One of the first run and guns I remember playing on Nintendo, Ikari Warrriors (NES) is a super cool port of the amazing arcade game. Although lacking the unique rotary joysticks that the arcade had, this NES port still has all the awesome arcade features that we all loved. I always kind of struggled with the game's difficulty level but nevertheless I always enjoy giving this shooter a play through. 

I had never played Circus Charlie before, but it was mentioned recently and it looked really fun, so I decided to try it and I am really enjoying it.

You play through 6 stages in the circus. Fire Rings, Tightrope, Trampolines, Balance Balls, Horse Hurdles and the Flying Trapeze. If you beat all of the stages, the game starts over at a faster pace. I'm glad I gave this one a try, and it is a game that I would recommend. 😊

Based off of the comic strip in Mad Magazine, Spy vs. Spy (NES) is a really fun game, as well as very nostalgic for me. You play as 1 of 2 spies, and you have to collect all of the hidden items, while trying not to get killed by the other spy. Once you collect the briefcase and all of the items, you escape through a door. I always loved the cut scenes at the end of the levels.

Do you remember Spy vs. Spy?

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) has so many iconic moments. One of them that I always loved doing was the slot game. It was usually pretty easy for me to get the mushroom, but I rarely got the star for the 5 extra lives. I honestly remember only getting it like once. Lol. It was so awesome when I did manage to do it though, and it was totally just luck.

How often did you manage to win the 5 extra lives by lining up the stars?

We will suggest Jaws (NES), a simple game that is surprisingly addictive. Travel between areas battling jellyfish and stingrays while collecting shells and other items as you grind to raise your power to ultimately battle and defeat the dreaded Jaws.

Released in 1997, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1), is a direct sequel to Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, and set 5 years after its events. Often considered a sleeper hit this game has developed a cult following throughout the years and has become a beloved Playstation staple. With the objective to defeat the entity named Shaft, who is controlling Richter Belmont, you must acquire items to free him from Shaft's influence. It seems fitting that we celebrate this wonderful game for the 40th anniversary of the original Castlevania game.

We are very excited and pleased to have Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) as our October game of the month. Where does Castlevania: Symphony of the Night rank for you in terms of games in the Castlevania franchise?

Soldiers of Fortune (SNES) is a top down shooter that has a lot of charm imo. It is set in a steampunk inspired world. The plot of the game is super cool. A time travel experiment goes wrong and creates a machine that turns humans and animals into mutants, and the goal of the game is to destroy the machine.

There are 6 characters to choose from, and you choose 2 to play with. This game can be pretty difficult, imo. If you get hit your life goes down a substantial amount, but even though it can be a challenge, it is still a fun game.

What do you think of Soldiers of Fortune (SNES)?

Another month down, and another excellent Game of the Month playthrough is sadly coming to an end. The Legend of Zelda (NES) is an absolute classic, and it was so fun to revisit this game again.

It had been a while since I had played The Legend of Zelda (NES), and I found myself having to look up some tips at certain points along the way, but it still felt just as great playing it and still stands the test of time for me. This title ranks pretty high on the list for me compared to other Zelda games, and I would have to rank this one 3rd. The first for me would be A Link to the Past, and my 2nd would be Ocarina of Time, but all 3 hold a special place in my heart.

Our very first Game of The Month play through was Link's Awakening on the Game Boy Color, and it was nice to come back to another Zelda game for our Game of the Month this month. Both are phenomenal games.

Dragon Warrior (NES) is an absolutely amazing single player RPG where you control a young hero who sets off to defeat the Dragon Lord. Leveling up your hero as you travel on your journeys, you will fight, run, and cast spells in this epic quest. An awesome choice for a super cool early Nintendo RPG.

There is no other computer game more nostalgic for me than Solitaire. I can remember being so bored at my grandparent's house as a kid and playing this for hours on their computer. Lol. I always played with the deck that had the dark castle and the moon, and it was so satisfying to see the deck flowing across the screen after winning.

