Spend some time yesterday helping this lovely creature across a road and hopefully to the safe pond they call home.

Very Large Snapping Turtle

Spotted in the Mattabesset River in Connecticut. I estimate she was at least 4ft long head to tail. I wonder how old she is.

How do you know if you're overfeeding your turtle?

I probably average a feeding every 1.5 days. The size of the feeding can vary. I don't really have a defined quantity. Lately, I've been giving him/her an entire leaf of a romaine lettuce.

He/she's shell length is probably around 6"

Maybe another question is how do I know if I'm underfeeding him? My turtle will eat 24/7 if i keep feeding him. ...

Worried hope needed

I never wanted to be one of these posts, but unfortunately, due to some cat food getting knocked into the turtle pen, the dogs dug a hole to get the food, and now my beloved Darwin has been missing since Wednesday afternoon

He is my Central American wood turtle rescue he is missing a back foot

He is not native to Ga and would not survive winter, but I just hope he makes it back home

I want to believe he is in the little forest strip in the neighbors yard, but it’s been soul crushing to be out of town and helpless

I know sometimes they can make it back, and my family has just gone out and got live animal traps but any extra storys of success would be welcome

Red is 4 today!

Our southern painted turtle, Red, turned 4 today. We're obviously shedding scutes but do we look ok otherwise? When he was smaller I was sure he was a he, but now I think I was wrong, opinons?

I didn't want to disturb basking too much today but I'll be inspecting cloaca and plastron tomorrow, but shell dome height, nails and what I can see of the tail look female to me.

I was a bit concerned about some eye rubbing about 3 weeks ago. I have gone heavy on vitamin A rich foods since and have not seen any continued or new signs or symptoms of anything beyond day 4.

We installed a new basking set-up 2 weeks ago and had a heatwave that necessitated AC and I stupidly forgot to spot check basking temp with the new set-up and ambient temp change. I attributed the hesitancy to bask to the new space but it was actually way too cool at only 79.8°. This was less than 5 min after I put the new bulb in, back at a happy 85-95° gradient.

Tank is a full 75g, sand substrate, seiryu stone, driftwood and random floating clumps of windelov Java fern (because sassy pants doesnt eat them but cuts the stem of every leaf at the rhyzome if I attach it anywhere), 2 PP Cascade cannister filters, 2 24" T5 UVB (one at recommended height over 24" over tank basking and one lower over fabric screen covered open water) and live pothos where it cant be accessed but is still sucking out nitrates.

Diet is daily greens (typically mustard, dandelion, collard, anacharis, red root floaters), carrot a few times a week, pellets 2/week and live calcium dusted insects (typically a few small crickets or a medium dubia) 1/week. Not enough or too much of anything?

Steve - Red Eared Slider

This is Steve. She will be 20 this year in Summer. She was named for Steve Irwin who had passed around that time. Then she got bigger (a lot!) and laid eggs but she's still Steve because she comes when you call her name. She also hand feeds nicely.

Today Steve finished the rest of her shed. She was basking as her tank was being attended to and she became a nice dry turtle.. then a peeling turtle. It was mostly her plastron except for one questionable (literally) piece on the carapace.

She has a question (mark) it would seem on her butt end that remains after shedding. Wish I knew how to answer her question. What do you think she's asking?

Steve says Have a Turtle-riffic Day!

A CB common snapping turtle showing perfectly straight front claws during its juvenile stage, just like some wild adults. Does anyone know why this happens?

Advise for housing a new tank mate.

So ive currently got a female yellow bellied slider and intend on housing her with a new friend her later this year. My question is would it be better for her mate to he a female or a male. My wife wants a painted turtle which means they won't be able to produce children. Should we get another tank and expand our turtle collection or is it fine to house two females in the same tank or would give her a proper mate be better. All advise is welcome.

Getting a baby red slider this weekend…

Hey everyone,

Apparently a girlfriend’s friend is giving up on her baby turtle and we are taking it.

I am a pretty good critter parent and I like to think I can provide a good environment for my critters.

So as far as this turtle is coming with, he’s got like a 2 gallon he’s been living in.

I plan on building him a 2x4 pond that’s closer to 100+ gallons of water on my patio.

putting him in my paludarium until I have that done. What y’all think?

Beak Healing Advice

Hello! I am here to ask you fine turtle lovers for some advice on this map turtle's beak.

Background
This turtle had a new rock introduced into his habitat and shortly after this he had a large broken section of his lower beak chipped. He has always been in an enclosure. It was advised that he should recover as long as the turtle kept eating. It has been a few months since this injury, and he is always happy to eat when it is feeding time! Food includes medley of pellets, dried shrimp, dried worms, and dried berries. I have read that harder food may need to be introduced into the diet that would be more abrasive to help with beak health. The UVB bulb was ~6-8months old when it just recently burnt out and replaced. He is around 7 or 8 years old.

Question
Does it seem like the beak is healing properly? The sections where the upper beak overlaps the lower beak on the corners of the mouth have been a concern.

Thanks for any help!🐢❤️

What’s up with the water?

I got a new 75 gal tank for my new RES along with a new fluval 407 filter. The water seems to be sprinkled with white specks all over and it seems to be more everyday. He has been in there for a little under a month and am wondering what it is. The filter does a great job at leaning out any poop or other debris but not this stuff. I was wondering if it’s shed because some pieces look like flakes and others just look like small white dots. What could it be and should I clean out 50% of the water?

PS. My turtle is ~ 2.5 inches, I have UVB, UVA, basking spots, and water heaters for it.

Is the brightness of light in basking area as important as proper temp?

I have this fixture with a thermostat which allows me to keep a steady temperature for my Map turtle hatchling basking area.

However I notice sometimes that bulb will be dim to maintain temperature when he's basking. I have a separater UVB light so I'm not worried about that aspect.

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you
