Anything with a bit of revolt or "radical normative"?

Hey there girly pops! Lately I've been reading a lot of books where the plot is "ok so there's these two girls and they kiss." And its been great! I especially like the parts where there are girls kissing!

But I recently started to remember there are books where other things happen. And so I tried to think of what types of plots could be fun to check out.

You know what I've never read? Girls smashing the state... while kissing! Surely that exists? I'm open to anything in this vain but I'd prefer if it was a little less political-treatise and a little more be gay, do crime. Like meeting up at a riot or the local anarchist clothes swap or something.

“Evil” stepmom x her stepdaughter who hates her! Needs tension, good smut but no erotica, + an age gap. Something maybe similar to book!Rhaenyra/Alicent from House of the Dragon

I know this is an absolutely insane request, like please do side eye me. But, I’ve been reading so many good book accurate ASOIAF fanfics about Rhaenyra/Alicent recently that I need to read this in a published book ASAP. If you aren’t familiar with these two, they have a lot of beef and lowkey tension in book!verse. Rhaenyra’s mother dies and her father Viserys, the king, remarried Alicent Hightower. Alicent was ok with Rhaenyra at first, until Viserys names Rhaenyra his heir to the throne. Alicent is pissed because she believed her first son would be heir to the throne (due to him being a male).

So I’m basically looking for an “evil” stepmother x her stepdaughter book. FMC 1 marries the FMC 2’s father. I don’t really care if the marriage is genuine or whatever. FMC 1 doesn’t like her new stepdaughter, or at least is outwardly mean to her. FMC 2 hates her new stepmother and thinks she’s using her father (or something akin to that).

It doesn’t even have to be that exact scenario, and the stepmother FMC doesn’t have to actually be evil. I’m just wanting that tension dynamic of them disliking each other but also being so attracted to each other. Also I need open door spice! I’m NOT looking for erotica books. I do want a plot. Also wanting an age gap if possible.

Book Search Based on Cover Art

Hello all!
Hoping you can help me find this book- I saw it in a YouTube recommendation video months ago and now the cover is in my head and I can’t stop thinking about it.

The cover is a dark, royal purple and it depicts a ballroom with large pillars on either side. There are two women, faceless and appearing very small on the cover, of whom are standing on opposing sides of the ballroom- one in the top left corner and on in the bottom right corner. I remember the title being quite long and I don’t believe there are any names in the title.

Don’t hold me to the plot but it might have been set in regency period with one of the women being set up to marry a nobility and they have a secret romance.

I appreciate any help I can get! Thanks!

Help me complete my reading challenge!

I have a personal reading challenge I've been trying to complete since 2024 and I'm finally committed to finishing it by the end of the year. I prefer reading queer books, so I'm wondering if people have sapphic book recs that meet any of the following criteria :

Sobriety

A book where the main character is sober, and navigating addiction and recovery.

Already on my radar :

  • Season of Love by Helena Greer

Foster Care/Adoption

A book where the main character has been in foster care and/or adopted OR takes care of a child in foster care and/or adopts.

Already on my radar :

  • I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm by Mariama J. Lockington
  • What the Woods Took by Courtney Gould

Book About Books

A book that centers the importance and beauty of storytelling.

Chronic Illness or Pain

A book that features a main character with chronic illness or pain.

Long-Distance Relationship

A book that features a main character in a long-distance relationship. It doesn't have to be a romance, but I guess that's probably the most likely genre.

Assistive Technology

A book that features a disabled main character who uses assistive technology (e.g.: wheelchair, cane, mobility aids, hearing aids, specialized software, etc.).

Already on my radar :

  • The Unbroken by C.L. Clark

Translated Book

A book that was originally written in a language other than English, but that has been translated in English.

Already on my radar :

  • Thirst by Marina Yuszczuk, translated by Heather Cleary

I'm open to any genre, either adult or YA, and mainly looking for fiction since the prompts don't really make sense with nonfic. Thanks!

Possible A.I. use or am I being paranoid?

Found a book by the author Aroura North on the kindle app. It’s about a couple of best friends that are forced to spend a week in the same bed while helping a friend with planning their wedding.

I’d just finished a pretty emotionally heavy book so I was looking for something light and sweet to read to get myself back in a good mood. I downloaded a free sample, realized it was pretty good, and then went to the kindle store to finish my purchase.

However, once at the store I got curious and scrolled down to where it showed some of the author’s other books. One of which had a very similar name to the one I had intended to buy. I clicked on it and read the description to find that it’s EXTREMELY similar to the book I wanted to read.

