Thoughtful gesture & gift advice to support sister's first newborn

Hi! My sister and BIL are having their first child. My parents are retired and going to stay with them immediately after and my mom is sticking around to help for a few weeks. I work full time so I can't offer the same gift of time (plus she doesn't want a bunch of visitors at first). She's been "nesting" aka meal prepping frozen meals and my mom is also bringing food. I plan to get them a DoorDash gift card, but I wanted to send my mom with a little basket of things for them. Any ideas of thoughtful gestures or items that helped you most?

A wedding gift for my cousin turned into a business idea. Would you use something like this?

A few months ago, my cousin got married, and my girlfriend and I wanted to give her something more meaningful than a traditional wedding gift.

Since we're both graphic designers, we came up with an idea.

We secretly asked family members and close friends of both the bride and groom to share a recipe. Some were real family recipes that had been passed down through generations. Others were funny, completely made up, inside jokes, or even "recipes for life" filled with advice and memories instead of cooking instructions.

We designed everything into a beautiful hardcover book, and it became much more than just a cookbook. It turned into a collection of family history, stories, humor, and memories from the people who meant the most to them.

The couple absolutely loved it, and seeing their reaction made me wonder whether other families would enjoy something like this too.

So I decided to create a small brand called Origo and built a website to see if there's real interest in the idea.

At this stage, I'm not trying to sell anything. I'm simply testing whether this is something people would actually want and whether it's worth investing more time and money into.

I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts.

  • Is this something you or your family would ever create?
  • What would make something like this more valuable to you?
  • Is there anything that would stop you from ordering a book like this?

If you'd like to take a look or join the waitlist, here's the website:

https://origo-legacy-books.base44.app

The waitlist is simply there to help me measure genuine interest before I continue building the business.

I'd really appreciate any honest feedback—positive or negative. Thanks so much for reading!

What axe do I get my boyfriend’s birthday?

My boyfriend is a scout leader and in a few weeks time he is headed to Iceland for the international jamboree. I want to buy him a good axe that can be put in his checked bag without adding much weight to his overall pack.

His father has a good hatchet but my boyfriend mentioned the other day he wanted his own good one. I was reading that Fiskars x7 or Fiskars x13 are good. I’d love some insight into this. Hes already got a pretty good idea about hatchets but doesn’t wanna blow the bank. Nor do I as a college student so what can I get thats good quality for less than 100?

What gift felt the most “this person really thought about me” rather than just buying something nice?

The best gifts usually aren’t the most expensive ones.

They’re the ones that feel specific to the season someone’s in, the kind that quietly say “someone paid attention.”

Could be because it solved a real need, gave them a way to slow down, matched their routine perfectly, or felt like something they’d never buy for themselves but absolutely would use.

Would love examples of gifts that felt genuinely thoughtful instead of just safe/default.

looking for a gift that's not just more stuff

my buddy's birthday is coming up and i'm stuck. hes the type who already has everything he wants buys whatever he needs right away so there's nothing left.

i've been thinking maybe something personalized? like a dog tag or bracelet with something engraved not flashy. just a small thing with a date or initials. something he could wear or keep in his pocket

maybe i'm overthinking. could just get him a gift card but that feels lazy.

what do you get for someone who doesn't want anything

GIFT FROM THE BRIDE SUGGESTIONS THAT PEOPLE WILL ACTUALLY USE

I'm getting married in October and wanted to do something special to thank the 9 amazing friends who are coming to my bachelorette weekend.

We're doing a 3-day girls trip in Paso Robles (wine tasting, pool, good food, relaxing) and then a couple weeks later I'm getting married at the Taco Bell Cantina in Las Vegas 🌮😂 So it's definitely not your average wedding.

I'd love to give everyone a thoughtful thank-you gift at the end of the weekend. I'm trying to avoid the typical personalized tumbler/robe that will probably never get used again. I'd rather spend a little more on something they'll actually enjoy or keep.

Budget is around $50–100 per person, but I'm flexible if it's something really unique.

Has anyone given or received a bachelorette gift that you still use or absolutely loved? Bonus points if it fits the wine trip or Taco Bell vibe without being cheesy.

Would love to hear your favorite ideas!

