Help with recording

Hello, so I recorded a little acoustic progression a few days ago and wanted to add some lap steel…
Today I tried to do that and nothing. I could hear everything but nothing was recording into Logic.
Obviously I am doing something wrong somewhere in the chain.
It was as follows.
Amp>Ox Box>S/PDIF>Apollo Twin X>Logic.

I was monitoring through the Apollo. I did go into UA console to make sure it had S/PDIF as input…

any help is appreciated!

Thunderbolt 2 Apollo 8p needs a new system

I've been running an old 2016 Macbook pro with pro tools for way too long and I need to upgrade and swap to ableton live. Whats the best system that still supports thunderbolt 2/3? From what I've seen its only the M1 or older intel cpus/mobos that are less stable. Is there a solution rather than swapping out 2 whole cards for newer thunderbolt to work with newer systems? I only have newer AMD systems so eitherway I'm still stuck with a hardware change.

0 latency monitoring is a lie

Yeah this is not 0 latency I'm monitoring from ua Apollo USB with just autotune and their slight latency very disappointed. It only happens when I turn on the autotune dry it's fine.

Anyone on Linux?

I just switched from windows to CachyOS and I’m wondering if anyone has been able to make an Apollo twin x usb work on a Linux system? I really don’t wanna switch back to windows but this will be a dealbreaker for Linux 😂

Console Help

Hello all. UA’s AI screwed up my entire routing in the Console. I need someone who is down for a video call with me on messenger or what’s app or something. AI runs me in circles and opens I’m given for email support isn’t concluding my issues.

Expanding x6 To Additional Channels.

Hello all! So I'm wanting to expand my outputs on my interface to 16 additional channels. I'm currently running an Apollo x6 and Logic Pro.

I recently got two Arturia Audiofuse X8 Out interface expanders. I have connected both ADAT outputs to the expanders and I have all 16 channels connected directly into my mixer via snake cables. I'm unsure of where to go from here as I'm confused on how to work the console a bit and I'm not seemingly finding videos to help me out on this. Is there anybody who could help me on this? So theoretically, I am looking to have the 16 channels go to my mixer and then bring it all back through my input on the interface. Hoping to run multiple channels out into my mixer and bring it back as one. Drums, would be a prime example of sending out 6 channels and bring it back as one recording track?

Maybe I'm not understanding this fully. The Console seems to be a little confusing at this point of adding so many additional channels. Doesn’t anybody have experience with the interface, console and Logic that could help me?

Is there any difference in sound between Apollo Twin X and Focusrite Scarlett solo 4th gen?

Hey all,

Thinking of purchasing the UAD Apollo Twin X Quad Gen 2, as I want to upgrade my sound and be able to record through the unison preamps. I currently use a Focusrite Scarlett solo 4th gen and the Shure SM7db, running it into my M1 MacBook Air and using Logic Pro as my DAW of choice.

I make a variety of music including emo rap, melodic rap, boom bap, rage rap, pop, R&B, emotional singing, and more. I use beats from YouTube or BeatStars, and I mainly record vocals, and occasionally electric guitar or acoustic guitar.

What would the sound quality difference be when comparing these two setups? I’m in an untreated bedroom, and the SM7db is really good at rejecting the acoustics of my room and some of the background noise, especially when paired with the Waves NS1 noise suppressor. Will there be any noticeable difference? Do I also gain anything that I don’t have with my current setup?

Thanks in advance 🙏

Monitoring in console recording in logic before the beat.

I’m experiencing some sort of latency problem, but it’s early instead of late. When recording into Logic Pro, and monitoring in console, the playback of the track recorded is a little before the click. What could be the problem? I’ve searched and tried so many things, can’t seem to find a solution.

Scrolling thru presets w/ UAD Waterfall got me a 300 db blast

i was running a pre-recorded and processed DI guitar track through the UAD Waterfall native plug and was graced with a 300 db blast when I hit the ‘hurricane’ preset. i also noticed when scrolling sounds that I would get other volume jumps in between. I was also using the ‘gospel’ and other presets similarly w/o issue, but stopped using presets entirely after that. With the way I work, if I can’t scroll through plugin presets before making manual adjustments, I would just prefer a leslie simulator hardware that operates at line level… having a library of usable sounds per instrument is the main appeal of plugins for me.

I’m using the latest version of Reaper. The track in question is a lead guitar stereo track previously processed with some compression and an Eventide Harmonizer and delay, all rendered onto the single stereo track. There was an Airwindows high frequency limiting plugin active on the guitar bus to warm up the guitars a hair. The peaks might go as high -8 or so when it’s most prominent, but this part was for more of a background pad effect on a quieter part of the song. The Waterfall plugin was applied to a particular Reaper media item at that section, not the entire track.

Volume jumps are to be expected w/ the realties of gain staging, but this one seems particularly insane and dangerous. I’d at least like to be able to edit or remove the offending preset, but wasn’t able to, and I don’t think that would solve the issue w/ the volume jumps in between.

