Was any member of the legendary trios in Generations 1–3 intentionally designed to underperform relative to its stats or its counterparts?

In Gen 1, it's Articuno. In Gen 2, it's Entei. In Gen 3, it's Regirock.

What these Pokemon have in common is that they're widely considered the weakest members of their respective legendary trios, and by a significant margin. To the point where it stands out very clearly.

Was this just a coincidence or was it by design?

Out of the three mentioned articuno might be the least bad, and the least obvious case. But if you've ever played Gen 3 OU you'll notice that moltres is fairly commonly used. Zapdos is pretty much in every single team with thunderbolt, and hidden power ice/grass. There are also thunder wave / rest/toxic sets.

In Gen 2 entei is very obviously the worst. If you didnt know any better and were using this guy and someone told you that entei has an 580 BST youd be shell shocked. He feels so much worse. Raikou and suicine is widely used. Suicine is arguably the best setup sweeper in the first 3 gens (excluding box legendaries)

Regirock also feels way worse than what the BST would suggest, but not because of bad stat distribution (like entei has), but because of the rock typing. Being a slow and defensive rock type has to be the worst combination in the game? The only truly strong rock types in the first three generations appeared in gen1, and gen2, which is aerodactyl from gen1, and tyrannitar from gen2. Who succeed because they are massively offensive. Aggron suffer in a similar way (defensive + rock typing). Steelix is literally thanos compared aggron, immune to thunder wave and toxic), although most pokemon with several quad weakness is just generally not gonna be very good.

As someone who is a fan of regirock (think he looks cool etc), ill explain why this guy suck. His strongest move is 112.5 power rock slide with 90% accuracy (accounting for stab). He also got moves like earthquake, superpower and explosion (the latter two has higher power, but with very significant drawbacks). So his best move, just isnt that strong. Regirock also gets completely ruined by status effects. Will-o-wisp, toxic, and thunder wave completely ruin this guy. Donphan, a 500 BST pokemon is literally better than regirock in almost every single scenario. Donphan has a 150 power move (Stab eq). Can switch in on thunder wave/eletric moves. Shitstomps salamance (with hidden power rock), metagross and tyranitar (regirock also beats salamance/tyranitar but loses to metagross). Learns rapid spin. Can actually status and disrupt more efficiently. Has an easier time using Rest and switching in /out due to feeling more defensive due to typing. The only benefit regirock has over donphan is that he has an easier time surviving non-stab super effective special moves. So he can survive a special coverage move. Both of these fall over to stab super effective special moves. Ill admit that donphan definitely punches above its 500 BST weight. Its a very well optimized guy. But man if regirock had ground typing instead of rock, this guy would feel like a true legendary pokemon, and it would unironically be one of the strongest in gen3.

As for registeel and regice. If you've ever done the battle factory in emerald you know how increadible regice is. If you've ever played Gen3 OU you know how powerful regice and registeel can be. Registeel is probably the best regi, and without a proper check he can single handedly disrupt the entire enemy team. He's a bit worse ingame in a playthrough of emerald tho, since you wont really be using seismic toss and most likely wont be statusing as much either, but he can be made unstoppable with curse.

How early did the game developers have the idea that Silver was...

...Giovanni's son?

In FR/LG, it's heavily implied that Silver is Giovanni's son, due to the remark from the scientist that had stolen the Sapphire ("no, you can't be Giovanni's son, he has red hair").

It's made clear pretty early in G/S/C that Silver hates Team Rocket, that they pretend to be strong when together, but if you get them alone, they're weak. You meet him several times where Team Rocket is present (first in the Mahogany HQ, and then in the Underground of Goldenrod after Team Rocket takes over the Radio Tower). So it's clear he is after them.

Something I've also noticed is that Silver shares same overworld eye sprite as Team Rocket members (let's just call them "mean eyes"). In Gen I, Team Rocket members don't have the mean eye sprite...but Giovanni does. This might or might not imply a connection between Silver and Team Rocket in Gen II. Again, Silver might have those eyes because he's a bad guy throughout most of the main game.

