Online research says the options are a shell eating worm; exposure to a constant drip of water; or a practice from the 1800s called “button punching”, wherein people used mussel shells to make pretty little abalone buttons for fashion.
Anyone got any better answers? I’m kinda hoping the button answer is correct, that’s kinda interesting. 😆
Are there any writing groups based in the Western Kentucky area? I didn't have much luck with a cursory search.
