Micro Machines NES

My brother had this game when we were kids, and I loved it. I played it more than he did, and I ended up trading him Q-bert for it. Lol

I'd say the NES version is my favorite. There's one on PS4, but I haven't tried that one yet.

Anybody have a favorite version of Micro Machines?

Toobin' (NES)

Toobin' was a game i first saw and played in its Arcade form. I was always attracted to the unique theme, and diversion it offered from the more common arcade genres. The controls were fun and unique as well.

The NES is lacking in some aspects, but I still find it incredibly fun and relaxing. The controls are very forgiving, and despite its simplicity, it's a blast.

Any Toobin' fans, which version do you prefer?

Does anyone else think the Phantasy Star 1 Fishman looks like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle gone completely wrong?

I stumbled onto something I just can't unsee. When I was a kid playing this on the Master System, I used to think the Fishman was one of the coolest, most menacing things in the game. Our 8-bit imaginations were really doing some serious heavy lifting back then.

Looking at it today... all I see is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle that had a horrible accident at the Technodrome.

Seriously, look at the stance and that green turtle-skin tone. It’s like Leonardo tried to mutate with a swamp monster, but the machine glitched and gave him a bright pink pool noodle for a tongue. Once you notice that giant piece of neon bubblegum permanently hanging out of his mouth, any shred of 1987 intimidation factor just completely evaporates.

Am I crazy, or does this guy belong straight in the Baxter Stockman reject pile?

Who knew mowing lawns could be so fun

A friend told me to try out Lawn Mower. Im playing it on my Anbernic. Its a homebrew game that was released in 2011. The look is totally retro. Im liking it... its a pretty chill, relaxing game. Just over here cutting grass. 🙂

Home Arcade

This is my NBA Jam Arcade 1up. Got it on clearance for $200 about 5 years ago. It's a fun system, and a great addition to my music room. I love the light up marquee, 4 players, and fact that it has 3 different game versions.

I want to see your home arcade setups. Original, Arcade 1up, Homemade, Etc. Let's see those cabinets.

Sunset Riders (SNES)

Sunset Riders is like Contra in the Wild West, and I love it. Every time I play this game, I ask myself why I dont play it more. The Arcade, and SNES versions are amazing. I can't speak to the Sega version, never played it. Anyone familiar with that version? I feel like this game needs more love.

Retro?

My friend and I are debating what is considered Retro. They argue that PS1 era gaming is the retro stopping point. I argue PS2 era gaming is retro, and im pretty sure I consider ps3 era gaming retro as well.

Their main argument is accessibility and availability. And the fact that most handhelds play up to PS1 level games.

Mine is that the leaps are so big in technology that time is less relevant, so somewhat newer games could be considered retro. In other words the power of a ps5 vs a ps3 is so much that ps3 is retro.

Thoughts?

[Meta] Can we define the eras of consoles to be more objective? Or is just Gen I, Gen II, etc., the way to go?

I come from a music background, which has a very interesting music history paradigm, specifically defined by different eras/periods (i.e. Medieval, Baroque, High Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, Modern, Post-Modern, etc., and many more specific/niche/cultural periods as needed).

I noticed on ar ecent thread discussing whether or not PS2 is considered "Retro", while this is a completely fair question, the "retro" line will forever be shifting forward in time. You can envision a day where Switch 2's are retro.

The most objective thing we have is the "Gen I" and "Gen II" consoles etc., but while hard and dry they do not paint much of a picture of what the actual era entails. "Retro" can paint a better picture but the issue is that that picture gets more and more blurred over time as the retro span grows wider and wider.

What say you of eras, periods, etc? How about things like ARcade era, 8bit era, 16 bit era, early 3d era, etc.? What other distinctions/cultural/technological frames can we have to help define better this unending gaming question?

Gaming Companions

My cat likes to chill with me while I'm gaming. Im curious, do any of you guys have pets that like to hang out with you while gaming? If so, I would love to see a pic.

I am playing Garfield Caught in the Act on Genesis.

This is Anakin, named after Anakin Skywalker. 😁

Not sure if Mr. Anakin likes lasagna as much as Garfield. Lol

The retail demo kiosk.