When you have the talent to give your friends a handmade gift on their anniversary! ❤️

I made this surprise gift for my Childhood friend and his wife with colored pencils! Oh man, how much they adored each and every detail. They were so overwhelmed and grateful.. being an artist I always wish if someone could even write a letter for me.. in today's world, handmade effort for someone is too effortless.. people dont value that much but for me, it holds the world.

I'm not a developer, I'm just a working mom in my 40s who kept gifting body lotion — so I learned to build a free smart gift reminders site

As a working mom in my 40s, I have every intention of being the friend who sends the gift — the one that arrives before the birthday, feels personal, and makes someone's day.

What actually happens: Facebook notifies me on the morning of, I scramble to find something, and my close friend gets... a candle. Again. (My other friend got body lotion two years in a row — don't judge me 😅)

So I built The GiftWise — a free tool that:

Sends you email reminders 3, 5, or 10 days before birthdays, anniversaries, and other occasions

  • Suggests gift ideas based on your recipient's personality and lifestyle (only if users decide to come back to the site to see recommended gift ideas)

No subscription, no account required to try the gift recommender.

I'm not a tech person at all — I built this by learning as I go, using whatever resources I could find online.

Would love to know: do you have a go-to system for gifting, or do you also low-key panic every time? Happy to answer any questions or take brutal feedback. 😄

Birthday gift idea for a new mom who needs self care?

I want to get a birthday gift for my friend who just became a mom. She’s 37 and used to really love skincare but now she doesn’t have much time for it anymore.

I’d love to get her something that helps her get back into it a little but still feels easy and realistic to use when you’re exhausted. What would you recommend that feels like a treat without being that time consuming?

Gift for a coworker I've known for 2 weeks

I am an overthinker so please excuse me. I started a new job 2 weeks ago. It's a small setup and we work from home. We are a team of 4 including the founder. I have only met the founder and haven't met the other team members. One of the senior team member is leaving the company next week. So the founder initiated a meetup as a little farewell for her. I have known her for only 2 weeks but she is really sweet and helpful. Tomorrow I meet her for the first time and although she is there with us till mid of next month, I don't know if I will met her later. So, I though as a sweet gesture I should get her a gift. I was thinking of getting a small jewellery organizer which is something she can actually use. Does it feel too excessive considering I have know her for only 2 weeks and haven't even met her in person?

Update: Thank you to everyone who responded. You guys were right, the jewellery organizer was too much. I don't know why I thought that was an appropriate gift. I got her a nice chocolate bar and attached a little note. I gave it towards the end while she was leaving. She did seem surprised but accepted it and said we can keep meeting. But I really don't know if we will meet again so I think I did the right thing to give it. Leaving the job seemed like a difficult choice for her too and she said she didn't know what she wanted to do next. I did feel awkward while giving it and although I didn’t need to give her anything, I wanted to.

P.S. I got myself a jewellery organizer instead lol

What the hell do you get as a gift for someone who instantly buys themselves absolutely everything they need?

I have a very good friend who literally orders right away whatever crosses his mind.

Because of this, it has become completely impossible to surprise him anymore, and I don't know how to avoid the classic envelope with money.

How do you guys deal with these people in your life who buy themselves absolutely everything they want before you even get the chance to get them a decent gift?

Edit: I'm thinking of getting him an engraved solid wood cutting board from CustomJoy.com, because there is no way he could have already bought a personalized item.

But have you ever managed to impress such a picky person with something strictly made to order?

Looking for birthday gift for my friend who is a new mom!

Hi everyone! Not sure if this is the right place to post but have a friend with a 1 month old, and her birthday is coming up soon. She has received a lot of “gifts” from people, but they’re really just for the baby.

I have already gotten her something personal, but I would also like to get her something for her mental/physical health after having a baby. Anything to keep her busy or something to relax. If any of you guys have ideas or if there was something random you had that made a difference I would love the help!

Need help outdoing my brother’s gift for our dad

It's my dad's birthday soon and my brother always has to win. He already got him this really cool custom garage, so that completely rules out any personalized stuff for me.

What’s something awesome I can get him that isn't a generic wallet or a tie? What are your go-to dad gifts that actually get a good reaction?