So it's interesting to think about if they already had the idea that Silver was Giovanni's son back then, or if they only planned it from FR/LG.

Battle Tower shiny challenge - Lvl 20!

Second phase of the challenge cleared. Team names are inspired by the series The Boys. There are no Unown left at the Ruins of Alph after all the Stat Exp grinding 😅 onto planning the team for Lvl 30 now!

Are the known mechanics of roaming legendaries missing something?

I'm following the regular guide everyone uses for catching Entei and Raikou, and I've noticed something strange about the roaming behavior:

I was in route 32, moving in one section of grass, far from any transition or area change. I checked the Pokedex map when I entered, the Entei was there in the same area as me. After a few encounters (of which I ran from) and a phone call from a trainer, Entei moved to another route.

I'm struggling to find any info about a situation like this, could it be that common knowledge on this subject here is missing info? I'm not super into pokemon like some people, so forgive me if this is a super common thing.

I had no idea Stadium could play the G/S/C

I got an Apple CRT secondhand and was able to get a converter to change AV to VGA. This allowed me to hook up my N64. While trying it all out, I put in my Crystal to try out Mystery Gift for the first time and clicked in to the wrong option. After several minutes of loading, Crystal started playing… 🤯

I had no idea it could do this through the N64. I had thought this was only possible via SNES Gameboy player and the GC GBA player.

Too bad I beat Crystal last month. I would have totally played it this way instead.

A small thing, but an immense achievement

Hello! Prepare for a big text, Iol I don't have anyone else to talk to.

I got my copy of Pokémon Crystal back when I was 10. It was very symbolic for me, for obvious reasons. I already watched the anime and played Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2 with my brother and cousins, every weekend together. These moments still are the golden days for me.

I remember I was VERY afraid of my file corrupting for whatever reason... I didn't want to lose my precious Pokémon. My first starter (and still favorite) was Chikorita. He's in the second pic. I still have it in the Nintendo Box!

I grew up, learned the competitive, played with my cousins both online and in person... We got good, we played a lot of our locals championships and won many. We even played a little in Smogon (and back in the day, Shoddy Battle and Net Battle).

I loved the competitive and was very cautious while playing with my cart in both my GameBoy and the Stadium 2 GB Tower. I still remember my frustration when, after running behind Entei's path the whole afternoon, caught it in the Ultra Ball, and then I slightly tilted my Transfer Pak... immediately lost all my work! I was really pissed, while my brother laughed 😂

Back then, Shinies weren't that big of a deal. I managed to caught a Graveler in my brother's Red version, and when I saw it in Stadium 2, it had this strange golden star and was orange in color... omg, that freaked me out. I thought it was a glitch, and a glitch can damage my save file. I showed to my brother and cousins, and no one had any cue what it was. What I know is that not long after I released it, just to be safe 😂

When I discovered what Shinies were, I finally understood. And was very surprised to see sparkles in the Viridian Forest when I was just passing in the grass... Pidgey was my first Shiny that I really caught and kept (other than the Red Gyarados or that Graveler). He's in the third pic, still as a Pidgeotto.

Fast forward a lot of years. I still care about the Pokémons, but not the franchise anymore. I don't fear any glitch anymore. I duplicated a lot of items with MissingNo and even used one device from a friend to put a Celebi, Ampharos and Girafarig into my cartridge (the only three that I never even saw since I was 10; I was the only person in the family to have a gen2 cart).

I then discovered, in 2024 I think, this glitch that "transfers" the DVs (and other minor things) from one Pokémon to another, and immediately wanted to have my horde of shinies.

