Remember that episode of the simpsons where Ned yells at Lenny and he’s all like “I’ve only been here a few minutes. What’s going on?” That’s basically what children are like. Yeah kids are ignorant and sometimes do stupid things like setting fire to the living room rug, but we should go easy on them. Afterall, they go through things we don’t have to deal with. Like when was the last time you had to worry about homework or being nice to your little brother? I don’t even have a little brother.

So in the United States the supposed age of adulthood is 18. However there are many contexts where a person can‘t legally have certain legal rights and abilities until later or even are granted before turning 18 (You can drop out of school in most states as well as get a drivers’ license in most states at age 16 as well as be tried in adult court well before 18 in most states but can’t legally drink alcohol or gamble in a casino until turning 21). But honestly the U.S should really just have one legal age of adulthood and not multiple depending on the specific context.

So many posts have people in the comments giving explanations for things in the video / picture that was posted but they too are just completely guessing or are only half right.

This becomes particularly apparent in subreddits you have a niche knowledge about. There’ll be a post asking why does so and so? And the top comment will have hundreds or thousands of upvotes but won’t actually be correct. Then when you reply and say well actually no, you get downvoted to oblivion with people saying I think they know what they’re on about they got loads of upvotes. Like of course they did because no one really knows much about many things so it sounds correct. I got 30 downvotes yesterday for replying to someone saying there are no uncontacted tribes in the Congo.

Never met so many armchair experts than on Reddit (particularly surrounding geopolitics) but after 9 years I do feel as if the hostility has increased. More and more you get called stupid for trying to point things out, and people seem less open to changing their mind because they’re a supposed expert on a topic because one time they saw so and so. Maybe it’s because Reddit’s age base is getting younger and because the platform is rapidly growing in users. Doesn’t help that on the internet people vehemently don’t like being called wrong.

I do like the discussion, and I don’t think every subreddit should be like r/askhistorians where there can only be one response or so, but I do feel like discussion is getting worse.

Popular opinion: Old men having a 'crush' on teenagers, like barely teenagers who look older...but like for example they look not even much older, like who look still not legal, like a 13 year old that looks about 16-22. It's not okay and people joking that the old man has a 'crush' on them, and wolf-whistling and laughing even after they say they are creeped out by the man, and laughing about it is NOT okay, it shouldn't even needed to be said but it's fucking disgusting. It's disgusting to begin with, and what makes it even worse is when people joke about it. When a minor expresses that they feel creeped out or uncomfortable, laughing it off or turning it into a joke completely minimizes the danger. Normalizing or laughing at predatory behavior isn't funny; it's enabling. It gives them a greenlight, it's disgusting, and If anyone disagrees with this you're no better than the predators, ugh

if Amazon loses licensing, you lose the books you have “bought” - this is not correct approach, licensing is done incorrectly here between publishers and Amazon… License running out should result in Amazon not being able to sell any more copies, but buyers should still have what they bought - exactly the same way as paper books, they will not enter your home and take the book from your bookcase, just because Amazon licensing run oit, so why they are doing it with ebooks?

The funniest thing about this subreddit is that actually unpopular opinions usually don’t get upvoted.

If you post an opinion that most people agree with, you’ll get tons of upvotes. But if you post something genuinely unpopular, people downvote you because they disagree with it.

Isn’t the whole point of the subreddit to post opinions people disagree with?

It basically rewards popular opinions while punishing unpopular ones.

So the 7 day week has existed for thousands of years at this point after being invented by the Babylonians who named the days of the week after a total number of 5 planets in the solar system (Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn) and the sun and moon because those were the 7 things other than the stars that they could see in the sky. However ideally in my opinion a week could be increased to have 10 days which would still fit into the current 12 month calendar pretty nicely (unlike 8 or 9 day weeks) and would include a day of the week for the remaining 3 planets not given a day of the week (Earth, Uranus and Neptune) in addition to fitting nicely exactly into 30 day months. This 10 day week would ideally have 6 workdays and 4 weekends with the workdays being from Monday to Saturday and the weekend being made up of Sunday, the day of the week named after Earth, Uranus and Neptune.
