Should I keep using tissue paper patterns or should I get a PDF pattern printed on hard material?

Hello, I have a mccalls m6973 mens tank top pattern at home

https://simplicity.com/mccalls/m6973

This is a tissue paper pattern, and it's fine it's just hard to work with, I have to painstakingly pin the tissue paper to the fabric one pin at a time, then cut with either siccors or a rotary cutter.

That's not even mentioning the paper loves to tear, I have to constantly tape it back up with scotch tape, it never folds right, it constantly crinkles into a big mess, it never wants to go back into the envelope that it came out of, it's just all around frustrating to work with.

However, I took a class from quality sewing a vacuum in Tacoma Washington, and I used their rotary cutter and fabric cutting table.

I some how got the idea that I could print out a new mens tank top, PDF pattern, using some kind of thick cardboard or chip board like material, and use that to cut out this mens tank top pattern at home.

I have been working on making a cutting space at home, and I was able to duct tape two folding tables together to make a 48x48 cutting space, and I ordered a 48x36 self healing cutting mat which is in the mail.

I figured that if I was able to get a PDF pattern of a mens tank top, and find a commercial printer company, I might be able to print out the exact pattern pieces using some kind of hard card board, wood, or chip board material, meaning that my patterns won't tears, bend, fold or fray.

On a different thread,

https://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/board.pl?t=133103

A person named DTsewingstories

introduced me to this free pattern from thread theory

https://threadtheory.ca/collections/pdf-sewing-patterns/products/arrowsmith

And this is A PDF pattern that I can download for free (after I give them all my information)

Now I am in Tacoma Washington, and I took a class from ryliss bod, and I asked her about my idea for printing patterns out in the way that I would like.

She informed me that the best place to print out sewing patterns near me, is a place called ARC document solutions, in downtown Tacoma.

I called them up and they said they do have experience printing sewing patterns, and that they can print anything I want, 40 inches wide by 300 inches long.

I asked them if they could print the pattern on some kind of hard material to make it easier for me to cut out my patterns and they said that they could and that I would cost more.

So I wanted to ask does anyone have experience doing this?

If so I have a couple of questions.

1_in your experience, is it better to get a PDF pattern printed out on a hard material rather then using the tissue paper patterns?

2_what hard, stiff material did you use to print out the pattern? How does it hold up? Is it ling lasting and doesn't fray or bend or fold?

3_how much did you pay?

4_how long does it take to print? were you able to give the printing company the PDF file the same day and come back and pick it up? Or did you need to come back tomorrow? Or was it so fast you literally just waited right there in the store and took it home?

5_can you just print out the PDF file straight onto the hard material? or do you need to print it out on some kind of paper, cut it out with siccors, then go back and have scanned then copied to the hard material? What exactly is the process?

6_Or should I just not bother with all of this and just stick with my tissue paper pattern?

Thank you

Looking for a multifunctional DND bag pattern

Maybe a bit more of a niche/geeky question. I'm looking to start my sewing adventure and have this idea in my head to sew a bag to hold all of my Dungeons and Dragons things such as: books, character sheets, dice, mini's, tablet, etc.

Any ideas, tips or inspiration are more than welcome 🥰

Wanting to make a custom coat/capelet combo

I want to make a custom costume for a convention and know very little about sewing garments from scratch. Is this coat too complicated? I'm thinking of the capelet as a 3 panel piece with a stretchier cotton blend for the cowl collar, but quilting cotton for the main body and coat. I could also sew a liner to add more structure. Any pattern ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Circle skirt

Solved :) Every time I make a circle skirt the waist is longer than the waist band. The waist is 23 I made a pattern for 24 inch waist I added an inch. I cut it from paper so I could let the pattern be cut long ways. I cut it out I was careful. I put in a stay stitch on the waist. I sewed up the sides. My waist band is 24 inches plus 1/2 seam allowance. I went to put the waist band on and it was to short. I laid the pattern out it still matches the waist didn’t stretch now I’m just super confused and annoyed this keeps happening. The radius it gave me was 3.75 I’m so confused. Please help.

Help drafting skirt with winged side panels

Hello everyone ! I’m trying to recreate a skirt with winged side panels similar to the photos attached. I’m not sure where to begin with the pattern.

My initial idea was to start from a basic skirt block and use a long yoke with princess seams, but I’m not sure if that’s the correct approach.

Best Sewing Patterns for First Time Making a Top with large cup size and small shoulders

Hi, I just started sewing and want to make my first top. I have a short torso, large cup size, but small shoulder and small band size. I know I will likely need to do FBAs often, but for my first top ever I really want a pattern I can follow with no adjustments so I can get a feel for basic construction.

I would love any pattern recommendations that could work for large busts as written.

I was going to try the matchy matchy sewing club color block, but it seems like that is drafted for the typical b/c cup so not sure if it will work for me anymore.

Plus size peplum A line

Looking for a pattern similar to this silhouette from Eloquii- not necessarily with a button down shirt waist.

I've tried searching peplum A line with a set in waist, almost like an empire bodice. How else can I describe this shape?

Thanks for any help!

Hamilton Spencer Jacket Pattern

Hello all! I’m looking for the pattern for this jacket in the larger sizes! (Or the regular one too, I forgot where I land in the chart). I went to go buy it yesterday but the Etsy shop that sells it is closed. Does anyone have it or know someone who does? Thank you!

I want to make this type of summer dresses for myself as I am too broke to buy new clothes. I’m not able to find any free pattern. Can anybody help me, please? I have an old fabric, which looks exactly like the blue one, showing the picture.

I am very confused about how I can make the fitted bodice

Every single designer seems to have a quilt coat/jacket. Do you have a favorite?

Hi, all. I thrifted a bunch of quilting cotton remnants and was thinking of making a quilt jacket (with my general project timelines and indecision, starting now would have it optimistically ready by October).

So far, I am considering:
Helen’s Closet’s Wildwood
Spaghetti Western Sewing’s Rue
Sew Liberated’s Retazo
Daughter Judy’s Thompson

However, literally every single designer seems to have made a quilt jacket pattern (I counted at least six released in the last year!) so I know there are plenty more options. Has anyone tested multiple and have a favorite one they want to vouch for? Do any of them have any great finishes/design details that aren’t immediately evident in their item descriptions?

I searched Reddit already and the posts I could find were either from a couple years ago (when many quilt coat patterns out now weren’t even released yet) or were in the quilting subreddit (which I feel like might have slightly different preferences from garment sewists as their focus would be more on the textile show-off opportunity than the jacket design details, and mine is the opposite). Thanks so much!

Fourth of July Digital pattern sales?

I’m signed up to so many pattern designers and I didn’t get a single one that said they were having a sale. I used to save up to get a few during the sales but they seem to have dwindled to nothing over the past few years.

Anyone have a list of sales before it’s too late? I don’t know if it’s my email that is the issue.

Which patterns would you suggest as a first for pants with a fly and for a jacket ?

I did end up buying daughter Judy’s pants and a jacket, but the instructions are a bit vague. I was wondering if I should buy another pattern to understand better how to do it and then fill in the gaps of information there.

Kids pattern similar to Helen’s Closet Orchard Dress?

Hi! Just as the title says- I’m trying to find essentially a kids version of the Orchards dress. Simple silhouette, spaghetti straps, for woven fabric that doesn’t require a zipper etc.