Link: https://youtu.be/SArRwe72qoY?is=ZT4HO3EcRngFxi1x

Side note: I hunted many Shinies since then, in versions like White, White 2, X, Omega Ruby and Moon. I still have boxes and boxes full of shinies (soft resetted, hatched from Masuda Method, traded with friends, gifts from championships placements, hacked into the game, from Mystery Gifts, from Horde Encounters, Chain Fishing, Poké Radar, Random Encounters... you name it).

Back to the Crystal and Stadium 2, I've never seen many, many Shinies in the Stadium 2 and was mesmerized when I discovered that many later in gen3 changed colors. I loved many that I saw, and used the glitch to have then using my classic Red Gyarados as the main one to be "cloned". Seeing the first pic, if you're smart, probably already know where I'm going.

As an old and seasoned player, I saw that ideally, I needed to have a Shiny with Atk DV of 15 for maximum damage output. I bred many, many with the Shiny Ditto that I got using my brother's old Red cart and Red Gyarados with Mimic. But the majority of the offspring came with, at maximum, with 0 HP and 14 Atk. This reeeeally bugged me. Until yesterday.

Suddenly, I wanted to have a Shiny Exeggutor with Ancient Power. I already used the glitch to have my autumnal palm tree, but to have Ancient Power (as it is an Egg Move) I needed to hatch it. And so I did. Luckily the one that I used the glitch became a female, and I had one male Exeggutor in the Nintendo Box with Ancient Power. After 89 eggs (the longest I hatched in my Crystal cart) I got my Exeggcute and also suddenly, it came to me to check it DVs. I put all vitamins and everything and when it reached level 74 (I think) the Atk needed to be at 214 to be 15 DVs, and it was. Holy crap.

After I saw that, it came to me that I could've done the glitch with that male one with Ancient Power... If I took this obvious and shorter path, probably I wouldn't have got this gem.

Previously when I discovered the glitch, I also hatched a lot of eggs to try to get some new DVs shinies, like all 6 starters, Larvitar, Dratini and so on. I even hunted for specifically Shiny Eggs, like Magikarp that has the lowest steps count, to see if one of them had the 8 HP and 15 Atk. To no luck. Until yesterday!!!

Again, sorry for the wall of text. As I said, I have no one to talk about this. Hope the veteran players had some good travel to the memory lane with this post. :)

Pokemon hike 2

Spent an hour hiking up a trail at Crater Lake National Park, finally encountering Yanma at the peak, only to accidentally faint the dang bug

What is it about the "vibes" of Pokemon Crystal that feels unmatched even compared to Emerald, HGSS, Platinum and Black/White 1&2?

Of course, this is no shade to the aforementioned game titles, as all of them are objectively seen as better games than crystal by most people.

And yet, the vibes, atmosphere and music in Crystal feels unmatched for me more than those games. I can't explain it. Is it Y2k vibes? Color pallete? The aesthetic? The music? All of the above or something else? It feels dreamlike and hypnotic that was never again repeated after Gen 2.

Want to relive crystal

Hey all, I want to play crystal/silver/gold again. I love gen 2. I'm looking for a rom hack that is slightly less difficult than crystal kaizo, and sticks to the 251 gen 1-2 pokemon.

I have tried quite a few recently, but they really weren't that difficult. I dont want to be min maxing for every trainer fight, but I want the game to be hard and close to vanilla.

Please helpp.

Trading

I’m just trying to confirm my suspicion. I have the digital version of crystal. Since the shop on the DS is closed now, the only way I can trade would be to find another DS that already has a digital copy of gen 1 or gen2 on it correct?

What is pain?

Pain is missing a 100% accuracy attack 6 times in a row without your accuracy being decreased nor your opponent's evasion increased. The situation specifically was battling Red's Blastoise with my Electabuzz using Thunderbolt. As far as I can tell, the chance of this occurring is 1 in 4.8 billion. Technically speaking, that's actually a bug in Gen 1 where 100% accuracy attacks are actually 99.6% accurate, but it hurts just as bad for it to happen.
