Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Cross walk across from Cafe Nouveau

I walk across the crosswalk on Chrisman Ave and E Thompson across from cafe nouveau often and I have almost been hit probably 4 times in the last 2 months. I’m finding it’s just getting worse and worse. Despite their being flashing beacons, cars just don’t stop. I should also note that, after pushing the button to start the flashing beacons, I always wait on the sidewalk until cars come to a stop, but sometimes there will be a car further down the road that doesn’t come to a stop by the time I’m already walking. I also notice that sometimes when I’m waiting on the sidewalk after pushing the button, cars just don’t see me waiting and keep zooming by for minutes on end. There has been multiple times where cars zoom by maybe 2 feet in front of me while I’m already in the middle of the crosswalk. Last week I had a woman stop her car and roll down her window to apologize on behalf of a driver that nearly hit me. I’ve had cars stop and honk at other cars who didn’t stop and almost hit me. Has anyone else noticed this??

UPDATE: this morning I pushed the flashing button and waited until cars came to a full stop before crossing. One car noticed cars were stopping and instead of going through, he stopped sort of abruptly and the car behind him had to break suddenly and honked at him. The man who stopped smiled and put his hand up to apologize for almost zooming through, I smiled, and then went ahead and started crossing. I was annoyed at the car that honked at him to let a person cross, but understood that he was probably annoyed the person in front of him braked suddenly. I assume the driver who honked thought that I crossed without looking, making the man in front of him break quickly, and he rolled down his window and had the audacity to wave his finger and shake his head at me for crossing the sidewalk?? The entitlement is insane I was so pissed off and yelled at him “for what???”. I will not be crossing this sidewalk anymore and will choose to cross the one with the light further down the street.

OVER PRESCRIBING MEDS

Has anyone been treated by Dr. Ted Darden in Thousand Oaks?
I’m specifically looking to hear from former patients or their family members about their experiences with his prescribing practices.
My concern involves the number and types of medications being prescribed, including medications commonly associated with pain management and/or psychiatric treatment. I understand that a family medicine physician can legally prescribe many of these medications, but I’m concerned about whether the prescribing and monitoring were appropriate, particularly given that his specialty is family medicine rather than pain management or psychiatry.
I’m not trying to make assumptions or accusations — I’m hoping to find out whether anyone else has had similar concerns or experiences with this physician.
If you aren’t comfortable commenting publicly, you’re welcome to message me privately.

anyone remember the tuna boat at the harbor?

years ago a tuna boat, the Ventura II, would make a few stops a year at the harbor and sell fresh tuna and other fish right off the docks. that fish was so good. don't know what happened to it but I do sometimes hope another tuna fisherman would pickup where they left off. seeing if anyone else remembers it or if anyone knows of anything similar not too far away.

Any place for cheap pizza?

Everyone one in a while I have teenagers to feed. I've been getting the $10 medium pizzas from Costco which do the job without breaking the bank. I'd like something closer, where I can call the order in and pick it up (apparently delivery isn't for us poors any more).

Any places I should look at? Quality isn't an issue, the pizza is in the stomach before the taste buds are engaged.

Has anyone else had a bad experience with the Taco Bell across Ventura High School?

Last time I was there I swear I must have waited like 10 minutes in the drive thru, I might as well have gone to a real Mexican restaurant if I have to wait that long. That wasn't the first time either, I remember going there before and waiting like 10 minutes in the drive thru, awful service.

Need some help.

Hello, friends I could use some advice / and help that can be given. TLDR at bottom.

My partner and I have been grinding day in and day out trying to get jobs (literally anything we can find) and we just cant seem to get anything. Both of us have physical and mental issues, but are able to function.

She (40's) currently waiting for her substitute teaching credentials to come through, has CRPS, a chronic pain disorder, and hasnt been truly been able to work for about 15 years, she was a badass manufacturing manager. She also has generalized anxiety and depression.

I'm a trans woman (36), have diabetes, generalized anxiety and depression and I am a photographer / videographer and been told im attractive enough to to model. Haven't worked for 2 years due to a mental breakdown and no longer being given work because Im trans.

We are currently have no money coming in with some savings, and we are needing to move to a lower rent area so that way when we can get jobs / careers going again we can easier pay.

We need potential safe but lower rent areas to move to and If ANYONE out there is able to help with a remote job for my partner, and anything for me, any photographers that could help me with headshots / photos that I can submit to an agency or anything to help me get ahead while hunting for jobs, please let me know. We really need it. Thank you in advance.

TLDR: Need to know about any safe / lower rent areas, my partner with chronic pain needs a remote job. I need any job and hopefully a photographer that is willing to help a girl out with some pictures or take me on as an assistant / apprentice.

Places with good bike parking?

It seems like so many markets, restaurants, shops, etc. have little or no bike parking (talking about midtown, downtown, westside, pierpont). We are fortunate to have such great climate, mostly flat terrain and even bike lanes, but businesses seem to go out of their way to NOT accommodate customers with bikes. I even see places with signs that say "No bikes inside" but they have no outside bike racks!

What are some places with safe and plentiful bike parking/racks?

Floor guy or company rec?

Hi everyone!

Our wood floors started buckling a lot over the last week. Does anyone have a recommendation of a good floor guy or floor company that can inspect/fix it?

Thanks in advance!

No more beating around the bush. Ventura Forward's Spencer Noren is corrupt.

Spencer Noren revealed last month he was hired in 2022 to help election campaigns for Measure E, Liz Campos and Bill McReynolds. Spencer created and shared over one dozen Instagram posts supporting the campaigns or calling an opponent a special interest. He did not disclose any campaign spending or financial compensation in those posts.

In addition to endorsing financial supporters, Spencer Noren uses his platform for extortion. He has been accused of blackmail by a City Council Member. He is now calling CAPS a special interest and attacking the non profit media organization for not supporting Ventura Forward events.

Real journalists are not allowed to behave like this. That is why he discredits real journalists. He regularly calls the VC Star a rag and recently called a high school journalist a snitch, scab and Larry for reporting on his own business activity.

His behavior may be supported by Tom Spence and Fox Sports but what about leaders seeking our votes? Four years later, noone can turn a blind eye to Spencer's lack of ethics. Is social media attention worth linking your campaign or business with a bully for hire?

I am worried Ventura Forward's upcoming political events will be more pay to play. There are real journalists who can moderate a fair debate including from our own high school newspapers.

Dating apps!

I don’t know if it’s me or anyone else, but I have noticed that now that I’m 40 I’m single have a great career. I’m healthy, I don’t have kids and I’ve never been married how difficult it is to meet people and especially when dating apps are your only option it sucks and I’m tired of people on these apps playing games getting your hopes up say that they wanna meet up and then ghost you like hours before meeting up and then you try to text them and they don’t respond and it’s like why did you do this? Why did you waste an individuals free time like time is precious and I don’t understand why people take advantage of that. It’s pretty sad. Tell me what you guys think are dating apps horrible I would agree.

Ventura fairgrounds can't be serious.

I just signed a petition to stop the building of an AI data center. I can't believe I had to even think about it happening in my own backyard.

Dave’s Dogs Closed?

Drove by today and both doors have “closed” written on them and they’re clearing out equipment. They just opened, does anyone know what happened?

I never went, but this crazy fast.
