How much money do I need for a year at college

How much does one typically spend in one year at college . I live a basic lifestyle I like to play sports and I don’t go out or drink .I plan on buying a car soon ,other than that no other expenses . How much money would I realistically need to be comfortable for my first year . Also I’m coming from a different country so I don’t know how expensive items are in the US.

Regarding An A&S -> Olin Transfer

Hey, I was just admitted off the waitlist for WashU and I'm curious if anyone can speak on the new process of transferring into Olin? They just changed the process this year and I haven't found good info from current students on how realistic it is. Would love some insight thx

finding clinical hours

hi all. i am a rising sophomore and i am a bit confused on getting my clinical hours. i don't have any certificates that allow me to do emt, ma, etc. i care about committing myself and so flexible hours would be a dream (i'm not sure if that's asking too much though). i would REALLY appreciate it if people could share what they did/do and dm me about any opportunities or any ways i could go about finding opportunities.

Talk to me about the busy highway I see on the side of campus

I am a prospective student thinking of applying to WashU in the fall. I hope to visit between now and then, but right now I am just looking at pictures of the campus and Google Maps.

I see what looks like a big highway called Forest Pkwy running along the side of campus, right along where there are campus buildings. Are those buildings dorms? If they are dorms, do a bunch of dorm rooms have views down onto this busy highway?

Is the traffic on that road really loud or is the campus insulated enough from the roads that surround it to be peaceful?

When to apartment hunt

I am starting at WashU this upcoming fall and have noticed the apartments near campus are scarce. When does everyone start looking/sign leases? Thanks!

Questions about WashU/the area

I recently got accepted into a 2-year program at WashU (STEM), but I'm hesitant to commit for a couple of reasons. I'm a native Californian and honestly didn't think I'd get accepted. I wanted to stay in California to be closer to family and the weather, but the cycle has been rough and WashU is the only acceptance I've got for a program beyond just looking at industry work. I can of course come back to California, so I had some questions about living at Saint Louis and the campus:

  1. How's housing? I've looked online at pricing and such but haven't visited so I can't get the full picture of how housing looks. I'd like to live close to campus, one bed/bath or studio, is that doable?
  2. What's the cost of living like right now in Saint Louis?
  3. How are the winters in Saint Louis? I'm not a huge fan of rain/snow (being from California), so just wanted to get an idea of how that's like
  4. What's the social life like, especially for someone who's coming out of undergrad and will be in a grad program?

Would really appreciate any insight and if there's anyone from California who went to or is at WashU that'd be great

A Tribute to Gaylord Music Library

The Gaylord Music Library will close in May 2026 after sixty-six years. Completed in 1960, the library was a significant milestone in WashU’s growth and has since served as the focal point for the preservation, understanding, and study of music history and material culture. Funds for the music library were donated by Catherine Gaylord in memory of her husband Clifford W. Gaylord who served on Washington University’s Board of Directors from 1941 until 1953.

How's the sociology department actually like?

I'm an incoming transfer student trying to decide between WashU and NYU, and honestly WashU soc is the part I know the least about. I know the department is relatively young which makes me a little uncertain.

A few things I'm wondering:

Does the department being newer actually matter? Like is there fewer resources for undergrads, or has it caught up by now?

How accessible are professors for research? I keep hearing WashU is good for undergrad-faculty relationships in general but don't know if that extends to soc specifically.

What's the vibe of the major – is it a pretty small tight-knit group or do people just take classes and bounce?

I also talked to someone who mentioned WashU soc tends to focus a lot on St. Louis-related issues, racial policy, urban stuff. Is that accurate or is it broader than that?

Employees please answer

Hello,

In WashU Once we receive a promotion, how appropriate is it to discuss with our manager or department whether there is any flexibility in the salary, especially if HR mentions that the offered amount may not be competitive or aligned with expectations?

Also, what is typically the maximum salary increase or range that can be offered during a promotion?

Hey all! I recently built a a workout tracking app called Fortis: Workout Log & Tracker and am looking for Cincinnati students to try it out and give me honest feedback. It's kind of like Strava but for the gym. You can log workouts, track progress over time, build custom exercises and templates, and share progress with friends on the app.

Still early but I think it's genuinely useful if you're trying to stay consistent.

Free on iOS and Android. Would love any feedback, good or bad, if you give it a shot.

Landlord horror story

My sister just graduated and last year she thought she had found a great apartment. She toured the place, skimmed the lease, etc. By the end, she was hit with $1,200 in charges that she had no idea about like cleaning fees, administrative fees, whatever they wanted to call it. The place was also advertised as on the shuttle route. The stop was a 25-min walk from the door.

Watched that happen and was annoyed enough that I started building useproximity.org - verified peer reviews of WashU apartments so you can see what past tenants actually say before you sign anything. Also does personalized housing matching and scans leases for hidden fees.

I'm a rising junior so about to go through this myself, which makes it feel pretty real. What's the worst thing you've run into? Hidden fees, maintenance nightmares, specific landlords to avoid? Trying to build this thing around what students actually experience so any stories help.

CUHK Olin Study Abroad

I was accepted into the Chinese University of Hong Kong study abroad program through Olin!

I was curious if anyone has any insight into what to expect such as prices (particularly for food), extracurricular opportunities, making friends, things to do, etc!

I don't know a lick of Cantonese yet, but I plan to start practicing soon. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Is wash U dual degree pre engineering program worth it?

I am gonna attend Depauw University for pre engineering. I have guaranteed transfer to Case Western (3.0 Gpa) Wash U ( 3.25 gpa) Columbia ( not guaranteed). I am doing pre engineering cuz I didn’t got into any engineering school and the ones I got to were too expensive to attend, I am attending for free at depauw.

I just wanted to know how good is the program, if I will receive good support from the faculty? Also if they give good aid? Saving what would my parents give me for depauw I will be able to pay 25k a year for 7k pell grant and 5k fed loans for the last two years

Hi, I am wondering if the university publishes a recording of the graduation? I know that they live stream them, but curious if there is an actual recording anywhere (not the commencement)! Thanks!

disability resources for incoming freshman?

first of all, happy graduation to the class of 2026! congratulations!

I’m an incoming freshman for fall 2026, and i’m wondering about the quality of disability resources at washu. i’ve already had quite a bit of trouble with contacting them about getting accommodations. it’s not possible to call them because they don’t pick up and the voicemail box is full, and it’s difficult to email as well because it takes multiple days to get any response. i filled out the accommodations request form as early as i could and included all of the necessary files, but they contacted me saying i need to meet with them. i don’t know if that’s normal, and the meeting keeps getting moved. of course i know that this is a busy time, i just worry if this is the norm for disability resources, and i worry about working with them the next 4 years. i’m starting to wonder if it’s even worth the time and if i should just stop having accommodations. i have adhd, so i guess it would be possible for me to go without accommodations, ive just had them for the past 6 years so i get nervous…

what are people’s experiences working with disability resources, especially with adhd? is it even worth it to pursue accommodations? thank you all!
