Most (all?) UV town Listservs shutting down 8/21/26

Quite the surprise, and very soon. This area kind of runs on these, and I'm interested to know why Vital Communities decided to do this with just two days notice.

PLEASE READ - Important update on town-based listservs From: vitalcommunities.org

Dear subscribers of the (town) Listserv,

We are writing to let you know that Vital Communities will be sunsetting all of the town-based community listservs, including this one, later this week. No further posts will be accepted to the (town) Listserv after 8pm on Friday, 8/21. Vital Communities will continue to operate the Upper Valley-wide and topic-specific lists.

There is an opportunity to continue town-based community connection online, without gaps, through Vermont-based Front Porch Forum. We will share more information on that option below, including how to join your local forum.

The listservs were created several decades ago to build connections and share opportunities, questions, and resources at the community level. The objectives for the lists have not changed over the years, but the environment in which the listservs operate has evolved significantly.

Over the last few months, Vital Communities has reflected on whether there are adaptations we could make to the listservs to meet the current environment with our available resources. Ultimately, we have realized that the town-based listservs have outgrown the level of support and expertise that Vital Communities can provide. It is time for Vital Communities to step back and recognize that there are now other entities with the right expertise, experience, and resources that provide these services in the Upper Valley, and that will give the listservs space to continue growing, thriving, and evolving.

Critically, Front Porch Forum, a Vermont -based public benefit company with a mission to help neighbors connect and build community, already offers their forums (listservs to us) across the entire Upper Valley region - now including all New Hampshire Upper Valley towns. Front Porch Forum is ready to pick up the thread of connection and conversation from the listservs, and to welcome subscribers and communities at https://frontporchforum.com. They also offer town-by-town community calendars and business directories that are networked together to give both a local and a regional view.

If you are not already familiar with Front Porch Forum, you can learn more about it and sign up for a free account at frontporchforum.com We are excited about the continuity that Front Porch Forum offers and encourage listserv subscribers to explore their town-based forums.

One important note: Vital Communities is not going to move our town-based subscriber lists to Front Porch Forum automatically. Each subscriber will need to sign themselves up for a Front Porch Forum account at frontporchforum.com. There is an online help center at help.frontporchforum.com with support from real people if you have questions or challenges signing up. Vital Communities is also here to provide support with the changes ahead.

We offer huge thanks to the current and past list managers for their many years of volunteer service connecting and supporting your community through celebrations, challenges, and transitions. This listserv would not have been possible without their collective support.

What is your experience moving from a large metro area here?

Hello all, We are a married couple in our 30s and exploring the possibility of moving from NYC metro area to Lebanon area - including also Grantham, Enfield, Etna. We are past the life stage of seeking out nightlife scenes. One of us work remotely and the other is working on a startup. Would love to have a few acres of land. This is also an opportunity to get closer to family in the upper valley. Wondering if you can share recommended areas and pros/cons? We are looking at under $900k ideally $650-$750k range. We don’t have kids yet though that’s a possibility. Also wondering what the local activity community and intellectual scenes are like, e.g. Dartmouth events/lectures/courses open to community? Thanks!

What is this boundary line within the town of Hartford?

The blue line is the town boundary of Hartford. But what is the interior blue boundary line just north of the word "Quechee" on the map? This is from the Zillow website but it is not a question about real estate. It's not a boundary of QLLA, you can see the ski area is outside that line.

Kids swim instructor recommendations

Hi! We are moving to Norwich this month, and I would like to sign my 6 year old son up for private swim lessons. He's been working with a swim coach for the last year and has gained a lot of skills and confidence with the one-on-one instruction. I'd like to find him someone similar in the Upper Valley because he's really enjoyed it. He's not quite ready for swim team, but that might be something we explore in the future. I plan on getting us a membership at the UV Aquatic Center, so someone who teaches there would be great! Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

How To Use A TV Antenna In VT & NH

First make sure you go to https://www.rabbitears.info/searchmap.php and search for your address.

Anything labeled as Fair or Good can be picked up with an indoor antenna most of the time. If you have any poor signals then an outdoor antenna on your roof is likely needed. For anything labeled as bad you don’t have a high chance but you could catch the signals from knife edge diffraction which is a very precise engineering setup.

If you are using an indoor antenna I highly recommend using one with an amplifier. I don’t have a favorite indoor antenna but just don’t use those flat paper thin ones or use ones that promise over 100 miles. It’s all marketing crap.

If you are using an antenna outside I highly recommend the DB8E antenna paired with an amplifier. You could also try a Yagi antenna but those can only be aimed in one direction. DB8E has worked better for me in our terrain here.

Outdoor antenna suggestion https://store.antennasdirect.com/DB8e-Outdoor-DTV-Antenna.html

Outdoor/Indoor Amplifier suggestion make sure you buy the outdoor model if you are using it outside. https://www.kitztech.com/kt500.html

Also I highly suggest you buy a OBTV filter for your antenna it blocks all unwanted signals. Please make sure to install this before the amp or it will not work. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5T9NDL3?lv=shuf&channelId=500&plpRedirect=mhFallback

If you don’t have some of the local big networks you want in your area like CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, and PBS you can always email the general manager of the station to show interest in there station and see if they will build a translator station near you. WCAX and PBS are amazing at doing this.

WCAX Contact: jay.barton@wcax.com

WPTZ Contact: wptzengineering@hearst.com (There link to the general manager email does not work right now).

WFFF/WVNY Contact: tcastano@mychamplainvalley.com

PBS VT Contact: hello@vermontpublic.org

PBS NH Contact: ddeangelis@nhpbs.org

I am going to share some high population areas of VT TV channel lists if you use a DB8E Antenna with an AMP on your roof. These are the signals that come to your town as good enough to watch.

Also please remember that in 2009 analog TV shutdown in most areas. So TV antenna signals have moved on to digital so they are no longer fuzzy, have static, and look a lot more like cable in quality. If a channel is broadcasting a HD channel it will most of the time look better the cable even if compressed because this is the master feed and raw feed of the channel. Sub channels are usually in SD but still look very good.

Lynx in Orange County

I went home for lunch between jobs and yikes, I find this momma lynx encircling my chicken run. The cat was HUGE. Very concerning. If anyone else has chickens I’d suggest keeping a sidearm close by. This was 2pm in the heat in the middle of the day.

Long term hotels

I live with my dad in white river junction and I need space. I make about 2 grand a month and just need my own little space but I have too much anxiety and bad experience with roommates I rather just pay for one near by. Preferably on a bus route.

Job Openings?

My seasonal job ended, and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for short-term jobs to tide me over until I find my next position. I'm located in Lebanon but willing to commute within the Upper Valley.

Volunteer opportunities

I’m in the Hanover area during the week (M-Th) and was wondering if there were any places looking for volunteers. All of the lists I can find online are way out of date. I’m free every evening. TIA
