STIHL 012 AV Butterfly discoloration
Working on a grimy 012. Pulled carb and butterfly is discolored. Is this age? Oxidation? Overheating? Not sure myself.

Trying to find this part replacement! Amazon showing all kits with piston and rings, but not this connecting rod. Help. I am in GTA,Toronto
I acquired a commercial Husq zero turn as part of an land purchase. I don't know its history, but it was built in the early 2000's, Kawasaki (FH721V) engine, ~2100 hours. I think they were pretty good about fluid changes. They did work her hard though, and she's tired.
AFAIK, the hydraulics (separate hydrostat pump & motor) usually degrade over time. I am more worried about the engine. I am wondering, when it finally goes, is it usually a catastrophic failure? Or does it just become a money pit that people eventually get tired of spending on, or it wears enough that it no longer performs well, and a decision is made to send to the scrapper? So far, parts for the mower are cheap, and I am learning ton working on it. But I'm trying to mentally prepare for the day when I somehow lose her, and how much I should spend in the meantime.
Edit: I should have mentioned, I am new to small engine repair & maintenance - I had never even changed the oil in a push mower before this. So I don't really know what I'm doing yet.
WeedEater riding mower (who knew?) Tecumseh engine. Headlights get brighter with engine revving, but nothing going back to the battery. No voltage regulator that I can find...
Hey all,
I have timecutter z4200 and mowed no problem last week. When I started up the mower Sunday, I was unable to get the right control arm to move the mower.
When I move it forward, it has a screeching noise but no movement. The other works well and as a result I’m just spinning.
Any idea if I’m missing a basic setting or if something came loose?
I will definitely be putting wd40 down once it’s fixed but that’s not the issue regarding why the back right drive wheel isn’t moving… thoughts?
Not sure where to start. Thanks!
Bought a cub cadet with a locked up engine. The cylinder was rusted up and full of gunk. Got it freed up but the cylinder looks too bad to do anything with. I could continue to hone it but I’m thinking it would smoke really bad at best?
Hey guys, I’m losing my mind with Honda GX390 rebuilds and hoping somebody here has ideas. I currently have 5 GX390 engines. The weird thing is the FIRST engine we rebuilt smoked like crazy at first, then we rebuilt it AGAIN without really changing anything important, and suddenly it worked perfectly fine. Now the next TWO engines I rebuilt are smoking badly again. What was done:
Any help appreciated because this is driving me insane.
Hi all,
I am replacing an old carburetor on this RM281 2 stroke blower. I am pretty sure I will be able to tell which of the 2 fuel lines will be the
one that will be for the primer to pull from the tank into bulb. I will test when the new carburetor comes and see if it fills to prime. Anyone tell me if it is the top, longer hose to the bottom hole behind the primer for sure?
Thanks
It was locked at first wouldn’t spin 360° wud go one way and stop back the other way then stop, pulled spark plug and that magically freed up the engine, replaced spark plug replaced carb, verified spark is there replaced coil in case of weak spark set gap with business card, verified spark still there, checked valve lashing and flywheel key still won’t start won’t even pop off with starting fluid, pulled off exhaust still nothing so what else is there to check?
I have an ‘04 Yamaha Bruin 350 and lately its been idling rough and doesn’t wanna start even when warm, feels slower than before but that might just be me overthinking it, does anyone know what it might be? Any suggestions are awesome, thanks
Note: gasket inside of carb was pretty crusty looking but other than that, the carb was pretty clean, so that was going to be my next try. New to repairing so not sure what else might be the problem.
It’s a craftsman 30”, electric start and shute control, about 10 years old.
Hopefully this is the right place for this, a family member just called and said they left their gas can outside and it may have gotten rain in it, and when they put gas in their push mower, the mower “ran, and then stopped working”. I’m going over after work, but what am I in for? Can I dump the gas out of the mower and put in fresh? Should I try to fire it up and see what happens? TIA!
realize a few seconds of video may be useless but thought I’d try to get some thoughts as getting this 15 year old engine checked by a pro would cost couple hundy. Started last time I used to mulch leaves in November …decent vibration but engine is mounted securely as far as I can tell🤷♂️
Need help troubleshooting a 9" meat slicer that won’t stay on. It's a 9" gander mtn commercial meat slicer. The original problem was the slicer would only run while holding the switch. I replaced the power switch with a new one, but the new switch does the exact same thing. Power cord looks okay visually What else should I check?
I have little to no mechanical experience.
I’m new to handling any kind of equipment so forgive me if this is a no brainer.
My handheld blower stopped working this evening after using it for a while in the afternoon. The primer bulb wouldn’t fill. I took the air filter cover off and poked around. the fuel lines looked fine. The bulb itself didn’t seem to have any cracks. After inspecting for several minutes, the primer bulb was suddenly filled with gas. I had tried to pump it a few times while I was looking at the fuel lines, but it did not fill while I was doing that.
So the blower is working now, but I don’t want to run into this issue again. Thoughts?
This is a Wgen5300DFc model westinghouse generator that starts and runs no problem but does not produce power. At the outlet (selector set to 240vac), I have about 5vac phase to phase. Because of how loud the alternator area is when it runs, I suspected the stator but no visible problems. The rotor resistance through the brushes (harness disconnected) is 59.8ohms and no shorts to ground. Stator resistance is 0.9 (L1-L2), and 0.9 (R1-R2) and no shorts coil to coil or coil to ground. The slip rings look okay and the brushes do have a slight ridge but aren't worn out and make okay contact. I suspect the AVR is Blown but does anybody have any advice of other things to check?
Hi all! New to this reddit, seeking advice here! I have an old compressor here, Sil air from 1993.
Ive used it sparingly over the years. Painting both pictures and models with it. I did a short testrun about a year or two ago, and it seemed to work.
I now pulled it out and tried to start it up for som painting again, however it seemes to have broken somehow?
Now when i switch on power the switchlight starts and the ”engine” sound/humming goes on, as it used to do. After about ten seconds of that the engine stops and goes silent. About a minute later the engine starts to humm and again for about ten seconds and then turns of. The light is on and the engine repeats this behaviour indefinetly however no actual compression is initiated. No flow no pressure anywhere. The machine has oil in it as you can see.
Ive been trying to read up on how these machines work and realise ive never switched the oil tho i dont think thats an issue here.
Some people talk about filters, but i cant identify any on this machine.
So, anybody got some educated guesses about whats going on? Any advice is really apreciated!🙏👌
