I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

Party Venue

I’m looking to plan a surprise 30th birthday and looking for a venue. I’m still working on the numbers, but it could be anywhere up to 100 🫣 I’d like to sort my own catering and in a perfect world the function room would be free of use; which I know some places are given the expected takings on drinks. Does anyone have any recommendations in and around Wakefield?

Is Castleford actually a decent night out?

Usually end up in Wakefield or Leeds but someone suggested Castleford for a night out. Is there actually much going on there now or is it mostly pubs?

Jct32 name change

Jct32 freeport has changed it's name to Designer Outlet Leeds. Massive failing from Reform led Wakefield who are seen as so toxic that a place in the Wakefield district has felt the need to rebrand as as being in a different city.

What's Sharlstom Common like as a place to live?

As the title suggests really. It looks like a decent, small area but I can't decide if it's a dump or not going by Google maps.

*SHARLSTON

Can't correct the typo, cheers to the bellend who pointed it out without actually helping.

I am looking for a partner in crime 🕵️‍♂️

First of all, I meant the title to be metaphorical. This is a legal request 😁

I want to look at developing a little project. It is partially a hardware and a software project. And I am looking for a partner to work with. I can deal with all the CAD work, 3D printing, hardware, and even some of the more basic coding. But I need someone with better coding skills. The proof of concept will be based around an Arduino Giga R4 or an UNO R4 including some HMI and IO.

Please message me if this post is of interest.
