Hi everyone! I'm Spring Thong (Nguyễn Xuân Thông), and I've been working on NXT Retro Music, a music app for the TrimUI Brick Pro.

I wanted my handheld to feel like a little dedicated music player that I could make my own: different player designs, my own wallpaper and avatar, music for my mood, and controls that make sense on physical buttons.

The part I'm most excited about is personalization:

• 36 player themes, including cassette, Walkman, reel-to-reel, MiniDisc, turntable, CRT and softer modern styles. The Original NXT player also keeps your wallpaper visible, with an album-cover or spinning-vinyl view.
• Separate listener profiles with their own appearance, favorites, playlists, listening history and statistics.
• 300 icons and 180 3D emoji, plus your own initials or a photo for your avatar. The avatar also appears in the startup profile chooser.
• A quick mood, genre and country check-in when entering the app, feeding the For you page with local listening suggestions and ways to discover tracks/playlists on Spotify and SoundCloud.
• LED colors and effects that change immediately, plus selectable spectrum styles and color palettes.

It is also a full music player:

• Local music: FLAC, WAV, MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus and M4A, including ALAC; browse folders, artists and albums, search/sort, manage the queue, save playlists and resume listening.
• Spotify Premium playback with QR/code pairing, eligible public SoundCloud tracks/playlists, public Google Drive music links, internet radio, podcasts and YouTube music downloads.
• 12 EQ presets, a simple five-band custom EQ and advanced DSP/parametric EQ controls, with ReplayGain and track-transition options.
• Bluetooth and compatible USB DAC output, with source-quality information kept separate from the actual output/PCM information.
• Full-screen lyrics when lyrics are available, shuffle, repeat, favorites, background playback and remappable button shortcuts.
• Wi-Fi file transfer from a phone or computer browser, so adding music does not require removing the SD card each time.
• 14 interface languages with matching on-screen keyboards, searchable settings and in-app help.
• Separate Stock and NextUI installers, plus in-app OTA updates when a matching release source is configured.

New in v1.8.3: the sleep timer saves your position/settings, stops playback and fully exits the app, including a background session. The firmware then handles screen-off and sleep according to its own settings. It does not force an instant deep sleep.

There are Battery saver, Balanced and Performance modes for the visuals, and the app skips interface/spectrum rendering while hidden or with the screen off. I am focusing on responsive controls and avoiding unnecessary work; I do not have a measured battery-life or temperature comparison to claim.

Why use it instead of the bundled Music app?

For me, the appeal is having a much more personal listening space and putting local music, online sources, EQ/output controls, lyrics and file transfer into one organized app. You do not need to replace your firmware to use the Stock build.

This project builds on the community NextUI Music Player foundation. Credit to its original authors and maintainers for the playback, radio, podcast and download foundations — those deserve recognition too.

The images are native UI previews with demo track/profile/audio data. I'm also recording a hands-on video on the actual device.

I've written a version of the Chinese game Go for the Brick and Brick Hammer. The Github repo is here: https://github.com/kodabey/NextUI-Stones-Pak/releases/tag/v1.0 . I was frustrated that it's so hard to find a good game of Go on most devices. This one will go all the way up to AlphaGo level of difficulty where it thinks for a minute or more before moving, but Brook is pretty easy yet still challenging. Please enjoy it!

Hello! First of all, thanks to all the people that helped me to choose this model in my last post, I ordered this one from the Ampown Store from Amazon which was by far the cheapest option for my country, even cheaper than AliExpress.

However the box arrived without any tape at the top part, so I could open it without even removing the tape at the bottom, should I be worried? Or what should I check to see if it was tampered?

Btw I got a microsd from somewhere else and I'm planning to install the Next UI firmware, is it the best one to play GBA games or is there a better one? Thanks!

- Metronome: From 2/4 to 12/8 time signatures, with subdivision for eighth, sixteenth, and triplet notes. BPM control using the two analog sticks.

felt that lists were a little bit boring and i didnt like that games were separated by platforms so had the clanker vibecode it for me. Used steamgriddb for icons manually. Happy as hell and i think it looks good. Would be great if something like this could be implemented officially

Every other player on this handheld gives something up. Some cap the output at 44.1 kHz or 16-bit, others resample everything to 48 kHz. The side buttons cannot turn a USB DAC up or down. Playback stutters, skips, or jumps to the next song. And the screen has to stay on for the music to keep going, which empties the battery.

Truepod fixes all of that:

• Full quality. It plays the file at its own sample rate and bit depth, and tells you when it could not.
• The side buttons control the DAC. The volume keys work on several DAC

Hello, everyone.

I'm venting here and posting my frustration as a last resort for in case anyone else can chime in with their inputs, because I've tried everything to recover my Brick, and it has become an actual Brick that only heats up while not responding at all.

I had NextUI installed on it, played some Tetris DX (GBC) on it, then put it to sleep mode and in my bag. It was only when I reached home that I found out that it was unresponsive and heating up, so the feared limbo bug. The only difference in my case being: it's unresponsive no matter what, even after pressing and holding the power, volume down, and restart buttons all at once.

I flashed the recovery image from v1.1.1-20251126, and from the first release v1.0.5 20241105 too. I flashed these on two 16 GB microSD cards (one Intenso U1 card, one Samsung Evo+ U1 card), to account for >32 GB cards possibly not working well with the recovery image, and I even tried recovering it with a 256 GB SanDisk V30 card, right down to flashing Knulli on the 256 GB card and inserting it into my Brick, in the hope that it would somehow boot up and install any CFW possible.

Unfortunately, none of the recovery attempts worked. Whenever I charge the device and try to switch it on with the volume up/down + power button pressed and held, sometimes even the restart button with the other two buttons, with the recovery image card inserted, the device's display doesn't turn on. It merely heats up while staying unresponsive.

I cannot express the helplessness and frustration I'm feeling since the past 3-4 weeks my device is bricked. I only found the time to type this post now. I'm at my wit's end over what the heck else I can do. If anyone chimes in with their inputs, your advice will be immensely appreciated. Thank you.

I loved this UI on my old bright green Windows Phone so I wanted to give it a go on my new Brick Hammer.

Some parts of the interface feel awkward with a d-pad but overall it works surprisingly well.

This is a personal fork of NextUI, built with Claude based on a bunch of Figma screens.

I bought a Brick Pro recently and I love it, but the thumbsticks poking out make it awkward to store or throw into a backpack. I still use them—well, the left one at least—so I didn’t want to go with the stick delete mod.

Instead, I designed a 3D-printable clip-on cover to protect the screen and shield the thumbsticks while keeping them fitted.
