Dating Locally without dating apps

29 M New to the area and looking to meet women locally to go out on fun dates, but not through dating apps.

I’m a Chef by profession and very adventurous, outdoorsy, with lots of hobbies - surfing, (spear)fishing, motorcycle riding, rock climbing, gym, gardening, photography, guitar, etc.

I hear meetup app might be a good place to meet people, but not too many groups in this area and gym doesn’t feel like the right place to talk to people. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Tarot 101-Free Lecture in Santa Paula

My previously scheduled lecture at The Flying Spoon was cancelled due to a small group of religious fanatics who threatened to boycott the restaurant for “encouraging the occult”. So out of spite, stubbornness, and a love for the freedom of speech, I’ve rescheduled the lecture to take place at the Blanchard Community Library, on Saturday, May 23rd. Classroom One. All are welcome to join.

Here’s the blurb:

“Free lecture at the Blanchard Community Library on the art and history of the Tarot cards. Saturday May 23rd in Classroom One.

For those that don't know me, I am a trial attorney by trade, with a background in literature and writing. I'm also on the Library Board, and an artist with a specialty in oils, acrylics, pastels, and hot rod repair. But I've studied the art, history, and the game of Tarot for over 29 years, and enjoy sharing the rich history of the cards with others.

Tarot has existed for over 600 years, since long before the Constitution, before America even existed, before the Mona Lisa was painted, before the Protestant revolution. The cards are about as old as the printing press, as both came about in the year 1440, and are the basis for the common poker decks used for gaming today. As far as history can tell, it was invented in Italy by Catholics as card game called Tarrocchi, similar to bridge or spades. At some point in history, people began using them for Cartomancy.... divination and fortune-telling...and it became known as Tarot.

Part of the lecture is devoted to demystifying how "psychics" and charlatans have used this card game to take advantage of people for money.

Over the last six centuries, Tarot has endured because the cards often reflect different aspects of the human condition and common psychological struggles we all face. It is a visual tradition that reflects our common fears, hopes, conflicts, and dreams through artistic and symbolic imagery. In fact, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud both explored the symbolism, meaning, and archetypes that can be found within the imagery and art of the Tarot. Many people find great meaning in this practice, some see it as a silly game, but everyone has fun.

During the talk, I provide a number of different decks to use, so that participants can see how the art depicted in various decks have evolved over 600 years, as they moved from Italy, France, all of Europe, England, and then to America. I also demonstrate readings and teach people how to read their own cards.

For those who fear this lecture encourages occult beliefs, satanism, witchcraft, or wizardry, I would simply encourage you to come and listen to the lecture with an open mind. You will probably leave with more information about how to protect yourself and your children from charlatans, fortune tellers and so called psychics.”

Loose leaf tea

Hello my fellow Venturans, I’m looking for a place to get some loose leaf tea that is not Emma’s herbs. Looking for green tea, chamomile, turmeric and ginger. I usually get these from Trader Joe’s but been seeing a lot of propaganda on micro plastics seeping in from this prepackaged tea products. TIA

On a hunt for the best hot Cheetos in Ventura County

I am a die hard fan of Hot Cheetos and since I could remember I’ve always enjoyed them extra spicy. Hot Cheetos used to be different, they had much more spicy sauce back then and I feel like over the years, the amount of Cheeto powder has decreased significantly. Let’s not forget the fact that the new bags that say “New lower price” really live up to its reputation because there is barely any Cheeto powder in those! I personally LOVE the Xxtra Hot Cheetos the most because they have the spiciest sauce and maybe even a little more sauce than regular Hot Cheetos. I know of one place in town that sells the Xxtra hot Cheetos with a pretty hefty amount of hot Cheeto sauce.. it’s the Grocery Outlet in Camarillo. I don’t know why but the flavor and amount of powder they put in those bags is so satisfying.. also I notice that certain markets get their Cheetos from certain manufacturers that make their hot Cheetos slightly different than one another. One manufacturer may sell Cheetos that have more of a lime flavor, another would sell Cheetos with no lime flavor and mostly hot spice, and others will sell Cheetos with hardly any sauce in them. I wanted to start this thread to see if we could work together and figure out the best stores or markets to shop at that will sell the most satisfying hot Cheetos in Ventura county.. I’ll start, Grocery Outlet in Camarillo on Las Posas rd.

Hank the cattle dog needs a home 🏠 🐕

Shares very much appreciated.

Hello. This is Hank. He’s a cattle dog mix. He’s a little under 2 years old, 23lbs, has recently been vaccinated, and will later this week be fixed.

He ended up not being a good fit for my parents household, so now he’s looking for a new forever home. He’s located in East Ventura and could possibly be your new best friend.

We think he will thrive in a household with no other dogs, cats, or small children. He needs lots of attention, discipline, and lots of physical activity on a daily basis. He’s very sweet and affectionate. We’d love to keep him out of the shelter if possible, so if you or someone you know is looking for a new companion, leave a comment below and we can talk about details in DMs.

Thank you so much. 🐕 😊

Pet bird?

This little guy is at the government center parking lot F I believe (in front of the HOA).

Pretty sure he's someone's pet although I don't really know much about birds. I tried calling to him but he wouldn't come to me. 😞

Group to Practice Connection & Attention - Hosted by a Ventura Local

Hi neighbors. Since there is often a lot of talk here about connecting with other people, I wanted to post a free online event I'm running next Thursday, May 28 as a part of a community I run that focuses on connection and leadership skills.

I run events monthly and this one is focused on attention.

I think many people are aware of the attention economy and its negative effects on us. We'll go a little deeper here in what's happening, how it is affection our relationships and beyond, and we'll finish with providing some simple practices use could use right away to take some of your valuable attention back.

Its 5:30pm-6:30pm on zoom, and free

Here's the link if you're interested: https://events.humanitix.com/stolen-attention-lost-connection-how-we-get-it-back

Happy to answer any questions and hope to see you there (or in town at some point 😊)

Animal Neglect

Good morning neighbors! I'm posting hoping for some resources to help an animal that's being neglected. My neighbor got a puppy around Christmas time and they initially seemed to be taking care of it until early this year when they apparently lost interest. The dog now lives exclusively on their patio rain or shine with seemingly no access to food and water. The poor dog is skin and bones and I'm unable to give it food or water because it's located on an upstairs patio. I have observed animal services visit the home multiple times and nothing has been done. I'm genuinely concerned about how much longer this poor dog can live like this. I hardly ever see the dog anymore presumably because they don't have the energy to bark and move around. I'm hoping maybe someone can connect me with a third party organization that can address this? I know animal services are already overwhelmed and underfunded and in addition to that I would hate to see this dog go from this situation to a kill shelter. Thank you for all your help!

Last day to register to vote in the upcoming primary

Hi all,

Today is the last day to register to vote for the upcoming primary.

If you haven’t received your ballot yet, it’s worth checking that your voter registration is still active. I recently found out mine had been switched to inactive, so I wanted to spread the word.

Check your voter status here: https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/

Any community events?

Hello!

I’m (f/25) looking for any type of community events around Ventura? I don’t have a ton of friends and I need to work on being social cuz staying home every weekend is getting boring lmao.

I’ll take any suggestions but something like a book club or maybe a game night somewhere at like a comic store? Preferably something where its okay to show up alone. Or any community hikes or anything really. SOS 🫠😭