Standing there for an hour, neck tilted at a 90-degree angle, completely ignoring the rest of the store until Mom came back to find me. I’d be totally lost in the glow of the screen until that tap on the shoulder meant my time was up, or I’d hear the impatient "cough" of the kid standing behind me waiting for their turn.

The tension of that silent line was real.

Did anyone else have this CRT babysitter growing up? What was the one game you’d play until your eyes glazed over?

Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES)

Tearing it up with Chun Li. Playing on my Anbernic Rg40xxh. SNES version. Some of the best box art ever with E. Honda. The different color outfits were cool to.

Who's your favorite character?

Lemmings (NES)

Lemmings should not be this fun. I remember a friend who never owned a console loved this game and SimCity. I also love the simplicity of this game. I had the ps1 version of 3d Lemmings, and didn't care for it nearly as much as this version.

What lemmings game did you prefer?

Entry-Level Handhelds under $50

Hey everyone!

I'm looking to pick up a nice entry-level handheld that won't break the bank—specifically trying to stay in the $40–$50 range.

My main criteria are:

Easy to set up (plug and play preferred).

Kid-friendly (durable and simple UI).

Pocketable (needs to actually fit in a pocket for on-the-go gaming).

I've been looking at things like the Anbernic RG28XX for its size or the Miyoo Mini Plus for that classic feel.

The cool part: If we get enough good suggestions and I find the right deal, I’m thinking about doing a giveaway for one of these to a member of the community as we reach 1000 subscribers.

What are you guys playing on lately that fits the budget? Drop your favorites below!

WeaponLord

WeaponLord on SNES

I remember renting this one as a kid, and loving it. I havent played it since then, but I'm thinking of doing a playthrough based on strategy this time, instead of the younger me's way of just pushing all of the buttons as fast as I could and wishing for the best.

Did anybody else ever play this game?

Newsflash: Algol System Saved by 15 year old and her magical cat!

Man, Phantasy Star feels more like an eaely Turbografyx-16 game than a Master System game.

So...I just focused on Phantasy Star this week from Sunday onwards. I played a grand total of 15-17 hours, which is probably on the short side and there are reasons for that...

I bought the Sega Ages version on Switch several years ago and only played a few hours. I aimed to finish said version. It is still available for $7.99, having not been deslisted last year when Sega deslisted many of their older games from digital storefronts. The Switch version has some notable QoL improvements from the original. Most notable among those are 4x experience and meseta from battles and the encounter rate is significantly reduced (I would assume at least 1/2). The net effect is a somewhat faster farming/leveling experience. The other, as you can see from my screenshot, is an auto-mapping system which makes dungeons a much more pleasant experience and thus speeds things up significantly. You can also switch between PSG and FM soundtracks. It also includes multiple screen filters and scanning options. I'm using the CRT filter and it does a decent job of replicating the glow and softer lines. You can play in original mode and full screen I'd you want the most authentic experience, but I played in "Ages" mode with all of the QoL improvements.

Some of the FM tracks sound flatter than the PSG versions but the dungeon, Medusa's tower and final boss tracks are pure 🔥. The Motavia overlord track is also pretty great.

It's been great to go back and revisit this classic, but man is it rough (like all 8bit rpgs). I wonder how hard it could have been to include a bit more dialogue. Its very sparse. We're just so accustomed to modern games having well fleshed out stories and characters that these old games feel lacking. It's also kind of amazing how quickly bosses go down compared to even early 16 but games.

Regardless of any complaints, I really enjoyed the ride and was pleasantly suprised to find that I remembered more than I thought possible considering I've only played through it once back in late 92'or early 93'. Oh...and if you finish it, this game has a seriously impressive credits sequence for the hardware. As an old Sega-head it was awesome to see all the devs with their old nicknames instead of their real names in the credits.

Note: screenshot taken at the final boss room door showing Alis' lvl 27 stats and equipment. And, for those who aren't terribly familiar with this franchise, all 4 original games have an interconnected story despite occurring centuries or millenia apart.

I really hope some of you are able to finish this game and enjoy it as much as I enjoyed replaying it!
