Possibly dumb question, but still gunna ask, lol (Starting with the pre-question lore)

I discovered reptiles as an interest at 12, and have been in love ever sense. Spent years trying to convince parents, and my stepdad finally caved for my 15th birthday. Got an adult crested gecko, who I named Waffle, and quickly became my world.

Unfortunately, Waffle passed a couple months ago. Still reeling, feels like there's a whole in my life, and the silence from the terrarium (which sits on my dresser) at night is deafening. He was my reading buddy, the judgmental glare when I sat on my floor doing something dumb, and the tiny weight tucked under the collar of my shirt while I read.

I can't handle this hole in my life, but I also don't want to replace him. I've been heavily considering a gargoyle gecko, but part of me worries it'll be too similar.

After taking my very short list of alternative options (due to things like space constraints and my stepdad forbidding snakes) I pretty much have: Geckos.

Love geckos. They're adorable. But I want a gecko I can handle and bond with, not a decoration. So most species are off the table. And if I'm trying to consider non NC-geckoes... see the problem?

I remembered that tokay geckoes exist a few days ago, and that peeked my interest a bit. The idea of a gecko with more than one, occasional, braincell sounds like a fun change. Plus, as we all know, tokays are gorgeous.

Main problem? Handling. I know they have reputation for being angry little hellions that bite like if chip clips were built on steroids and wrath. (Dramatic, I'm aware. I like dramatic, lol.) But I've found a couple breeders and owners that say if you get a captive bread baby, and get the biting out their system young, they can actually be very handleable.

So, basically, my question is this:

Is it true that a captive bread, VERY well socialized baby tokay gecko, can become a buddy? Are they capable of being chill enough to hang out with? Or do they truly live up to the reputation of untamable gremlin?

(I'm aware that a tokay would likely never just chill on my shoulder while I read a book for two hours. I mean hang out as in holding, have outside the terrarium for periods of time, and not be constantly jumping/crazy)

I know it's probably a long shot, and I'll most likely end up getting a gargoyle once I can look at the terrarium without breaking down. But figured the question was worth asking, if for nothing more than curiosity, and to say I considered all the options.

Today I got one of my dream geckos — a Tokay 🥹😍 I think it’s a female, am I correct? Also, read below for more details!

I am sooo excited to finally add a Tokay gecko to my little home zoo 😇 I’m an experienced reptile owner of about 10 years now — I have 4 leopard geckos, 2 madagascar day geckos, and one chinese cave gecko. I’ve also taken care of some snakes over the summer in the past.

I’ve wanted a Tokay for years now and I finally found this pretty girl (?) at my local small-business pet store. She was surrendered along with almost 20 other reptiles that were neglected, including 5 cresties without their tails! 🥲 Apparently all the reptiles’ tanks including hers were in very poor condition, but she seems to be in pretty good shape considering the circumstances. Her age is estimated to be around 2 years old, but obviously this may not be accurate.

I’d love any advice regarding the sex, age, how healthy she/he looks, and anything else that would be helpful when dealing with a surrendered Tokay! :)

I got this tokay at a reptile convention.

Not even a week ago I went to a reptile convention and bought a tokay. I asked about how thin he was and the guy at the booth said it was because he was young. I couldn’t get the tokay to eat with me present but when I counted bugs some were missing so that seemed good. I’m not sure if he was drinking water but I had 2 bowls and misted 3 times a day. I really didn’t want to stress him out. But this morning I woke up and he was dead at the bottom of his enclosure. I’m not really sure if I did anything wrong or if he was unhealthy. I did do research but that was mostly for housing, care, and diet. I didn’t look much into what to look for in health. Humidity was around 70-80 and temps were good.

Does my female look gravid?

My male and female have been together for just over a month, They’re been getting on really well, not seen any copulation myself but I know they’re quite secretive!

She’s rather round at the moment! Not sure if she’s just putting on timber or if she’s gravid?

Not the smartest tool in the shed… I’ve never once gotten a video of her eating from my hand lol. I think she does this on purpose because she refuses to admit she’s getting tamed.

For context, she has never once gaped at me or barked/bit me. Shes just stupid at times lol. This is the second time she’s bit my finger instead of the treat :)

Worth it??

About to pull the trigger on this pied tokay for $2500. I’ve never seen a color like this but would love to get a consensus! Thanks!

I was lucky enough to get a patternless female Tokay from a guy who prefers to sell Tokay Geckos that have good personalities, or seem ramble. She's a bit flighty, but she hasn't been aggressive , I was able to handle her pretty quickly, and although she tried running a few times and I had to retrieve her , I always made sure to not pick her up from above and to kind of scoop her or coax her onto my palm.

She hasn't tried to bite at all, and she calmed down after a while of me holding her , unless something Spooks her and then she tries to run. Add a few points when I was handling her she was waving her tail defensively , at a couple points I just lightly touched her tail when I made sure she wouldn't freak out , not grasping it at all and just hoping to show her that I'm not a predator.

I really want to be able to build a good trust with her , I already love her so much , I own a male tokay that was a rehome but the previous owner never had a chance to tame him down , so he's very defensive. Honestly if I'm able to handle the female regularly and have her feel calm while she's with me I'd be more than happy to work for that .

So I'd love to hear any advice or tips anyone can provide. I've heard Target Training can work for a tokay , I'd certainly love to know more if anyone has advice on that as well!

Help with increasing water

Went for a check-up today for my Chamoy and mild lethargy (from stress after medicating him with calcium) and my vet said he was dehydrated... I spray his enclosure 3x a day and have a water bowl full, so I don't know what more to do for him.

The vet said to shoot water down his mouth, but most the time now he runs when I open his enclosure and the stress has been affecting his health this last month.

Currently, I'm spraying him directly as much as I can before he runs but I wanted to see if anyone knew something else that worked. He won't lick up much on him.
