Gym Recommendation for not mad busy options

As per title, looking for a gym which has at least some quieter times. Was a member of Gym Group (above Lidl) but got completely fed up waiting for some inconsiderate person playing on their phone with headphones on not actually using the equipment for ages.

I get that people need breaks between reps (and many people are kind enough to work around you so both get to use the kit) but it was getting too regular and too annoying.

Nearest gyms to home are Better centres (Chingford Rd and Markhouse Rd) so would be interested in any views on any times where it's reasonably quiet. I work from home a lot so can be flexible with times to some extent. Must be close enough for a walk or cycle in a few minutes from Central.

Thanks for any views.

Where's everyone watching the football then?

I know the pubs can open til 5, but I wonder how many actually will? I'm currently thinking of heading over to the crooked billet in Clapton, but I imagine it'll get very busy!

Update (7pm) - The Chequers and Crooked Billet are both fully booked. The Hare and Hounds on Lea Bridge Road says they're showing it on their social media, and Big Penny social had tickets left when I checked earlier today (although they're £12!). The ferry Boat Inn say they're showing it on their website, not sure if booking is required or not.

GAA club - interest?

Hey everyone.

If there's enough people that know gaelic football and/or hurling in the area maybe we could get something going. With an ethos of everyone welcome to learn the games! Please comment

Vet suspects dog ingested cannabis on Walthamstow marshes

A cautionary tale to dog owners! For context, our dog is a scavenger and it’s impossible to avoid her eating random things even when on a short lead.

After a walk on Walthamstow marshes where we often take her, she became very unwell; she had a seizure, could barely hold her head up, couldn’t stand and wouldn’t eat or drink. It was very scary and we went to the vets where they looked after her and thankfully she recovered as the day went on. Even after we brought her home she was very weak and pretty out of it until the next morning.

The vet suspects she ingested cannabis of some form on her walk as she’s seen similar presentations before.

Mainly, I’m posting this for awareness in case this may impact any other dogs!

Curious if anyone has encountered such a thing with their dog. An additional slight rant about all the rubbish in Walthamstow in general when it comes to dogs: banana peels (one day I counted fifteen discarded that I fought my dog away from), chicken bones, discarded fruits with pips in Lloyd park etc, you need to be constantly on guard. For reference we live in the hoe street end of poets corner.

Turtle Bay is finally shutting down

Turtle Bay was the 1st restaurant I ate at when considering moving to Walthamstow - the experience was okay I guess.

The second time I ate there it was terrible, I think I got the curried goat burger or something. I didn't enjoy it.

Despite that, I was still willing to give another chance. My third (and last) experience left me feeling nauseous so I decided never again!!

I'm really surprised it managed to survive this long to be honest, with so many better establishements coming and going around it.

Here's hoping something exciting fills the vacant space.

Weekly social groups in Walthamstow

I'm looking for a weekly kind of community/social group, wouldn't mind if they did activities like reading or crafting

I've been part of one associated with mental health, but as I'm coming out of that I would like something with a different group of people

Thanks for any feedback

I was planning on going to William the 4th but they posted on their insta they can't stay open due to licensing restrictions.... guessing it's the same for a lot of venues so is there anywhere in E17 that is open for it?

Buying in Highams Park - Thoughts?

We're a couple in our late 20s looking to buy in the next two years. We've lived in Highams Park for a few years (in rented accommodation) as we wanted to test out the area before committing to it. We like it just fine, but find it a bit lacking in terms of things to do - we feel like we've exhausted the walks around the lake and the park, the walks up to Epping Forest , walks to Wood Street and the cafes locally. We also don't love that every time we want to get somewhere to go to a museum, nice shops, or nicer cafes we need to take the overground. We don't quite get the "village-y" feel that a lot of people say this place has and we're slightly worried there are not many people our age around. I'm not sure if its because we're missing something or we're doing something wrong - but wondering how people feel about living here and what makes it a great place to put down roots?

Staying cool in Walthamstow

I haven’t seen any posts about staying cool in the area, so thought I would make one in the hope of finding places and ideas.

Yesterday my family kept cool on Wood Street in the library and with the water fountains. Weirdly, I don’t see either mentioned on the Waltham Forest site here: https://www.walthamforest.gov.uk/health-and-wellbeing/stay-well/stay-well-heat though there is other good suggestions.

We’re doing all the stuff to keep the house cool - strategic covering or opening of windows depending on time of day, creating cross breezes, etc. Our house heats up pretty quick.

BBC has good tips here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz6gxe61p70o

Anyone got any suggestions or good local places with AC that I might not know about?

Chingford Road shops

Does anyone know if there’s anything happening with the shops on Chingford Road near the Dog and Duck and the big roundabout? A few are boarded up, and other than that there’s four off-licenses, a greasy spoon, a kebab shop and a dry cleaners.

I’m not asking for massive gentrification, but would be great to see the boarded up shops taken over, and four off licenses all next to each other is unnecessary - would love to have more variety. It’s a very residential area with lots of young families so I reckon a nice cafe would do well there.

I know there’s Buhler, Wynwood District and the nice grocery shop, but those are way further down on the corner with Forest Road.

What do you think, do you like what’s on offer at the moment further up on Chingford Road?

The Prince of Wales Higham Hill

So on here a while ago it was said that the Prince of Wales pub on St Andrews road was becoming a pub again. The outside has a lot of work done to it but it has all seemed to come to stand still. I live just down the road from it and every now again they have the doors open and it looks like the inside is kinda being done up. If you look on Google maps there is aomething called "The Hot Box cafe" in the location of the pub not sure if that has something to do with it?!?? Any ideas!?!?
