild Seed, Mind of my Mind.

I recently had to stop about 1/3 of the way through Clay’s Ark because I am so sick and tired and unsettled by the persistence of certain themes in her works. In almost all of her works you will find lots of: pedophilia and grooming, age-gap relationships, rape, incest, and human breeding.

WHY??? Especially in the Lilith’s Brood and Patternist series, why are the books so focused on these disgusting sexual themes? And the worst part is that I can’t seem to tell if she is making a critique/argument against these things or if she’s just normalizing them. The main characters you’re supposed to like end up buying into and often enjoying these dynamics of rape and forced breeding and incest. These books would seem to be a wet dream for a sexual predator. What am I missing?

I thought Clay’s Ark was finally going to be different until the family arrived to the secluded village with the mysterious alien illness and the two 16 year old daughters get gifted to older men to be bred. I stopped reading the book once the daughters started to like and crave the idea of their captors.

Help me understand!

!spoilers! My thoughts on dawn by Octavia E. Butler.

I just finished dawn and it was really good. Could have expected that with a writer like Octavia E. Butler. Here are some of my thoughts, they contain spoilers!

I generally dont gravitatie towards science fiction, so I was a little scared going in. As it turned out, I am really intrigued by the aliens and the space setting!

The first 2 parts were amazing. I loved the very first chapter, how we are introduced to the book. I really liked the slowly getting used to the aliens. The internal conflicts seemed really relatable (as far as that is possible in an alien world).

Part 3 was a little mwa for me. It went really fast and sometimes I could not quite follow what happened and why. I really would have wanted to see more of Liliths year of training. The bonding of the 43 people seemed rushed and chaotic. Suddenly Lilith is together with Joseph no buildup whatsoever. And also the connection between joseph and nikanj seemed weird. As well as the moment all the oankali come into the room and 'connect' with each pair. Why are all the humans in pairs, I would not expect people to pair up that fast.

Part 4 was better than part 3, but that ending! I almost cried for Lilith. I am definitely excited to continue with adulthood rites. I had expected book 2 to take place on earth and now I have no idea what direction it will go.

Overal I have to admit that I am a little disturbed by the amount and way of 'sex'. It seems to be way to promenent and at times unnecessary.

Without giving me spoilers for book 2 and 3, what did you think of book 1?

book like parable of the sower (help!)

hello fellow octavia butler readers! i’ve been racking my brain trying to remember what this book could be. It is not an Octavia Butler book but was a recommendation for people who liked Parable of The Sower. It has a red cover and it seems to be about a boy and there seems to be an element of jungle to it. does anyone know the book i’m trying to think of?

Finished “Dawn” and I’m hooked…

Went out and bought the other 2 today. Could i have saved some money if I just bought the big book with all 3? Sure, but I’m glad to have them like this.
Started “Adulthood Rites” and wow it gets ripping fast. I don’t wanna finish too quickly but I feel this series will be re-readable.

Patternmaster

I really didnt like patternmaster. I think my expectations were too high. Ive already read the Parable duology, Lilith’s Brood, Kindred and Fledgling. I love them a lot! My faves are Fledgling and Lilith’s Brood. I looooooove Dawn, but Patternmaster was a slough for me. I did not care about any character and thought the pacing was odd. Is the series worth continuing?

Earth seed

I'm re-reading the parabole of the sower and the parabole of talents and I really feel more than ever all the wiseness of the wonderful Octavia... I think some movement like Earthseed is even necessary in these crazy times... What do you think? Probably this topic was talking in other publications but I want to ask anyway.
