Gift registries for weddings - what’s the appeal?

My boyfriend and I aren’t getting married yet, but we’re probably going to at some point, and we’re currently in the process of buying a house.
We’re going to a wedding this Saturday, and it’s actually the first wedding we’ve been to where there’s been a gift registry. We ended up having a look through it and were absolutely fascinated by how specific it was lol

There was a new bed for their dog, loads of Le Creuset stuff, a really expensive bottle opener, and then some cheaper things like towels. But it wasn’t just “here’s a list of things we like” - it was SO specific. Click the link, and it would be like: they want this particular item, in blue, in the large size. It made us laugh hahaha
Anyway, it got us talking about what we’d do if we got married. Would we have a registry? What would we even put on it? And I realised that I really don’t like the idea of a gift registry (asking for stuff 🤢).. but can see benefits..

I’ve never been a birthday/Christmas wish-list person. Even as a kid, I was brought up with the idea that if someone is buying you a present, they choose it because they know you and think you’d like it. The monetary value isn’t really the point - it’s the effort that went into choosing something, and then getting to see the person’s reaction when they open it.
A registry seems to go against that completely. You’re basically telling someone exactly what to buy you, down to the colour and size.
However, my boyfriend has made me realise that not every family operates like mine does. He’s not a wish-list person either, but his parents are terrible gift buyers. Like, absolutely horrific lol
It’s not that we want expensive things or even particularly want presents from them - we’d rather receive nothing than some of the bizarre things they have bought us. So I can actually see the practical appeal of a registry if you have lots of relatives who have absolutely no idea what you’d like.

And that’s where I’m conflicted, because I have extended family/friebss who also don’t really know what we’d want. So if we got married, a registry could potentially save everyone from buying us something completely random that we’ll never use and feel obligated to keep..

But then there’s the whole money thing, which I also don’t really understand. I know lots of people have a “honeymoon fund” or ask for cash towards the house (I can’t imagine feeling like it was okay to ask for X amount of hours of the plumber’s time or something), etc., but I’ve never really understood why getting married means people should give you money. You’re choosing to get married - why is that something everyone else is expected to financially contribute towards?

Maybe I’m just coming from a certain background when it comes to presents, but I am curious:
Do you like wedding gift registries? Do you think they’re useful, or do you find them a bit weird/tacky? And if you’ve got married, did you have one? What did you put on it? How did you word it to your friends and family on the invitations? Do you think age matters?

Also, because in the UK, we don’t have a bridal shower culture which I think is typically where a lot of gifts are given in the USA..?

ANYWAY, I think I’m going to make a completely hypothetical, just-for-fun wedding registry for us and see what I come up with 😂

Edit
I think I prefer the idea of physical gifts over ‘cash’..

Gift idea for new boyfriend?

My boyfriend (20M) and I, (18F) have been dating for about 2-3 weeks now. He is the best man I could ever look for, and constantly pays for me. He cooks for me, loves on me, and treasures me while I struggle with my physical health. I want to repay him somehow. But he’s… “prideful”. In the sense he doesn’t believe men deserve gifts and that women should be taken care of and not pay for the man. He isn’t sexist in any way, but he’s real sensitive about it. What can I get for a man like this? He lives on his own, is blue collar (construction) and has a hard time accepting gifts. What can I get him? Any ideas? Preferably something non-expensive and not super super thoughtful. It sounds horrible but I want to come across as casual as possible so I don’t scare him. 😅

Happiest feeling

Today I gave my daughter-in-law my new couture dresses and custom-made hats that I had bought for occasions that have passed.
It felt surprisingly wonderful to let them go and see them have a new life with someone I love. ❤️

Items for pack for busy mom?

Hi all. I’m not a mom but my little sister is. She’s an absolutely incredible mom to two toddlers, one of whom is autistic & requires extra support. She & her husband also own a wildly successful small business. She works her butt & I am so incredibly proud of all she does!

I would love to get her some sort of care basket or pack to support her & let her know I care. The problem is I’m pretty low income & disabled so what I can get her (both cost & ability to actually get the item) is limited. I also don’t the ability to make stuff (knit, crochet, etc). I’d say I could spend up to $125 max but I’d feel a lot better if I could keep it at or below $100. Ideally, I could mail it to her since I struggle to drive sometimes & she’s really busy. I’d feel bad making her take time out of her day to stop by my house to pick up something that’s supposed to relieve stress.

Thank you for all you do! You have the hardest job in the world & don’t get the recognition, respect, & support you all deserve!

Gifts that are 50 dollars for a 50th Birthday

Hi Everyone, I'm looking for 5 gifts that are $50 dollars for my mother's 50th Birthday so far I have

A card with 5 $10 gift cards

An engraved dior lipstick

A pasta making class

But I'm having trouble thinking of two more gifts. The price can go slightly over, the $50 is just more of a cute gimmick that I was excited about since most of the stuff fell in that price range. She's not necessarily picky but she does like things bought with intention and meaningful.

Homemade gift okay to give?

Hi! My girlfriend recently made this gift for a long time friend who is getting married. She is pretty crafty but never worked with resin before and is a little distraught about how this came out. She’s considering not even giving it to her friend (who is also very crafty) and either making something new or just giving money. Does anyone have any thoughts? The quote is from her friend’s wedding song!

