Asking for help IDing uniform or soldier records.
Ie rank, time period, etc.

His name was Frederick Sommer, catholic, soldier. His daughter came over with this picture in 1887/88 about 19yo, and I know she has a sister. Birth dates are 1869 and 1871 of these daughters.

His wife was named Fredericke Freida Eva Adler. I don’t believe either of them left Germany.

Are other subs or databases better for asking help concerning military service dates etc?

Soem Kepis, especially the Kepis that were used by the US forces during the US civil war, had its bented front part towards the outside.

What is the exact origin of this?

Hello! I just got an excellent condition of Carabinieri tunic. Theres a question follow from this tunic too. Which unit is fit to the shield thing on the upper left pocket?(right upper pocket in the photo) Also. Theres another brooch(?) next to the shield. Could you please id them for me?

It reminds me a lot of the Nuanmao hats that civilian Quing officials of the time wore. But I've never seen pictures of a military version.

It kinda looks like a modified Kepi rather than a regular Kepi.

At least for me, it looks like a hat that was mixed with a Peaked cap and Kepi.

In terms of the overall design, it has a circular design of a Kepi.

However, on the front, it has a black visor like a Peaked cap.

Even, the overall size, it does not really big as much as the French style Kepi.

So, did the the IJA modify?

Until the 19th century, the Royal Gaurds got the standard uniform from the Armed Forces.

However, it started to resist this in the late 19th century and froze in 1902.

I choose 1902 as the year when the Royal Guards were frozen in time because it was the year when the Dark Khaki Uniform was intorduced for the Home Service. This introduction officially retired the iconic Red tunics.

Therefore, what is this 19th century obsession?

This is a photo of the US Navy Salvage Diver School that was established in 1942 at Pier 88 in NYC, on the site of the capsized USS Lafayette (formerly SS Normandie), which is quite a story itself.

Though the two men up on the balcony standing to the right are obviously US Navy personnel, I'm having difficulty identifying the group of men standing to their right. Their uniforms look a little like Soviet to me, based on the single row of buttons and epaulets. Opinions welcome.