Is this as nostalgic for you as it is for me? Which deck did you play with?

A Boy and His Blob (NES) is such a unique game. When I first played this game as a kid, I thought it was so cool how you could feed your blob jelly beans to get him to do different stuff.

I always loved feeding my blob the Root Beer Jelly Bean and having him turn into a rocket that I could ride. I can remember the first time I did it. I was so confused and had no idea what was going on or where I ended up, but boy was it fun.

Can you remember the first time you fed the Blob a jelly bean?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) is one of my favorite games of all time, and it also has one of the coolest start screens that I have seen. Everything about it is perfect, imo. You have Link riding across the fields of Hyrule on Epona with the big, bright moon in the background, and the music is beautiful. The start screen really sets you up for a wonderful journey, and every time I see it, I feel the excitement of starting a new game.

Is this one of your favorite start screens?

I love the concept of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES). I really like RPGs and I also love Mario, so this game checks all of the boxes for me. The graphics in this game are fantastic. I remember when I first saw this game played, I was very impressed by how good it looked. A super fun addition to the Mario franchise.

How do you think Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES) ranks in terms of other RPGs for the SNES?

I was playing Chrono Trigger the other day, and I was thinking it would probably be super fun to hang out with Lucca. I think if I could pick 1 character to be my best friend from a video game, it would be Lucca Ashtear. I have always thought that she was so awesome being a brilliant inventor, and she is positive and peppy. 😊

Which character from a video game would you choose to be your best friend?

Stunt Race FX (SNES) has always stood out as a unique game for me. I liked how it was 3D and used the Super FX chip. The googly eyed cars and cartoonish style is super fun and really fits me. I did struggle a bit with the controls, and had a few run ins with some walls. Lol.

There are 4 modes that you can play. Speed Trax (racing), Stunt Trax (obstacle course challenge), Battle Trax (2-player), and Test Run (practice and time trial). In the video above I am playing Stunt Trax mode. This game played like a Mario Kart type game of the era, but it always stuck out to me as being different.

Do you like Stunt Race FX (SNES)?

Hook is a game that I always have fun playing. I may be biased as Hook is one of my favorite movies, but I don't think so. The controls are really great, imo, and Peter Pan has some pretty cool moves that you can use to defeat your enemies. I really like using the whirlwind attack, and you can also use things around you as weapons as well. Like in the video, it's so satisfying to cut the ropes and totally crush the pirates.

Do you remember Hook in the arcades?

Willow has always been one of my favorite movies, but I never got to play the arcade game when I was a kid, but I played it recently and really enjoyed it. I told my friend how much I enjoyed it and they mentioned how cool the marquee was in person, so I looked it up and boy were they right. The marquee is super cool. I love the rich colors, and the detail of the artwork.

I really appreciate how this game follows the plot of the film, and the levels are all settings from the movie. The graphics are great, and so are the controls. I'm really glad I finally decided to play it.

I played Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers a lot as a kid, and I still enjoy playing it nowadays. It's one of those games that isn't too difficult, but still challenging enough to be fun. The graphics are great, and the controls are fantastic. You can play as either Chip or Dale, or there is a 2-player mode where 1 person plays as Chip, and the other as Dale. All of the bosses are super entertaining. My favorite is the caterpillar and fighting Fat Cat is always super fun.

Do you remember Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (NES)?

Alien Soldier (Genesis) is a newly discovered game for me. It is definitely a challenge, but I am liking it so far. The graphics are beautiful, and I really like the option of having different weapons to switch between as you play. There are a total of 6 weapons to choose from, and you can equip 4 to use as you play.

You play as Epsilon-Eagle after being cast into the space-time continuum while battling with a terrorist group called Scarlet. This game is incredibly difficult, imo, even in easy mode, but if you have some patience to spare I would definitely recommend giving this one a try.