Edit: for people saying it’s cheap. We are also giving a big cash gift.

Gift Giving - Question for All Therapists

Hello! My therapist is starting her own practice soon and I would like to give her a gift for her new office and as a thank you for continuing sessions with me. I was thinking a fancy pen, nothing crazy expensive, about $40.

My question is, would this be something appropriate to give to a therapist? I did give her a mug for Christmas, but that’s it. Any other ideas on what would be a professional gift? Or should I just hold out and give her a gift for Christmas? Or nothing at all? Thoughts?

Need gift ideas for a teenage girl

My cousin is 14, turning 15 in a month.

She likes animals(reptiles specifically), plushies, Supernatural(TV show), baking, reading, writing, making jewelry, true crime, horror, drawing, and has shown interest in robotics/engineering but haven't really done anything related to it.

She doesn't use skincare or makeup and her parents won't let her have new tech.

unique 25th anniversary gift ideas for my parents

My parents are hitting 25 years this October and my siblings and I are trying to figure out what to actually get them that matches how big of a deal this is. Silver is the traditional theme apparently, but everything in that category feels like it's aimed at strangers, not people who've actually been through 25 years together. They're not sentimental in an obvious way, they don't keep scrapbooks or anything, but they do bring up old stories constantly, especially the early years before any of us kids existed. Trying to find something that honors that history without being a generic "25 years" engraved item.

Thank you gift for son’s girlfriend’s parents

Our son moved across the country for work last year and has been dating a girl from the area. We went to visit, and, while there, her parents hosted us at their lake cabin for one of the nights. I misunderstood and thought they were just letting my son and gf bring us up there for a day (but her parents were there too) and so I didn’t bring anything- like a bottle of wine, etc. They were so kind and had planned stuff, took us to the lake, to lunch at their favorite little restaurant, for drinks at a local marina- even ordered my 16yr old dtr a milkshake made of local berries while we had drinks, cooked us dinner, and just generally were so hospitable. We had great conversation, and they were amazing with my teen dtr (who is sweet and mature but could have been a bit bored as the only “kid”) showing genuine interest in talking with her, gave her some great college/career advice. But most of all, they are clearly a safe place for our mid 20’s son who moved alone to the other side of the country and knew no one-that is priceless! Obviously I want to send a heartfelt thank you and we extended an offer to visit us, but I’d love to send a gift of some sort as well. They boat and like to cook, have two cute little dogs, and are renovating an old family lake cabin. We are from N OH (on Lake Erie) so maybe something local to us to share? Idk I need help!

Wedding Registry Ideas for Men

My fiancée and I are building our registry. She has the plates and glassware handled and is letting me add whatever I want! My side of the list is lacking, so I’m trying to crowdsource as many ideas from people.

Budget: most things on our list sit under $100 to $150. We’re also building a small “splurge” tier for group gifting, roughly $300 to $600 per item.

Possible categories for suggestions
• Fishing. Inshore saltwater.
• Grilling and smoking. (have a Big Green Egg).
• Cooking (have a vitamix, ninja creami)
• Gardening & home maintenance items (just bought house)
Technology and Home office Setup (own an Xbox series X and a bunch of monitors from my work)

What I already added to the list
• Zojirushi rice cooker
• Standalone deep freezer
• A good knife set

Links are hugely appreciated. The Our registry platform lets us add anything with a URL.

Tell me the misses too. What did you register for that seemed great and now lives in a closet? That’s honestly just as helpful. Probably missed a category or two so open to other ideas you have fell in love with.

Thanks in advance. Happy to answer questions if it helps you narrow things down.

Advice on monetary gift

My son is getting married and it is both his and his soon to be wife's second marriage. They already own a house together and are raising kids from their first marriages together. My husband and I want to give them a monetary gift but I can't decide how much to give. I go back and forth on different amounts from $500 to $1,000. My question is, if you were in my son's situation, what would you expect as a gift? I don't want to disappoint him.

Edit: I wanted to add that they are not having a wedding, they are just going to get married and then having a small, intimate party to celebrate with just immediate family.

Birthday surprise for childhood best friend

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to find ways to make my best friend‘s birthday special. We met when I was a kid and lost contact for a while and this will be our first birthday back together. Does anyone have any traditions they do with their bestie or ideas to make her birthday special?

I’m also hoping to get some help on a project I wanna do for her birthday. she turns 22 in September and I have an idea planned for her gift and I have no idea how I could go about doing it. She has a book series that she loves from her childhood and I want to record me reading the books for her and buy her the hard copies and write my thoughts in the margins for her to keep on her bookshelf. Does anyone know of any good apps or ways to record this for her? Is there anything else I can add to that project to make it more meaningful?

Thanks for reading! Have a good day guys

Gift ideas for my 21f bestfriend.

My college best friend is turning 22 next week. We just graduated from engineering, and she might be moving to a new city soon for work.

I’d love some gift recommendations for her! Here’s a bit about her interests:

Formula 1 (huge fan)

Coffee (loves specialty/craft coffee or cool coffee gear)

Transitioning to post-college life (moving to a new city, starting her first job)

Ps: last bday i gifted her one f1 frame with bible verse (we are both christian)

And she gifted me a football jersey for my bday
