This might have been asked and answered. Is Molly ok when Google enforces the new app policy which claims to ban any apps not certified by Google in Play Store?

I would seriously donate 100 euro every year if development would get rid of Electron apps and choose to use qt or even better only native developed apps.

Also the ability to backup your history (encrypted ofc) to iCloud or Google Drive connected with your passkey.

I was recently switched from Debian-based Linux to Fedora and found out there is no official Signal client for it.

However, I found this forum, which claims it's an official signal community, which has a thread about the .appimage signal version

Can somebody please verify if it's a trustworthy source?

First of all the question is hypothetical, i started using signal a couple of days ago and i really like it !!

So my question is if Android On-Device Backups are tied to my phone number or no.

Assuming i have the backup folder on an external drive and the 64 alphanumeric passphrase for the backup, can i restore it on a new phone and number if i don't have my old phone and number ??

I searched a lot but i couldn't find any answer for that specific use case.

Why is signal so slow? Why is the resource usage so high? What can i do?

Sorry this post went on for way too long. But here's a short tldr: I have used signal as my main app for messaging for a couple years but in the last 6 months or so i dread opening it. Everything i do on it is so slow and overheats my phone, it's honestly unusable. Anything i can do? Getting it even a little faster would help. Thanks!

I've used signal for years now and I've loved the app and after telegram shit the bed me and everyone in my country switched completely to Signal.

In the Last maybe 6 months or so i don't get notifications (except the ones that signal wants to let through with 0 consistency) but that's not really my problem. It's sooo slow when i try to do anything on it and even opening it i have to sit on my "groups" or "1on1" tabs for 60-180 seconds for it to show my chats?? I could say that MOST of the time it takes so long that i just force close the app and try again. And the search which has always been kind of bad (which is fine) is just about unusable now because it takes so long and IF it shows my search results and i dare to click one of them the group chat just stays empty and it either crashes or i just can't get myself to wait for the chat to load for 60s or more. And when i press the "back" button it has to do the whole search again....

And sending and receiving messages is extremely slow as well. I usually just send my message, then i go do whatever else and after like 5 minutes i have to check if the message has been sent. I could take some of this on the chin for the privacy (trust me i used early session and simplex i can accept some slow and badly optimized software for privacy) but recently my phone has started to overheat really fast and aggressively when I'm on signal or the app is even running in the background. And i don't have a flagship phone and even as a "budget" phone it's not the newest of it's line. But the hardware is pretty good and this doesn't happen with any other app like with signal.

My friends also have been complaining about these things and they have many phones from pretty new iPhones to latest android flagships. And everyone has similar issues especially recently with the overheating, slow messages and the search being unusable.

What most of us have in common is that we have a lot of groups in signal. I have like 170? Or something signal doesn't tell you how many groups you have. But my friend, she only has 20-30 and she has these problems as well. Could the amount of groups be slowing signal down? I've disabled all the backups and no photos or videos in these groups is saved for me unless i press them. But i think my issues are worse than any of my friends because I'm losing my mind over this. I use signal as my main app for messaging but i dread opening it. I'm just searching online for any and all tutorials or reddit posts on how to make signal faster and I've tried everything I think could help. I've reinstalled many times and I've tried to clear caches and stuff that could slow the app down. What I've not done is deleted ALL the data that signal has on my phone because the reinstalling is already a terrible experience everytime.

Sorry for the long post... If you have any tips on getting signal to work faster, use less resources or even some other software that i can message other signal users through please throw them in the comments. Any and all tips you have i will try (after i do a little bit of research) I'm desperate :D

As it stands, I have one phone that I use for both work and personal communications. People from work find me via username. People from my personal life find me via phone number. I can afford a second phone now, and I plan to set up signal on that device while also keeping signal as my main messenger for my personal phone.

What is the best way to separate things? I'd like my work connections to continue being able to find me by username. If I delete my username from my current phone, it will take about a week to be available to the other device. There's a risk that someone else snags my username in that time. There would also be an awkward transition time where new professional connections would have no way to reach me by usrname.

If I transfer my account to the new phone, will I lose all my chat history on the old phone when creating a new account (even if I have backups)? Would anyone who I have an open chat with be alerted that I transferred to a new device / number?

In retrospect, combining things was a bad idea, but here we are.

I saw that story with the girl that got 15 years in prison for PRIVATE messages on WhatsApp and think it's completely dystopian...

A few sources led me to Signal and so I wanna ask if it really is fully private and encrypted.

If I was a drug dealer or serial killer (I'm not, just trying to make a point), can I still use it comfortably or will they still check messages?

Again I don't have anything to hide but my humor with friends is quite something and I don't wanna feel like I can't joke PRIVATELY with friends because the app is listening or will think I'm serious.

Okay, whoever/whatever messed with the emoji suggestions on signal-desktop between 8.9 and 8.10 really screwed up what was once working. I don't know what vibe coding suggested this, but it needs revert... I used to type :party and would get the party hat. Now, I get suggestions for anything BUT party hat emoji face.

Seriously ... :tada: even at the END of the suggestion list... "stuck_out_tongue" ... how does that relate to :partying_face: ?? Literally, ANYTHING except something related to partying or celebration is suggested in the list here... WTF!?!?

:smiling used to bring up "smiling_imp" first, but even EXACT MATCH doesn't bring up the target emoji!!! WTF!?!?!?

Whatever used to be the emoji suggestion based on what was typed -- it wasn't perfect by any means, but at least, it was predictable AND mostly close to what you were targeting. This current version of semantic nonsense is just not acceptable in my eyes and needs to go!!!

I know this thread isn't official signal support, but man, this really hurt my support for Signal... I'll file a formal ticket about this in hopes it'll turn around.

My request is pretty simple.

I have a new phone and I want to transfer all my signal chats from my old phone to my new phone.

So I obviously tried to do a backup on my old phone and then use it to log in on the new one.

But signal added, that you have to pay to take more than the last 45 days with you.

I really need to chats, but I can't but a payment method in there.

Any ideas how to make it work?

I thought about making a local backup and then transferring the folder to the new phone.

Could this work?

Feature:

• Following notification levels per chat (group or individual):
  • mute
  • notification for all messages
  • notification + vibe for all messages
  • notification for @ messages only
  • notification + vibe for @ messages only

Background:

Not all chats or chat groups are equal, there are some individuals that are priorities that should not only generate a notification but also a vibration, but others only deserve a notification for when you next check your phone and others that you only care about when you open the app.

This is a bigger issue for group chats, because you have the same issue with regards to priority/importance, but they are inherently more noisey on average, as their are more individuals.

I’m on IOS. I wanna communicate whatever i might wanna instead of just being on the receiving end but worry that could compromise me.

Twice in the last six months, I have been sent a message saying that “something” went wrong with my account and that I needed to reset my username. I have a pin and a recovery key stored, but was never prompted to use them. Having no other option, I followed the steps and once back in the app, I am removed from all of my group chats. I have no linked accounts on other devices. I only use it on a modern iPhone. Why does this keep happening? What an absolute grade F user experience.

Weird: I took my iPhone to check my messages and the Signal app was not there anymore. Just gone.
I had used it 30-45 minutes before I realised that.
I know I did not delete it by mistake.
How’s that possible?

Last night I had 3 contact names change overnight. One is my own- I had made a small shift to my contact name in signal yesterday and this morning it reverted back to the original.
The other two are interesting. One is how the real name of a user but I had saved their contact in my phone under an alias.

Second is brand new user to Signal -contact in signal was saved as an alias according to user.
Overnight the contact changed to her real name but not how I saved her as a contact. Katherine vs Katie.
It doesn’t make sense?