Anyone have similar issues? I like the sound of UAD plugins, and apart from being inherent CPU hogs (or the odd iLok crash), I don’t typically have issues with them, which is why I’m writing here. Thanks in advance.

Apollo twin X question

I'm about to get back into music. Got a twin X and am looking to pair it with either sm7b or at4040. Mics i've used:

Aston spirit- Don't like the high end harshness and doesn't fit my voice at all.

at2020- Was better for my voice, but can definitely tell the quality difference between more midrange ones.

SM7b- Very good for my vocals, like the highs and the lows and voice sat in the mix perfectly. Biggest negative was some of the inherent dullness needing to be mixed out.

Very in between sm7b and at4040 as sm7b was my fav, but if the at4040 can beat it with the clarity and no extra harshness (some is inherent) I'd love the modern sound of a condenser.

I made a free menu bar app so Mac's Volume Keys control your UAD Console volume

I built a small, free macOS menu bar app to use your normal Volume Keys.
When UAD Console is running and your Apollo is selected as your system output, F10/F11/F12 take over the UAD Console monitor volume (mute/down/up) instead. Switch to a different setup and everything goes right back to normal system volume, automatically!

A few other things it does:

  • Custom shortcuts: map any key combo to mute/solo individual input channels, Talkback, Dim, or Mono
  • Choose whether it's active system-wide, or only when specific apps (your DAW, for example) are in the foreground
  • On-screen volume feedback, like the native macOS HUD
  • Works in English, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese
  • Universal binary (Intel + Apple Silicon), macOS 13+

You can download it here :)

Completely free, no ads, no tracking. Not affiliated with Universal Audio — just something I built for my own setup that I figured others might want too.

Newbie Volt/LUNA . cannot hear anything throug the computer speakers

I did get volt and Luna working decently welll with long AI chats. The output, using headphones connected to volt did sound terrible. So I wanted to check how the sound is just using the laptop speakers. I did disconnect Volt from the usb and did restart my laptop(to make sure no other programs uses the speakers).
*
But playing a projekt I hear nothing. I have been fiddling around with the asio4all thing and there is a red cross at Realtek output with HAP. From what I understand from AI the icon there is supposed to be blue. I see a red cross and hovering something about another program locking. But I did just restart the laptop.

How to proceed?

What do you think of my chain?

I am not a Pro or a sound engineer, but I love Sound to the point that I keep learning and growing in it.

On the other hand, I am a professional voice-over artist for narrative documentaries, corporate voice-overs, and TV/radio commercials. I’m also self-taught when it comes to sound mixing.

So, I wanted to share my vocal chain and get your thoughts on it.

Keep in mind that this is not really a vocal chain for songs. Also, I don’t really see the need for using buses in this specific case, but I’m willing to learn if/where they would actually be needed.

(If you see “optional,” it means it’s not always required.)

- Cleaning (Repair, Restore, etc.)
- EQ (Corrective)
- De-Esser
- EQ (Tonal EQ)
- 1st Compressor (a fast comp like an 1176)
- 2nd Compressor (a slower comp like an LA-2A) — Optional
- Tonal EQ (a colored plugin like Analog Obsession SSQ, API 550A, etc.)
-Tonal EQ (adding warmth using a Pultec-style plugin) Optional
- Saturation (Like Klanghelm IVGI)
- Reverb (a small amount of room reverb)
- Limiter
- VU Meter for loudness

I’d really appreciate any feedback. I’m mainly interested in whether the order makes sense and if there’s anything unnecessary or missing.

P.S: None of the plugins mentioned are sponsored or commissioned. There popular ones that could have been mentioned but I choose some free ones for examples.

Apollo Solo thunderbolt and pc

I have an Apollo solo thunderbolt and just started buying parts to build a PC. I bought an AMD Ryzen 7700x processor and later found out it’s not compatible.Does anyone know if I’d be able to make it work in this system or if anyone uses it on this cpu or any AMD processor I’m not sure if the motherboard makes a difference in this situation but I was looking at the gigabyte x870 WiFi6 with a USB4 port. Do you think this will work or I should return my processor and get a different one?

Apollo Twin X Gen 2 heat clacking noises from the chassis.

I have an Apollo Twin X gen 2 for 8 months and, for the past two weeks, it's been making a "clacking" noise coming from the hardware during the first 30 minutes after it's turned on and again for the next 30 minutes after it's turned off.

I noticed it's not the sound of the relays because I don't change settings like the sample rate or clock speed, and the noises appear randomly even when I'm not using the Apollo (it's turned on).

I realized the noise occurs if I press with my fingers just below the center knob (on the talkback mic), and after pressing it, the noise stops (as if something inside is settling into place) until I turn the Apollo off and it cools down, then the noise returns.

Aside from that, the Apollo works correctly; it doesn't have any digital noise or unexpected disconnections, but those noises are annoying, considering the price of their interfaces, I expect a certain level of build quality.

I've attached a video of me pressing the interface with my finger in a comment. I don't know if I can attach more videos, but it makes the exact same noise during the first 30 minutes after turning it on and the first 30 minutes after turning it off (without pressing with my finger).