Every book by Aroura North that I could find was published not only this year, but in the past two months. Maybe she’s been writing these for a few years earlier and then just not publishing them? I looked at the covers for some of the other books (including the one I wanted to read) and noticed that a few of them def looked like they might have been AI.

Is there any way To know for sure? What I read didn’t really SEEM like AI, but there’s like too many red flags in my head for me to feel ok reading it without checking. Though I don’t know how.

It’s a bit of a mind-fuck that I have to worry about this…

Specific age gap recommendations

hi!

looking for age gap recommendations but with specific dynamics. I'm not looking for ice queens, but rather an older MC who is chill, introverted, and a younger one who is responsible but outgoing, who becomes a turning point for the older MC.

It doesn't need to have a lot of drama, but I want something well-written and well-developed, without rushing.

thanks!

Help me find this book I read before??

Okay, I feel like I’m losing it—I cannot find this sapphic romcom I read quite awhile ago!

It was set at a cooking or baking reality competition show and the romance was between one of the contestants and the host (or maybe a judge?) who had kind of a rebel reputation? I seem to recall they were sequestered in the same hotel and maybe had some run-ins at the hotel gym…

This isn’t a super recent book—I probably read it in the late 2010s, although it’s possible it was the early 2020s.

Anyone have any idea what I’m talking about??

Sapphic Lovecraftian story

I came across a literal lesbian romantic comedy story set on R'lyeh on Literotica. It's got just about the whole Outer Gods/Great Old Ones pantheon put together, from Nyarlathotep to a Hound of Tindalos and Shub-Niggurath (one of the two protagonists is her daughter) to Cthulhu.

It's fairly explicit (on par for the site).

Yes, there's a shoggoth, too.

Books with a mid-to-late 20s MC and toxic/homoerotic/all-consuming female friendship!

Hey all! I've found myself recently very into the kind of book that follows a main female character who is tangled up in super intense female friendship (usually homoerotic). I recently read Girl's Girl by Sonia Feldman which fit this bill, minus that the characters were teens. Some other reads that I'd say fit this bill have been Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney (currently re-reading), and I just read Strange Girls by Sarvat Hasin (good but ultimately kind of mediocre imo). There's just something about when an author can sweep you up into these friendships even when you can feel the ick that I love to read. I'm especially interested in reading books where our main characters are in their mid to late 20s. :)

Looking for Trans Retellings

Hello All!

I'm a part of a book club where everyone picks a book based on a theme then reports on what they read at the end of the month. It's been a fun change to talk about books monthly without having to read exactly what everyone else does, and you get a lot of good recs.

This month, the theme is "Retellings." It's broad on purpose. There are classic myths and fairytales (Malice, Song of Achilles, Cinder, etc.), but they can also be retellings of other popular film or fiction. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies would qualify, for example.

I have arbitrarily decided that I'm only going to read books that fit the theme and are trans. So for this month, I'm looking for any trans retellings people know. Trans characters. Trans author. Ideally trans femme but I'm not at all committed to that.

Can anyone help a girl out?

Books where a girl who lives a terrible life is whisked away by a lesbian?

Are there any books you can think of where a girl who has a rough life, maybe her parents are dead or assholes, she has a bad job, an abusive boyfriend, behind on her rent, etc. Like just a bad life (it doesn't specifically have to be like that, it's just an example), but then some lady comes along to whisk her away from that life, either to be nice or maybe she's a hot criminal and wants to kidnap her. Anything you can think of with that vibe?

Codename Lotus by Yiliana Ferran

Unpopular Opinion:

I've read about 30% of this book, and one thing that keeps nagging me is the use of em dashes, and how much it makes me feel like this book was either written with the help of AI or has been heavily edited by AI. Some of the wording gives me that feeling too.

Now, I could be 100% wrong about it, but it's an itch I keep getting while reading, and I wanted to ask if anyone else who has read this book felt the same?

Does All Fours eventually get gayer?

Hi gals!

I saw this book described as a queer book a few times, and yes, she alludes to lesbian relationships is the past and her child in nonbinary, but I’m almost halfway in, and the *plot* is straight SF. All she’s done so far is pine for a man and rhapsodize about the dimensions of his unit.

Given that I don’t find her especially likeable, I’m having doubts about whether I want to spend six more hours of my life on this.

I just ended an abusive straight marriage that made me realize I’m a much bigger lez than I gave myself credit for. I have zero tolerance for centering mediocre men left. That’s what work is for!

Jasmine Throne/Lotus Empire fan art (2 slides)

The way these two cared for each other, against everything that would have made them enemies 😩❤️‍🔥

Also, Tasha Suri has announced a third sapphic story release. I have not even read The Isle in the Silver Sea. I’ve just been trapped in my own mind making Burning Kingdoms fan art 😆
