Just my old workhorse (Yamaha xj600 51j)

Just wanted to share my motorcycle that I use almost daily during the summer. Old but modern for that time, fast but slow compared to todays bike. But reliable and enough to have fun with!

Its nearing the point where I have to do a major engine renovation as its drinking oil more and more. With it being the piston rings it will be a huge job but so worth it as I love the bike. Bought it from the first owner and it has almost rolled 120k km now. Hoping it will go to 200k after the rebuild this autumn!

Help diagnose engine noise!

My 1977 CB750F has a troubling rattle that I can't quite figure out.

I've checked the valve tappet clearances and adjusted the cam chain tension regularly, and recently, without any significant difference.

I'm either doing something wrong, or there's something else it could be.

Any ideas?

Chang Jiang CJ750

Was just given this CJ750 by my dad. Hasn’t been started in about 10 years, so I have some work to do. I’m fairly mechanically inclined, but this will all be new to me. Plan is to clean fuel tank and lines if needed (he said the fuel has been off the entire time), learn how to clean carbs, change all fluids. Apparently I will be learning how to set points at some point as well.

Rec’s on good project/beginner bikes

Unfortunately think my project bike I have is a little over my head and thinking about trying to get something a little easier to work on as I’m a new rider and am generally good with basic/intermediate mechanical knowledge, not a scrub but not a gear head. What would be a good beginner bike to 1) learn riding on and 2) be something fairly easy to work on and maintenance-able? I don’t love sport bikes so looking more for a cruiser or something just to enjoy on some weekend rides or an occasional Friday work ride

1982 Honda CB650 Help Needed!

So I’ve got a 1982 Honda CB650 that I’ve been working on as a project but I’ve run into a problem now. I put all new jets in the carbs and have fully soaked all of the carbs in an ultrasonic bath. When I run the bike I can run perfectly at idle when choke is MAYBE 1/4 of the way on, or if i put tension on the throttle when choke is off (Idling around 1200-1500). The minute i release the tension on the throttle with no choke, she dies. Vacuum’s are showing “late valve timing or leak at intake manifold”. What would be the best ways to go about checking what could be wrong? Stretched throttle cable? Cracked boots? Need some advice as I’m not familiar with these at ALL and should have done more research but we all start somewhere…

Finally replacing the bike that was stolen 25 years ago

I grew up riding a 1977 KE175 that was given to me and my brother by an uncle, he dug it out of his barn and it was not running and had no ownership, we got the bike running and rode it everywhere for 3 or 4 years before we woke up July 1st one year and the bike was gone, from what we could tell it was pushed out the back yard to the dirt road, pushed a couple hundred feet up the road and loaded into a truck never to be seen again.

This May I was on marketplace and just happened to stumble across an ad for a 1977 KE175, messaged about it but was busy and didn't have a chance to really talk to the guy till after the weekend, when I logged back on the bike was listed as SOLD, damn, I missed it, oh well. This past weekend the same bike just happens to pop up again, message to make sure its available and it was, now the bike is 7 hours from me, so I talk to the gentleman on the phone for a bit about the bike, explain how far away I am but also how serious I am about wanting the bike, even talked money over the phone without seeing it in person, sent a friend the money for him to go look at and pick up the bike. On July 1st he went and purchased it for me, 25 years to the day I finally replaced the bike that was stolen from me when I was a kid, now the anticipation is killing me, I own a bike, stuck in a barn 7 hours away and need to figure out the logistics of getting it from one end of the province to the other. Its not the same colour as the one I had but it is the same year and model and is actually street legal this time. Hopefully there are many posts to follow this one, and this will hopefully give me the ambition to get one of my F11s up and running.

1968 Honda Dream, first time buyer questions…

I am a first time “vintage” buyer. This looks like a great bike that clicks all the boxes for me. I’m told it’s been restored but is an older restoration since it was the sellers mom’s bike (and they are 20 years older than me). I was told it starts and runs as it should. What should I be on the lookout for as far as red flags or things a new buyer might not know to look for. Any and all advice is welcome.

This is money I was going to use on a down payment for a newer bike, but this one just speaks to me for some reason and I won’t have any payments if I can get it for the right price. They are asking $3500 but I think I can get them to go much lower.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and welcome. Thanks!
