How was curly hair styled in the 1960s?

I know that a lot of women started to embrace their natural hair by the end of the decade. But I’ve come to realize that many 1960s hair trends were about keeping things neat with every twist and curve being intentional. Curly hair seemed to do the opposite and would flow and shag in all sorts of directions.

Did women then decide to finally take the iron or would they style their curls in different ways?

unscented pomade? / hair products

I've been getting into doing brush outs/wet sets- but I'm extremely sensitive to using scented products. Headaches like clockwork. And I finally got of the water based suavecita pomade and I really like the way it makes my hair look. I thought I couldn't know if would give me a headache until i got it... but I am thinking I need to find a unscented alternative. So I've come to ask- what unscented options are there for products for this kinda styling.
