Pokémon Company’s Ultimate Scheme
So my theory is:
unlike most video game franchises, who polish and refine their games before launch, Pokémon is constantly working towards the “next best thing” possible on Nintendo hardware. Creating a consistent stream of “new”in order to sustain consumer interest.
Since generation 6 they have been cranking out a half baked game to play on the latest hardware. Gen 6 and 7.1 were prototypes for USUM the best they could produce for the 3DS. Gen 8 & 9 were them polishing and perfecting Gen 10. The switch launch, while very successful because of the pandemic, was also just the beta version of Switch 2.
Since they “peaked”with their third versions for GB, GBA and DS, we haven’t gotten third versions ever again. DS’s life cycle complicates my theory because it lasted so long they just kept improving on the Pokémon Platinum build, we can agree B2W2 are really fantastic, “peak” Pokémon games.
3DS had sequels, SM was a spiritual sequel to XY and perfected in USUM, utilizing the entire capabilities of the 3DS over the course of its lifetime.
With the switch we no longer got “third versions” we got DLC. With each DLC we can see them polishing and perfecting the original formula of the games.
Raids in SwSh were polished and tweaked for Tera Raids in SV. I could bet $10 (I’m incredibly broke) that in W&W we will get another iteration of co-op Raid battles and they will be polished and perfected.
The Pokémon Legends Arceus game was a soft launch of sorts. Pitching the idea of how they wanted battles to work in this hypothetical “perfect” switch game. In Legends 2 they improved on the battle system now including Abilities and held items staples of the Pokémon franchise for years. Easing us into their vision of what Gen 10 is going to be.
Proof:
• Breath of the Wild was made for Wii U. Switch launched so that the ultimate Zelda game (at the time) would run smoothly and be enjoyed more. Zelda devs are more serious about creating the best games but aren’t afraid to wait.
• Since the first generation Nintendo higher-ups have directly influenced the production of games.
Pokémon has a hold on our brains by constantly introducing more and more and creating a consistent stream of new content. For thirty years my brain has been needing to catch them all, an impossible task.
