caste dimorphism: redefined (standard lycanthropes vs. alpha lycanthropes)
yap: i have a string of theories that i’ve been wanting to post that relates to this theory i’ve posted a while back. but looking back at it, there were quite a few hunches in that post that no longer hold up as well, since we’ve gotten a better view of the cgi models. you can also tell that the old post was kind of written on a whim, so i’ll be more concise and conclusive with this one.
a lot of what i go over will be similar to what i’ve already touched on, but i’ll cut out some of the things that were based purely on speculation regarding the appearance of the werewolf models, and also resolve some of the things i left as open for interpretation. there will still be quite a bit of speculation in this post, so it’s not to say that i won’t be speculating anything.
——————————————————————————
- what is caste dimorphism?
caste dimorphism is a biological phenomenon that typically occurs in eusocial organisms, where individual organisms of a species are morphologically distinct, possessing unique physical and behavioral characteristics that will determine its biological role or function within a social hierarchy.
for example, honeybees have three separate castes that basically everyone has heard of at some point in their lives: workers, drones, and queens.
like 99.9% of species that exhibit caste dimorphism are insects, typically eusocial ones.
there are like two known mammals that exhibit caste dimorphism, which can be found in naked mole-rats, and much more subtly, damaraland mole-rats.
some organisms exhibit polypheniesm, which refers to a phenomenon where individuals of similar genetic makeup possess the ability to display an advanced phenotype. think honeybee larvae being fed royal jelly. any of them could end up being a queen. but that isn’t the case with lycanthropes, as it is suggested that their genotype determines their caste.
——————————————————————————
- how do werewolves model this?
werewolves exhibit caste dimorphism through differing anatomies and physical features, as well as the way their dimorphism affects their perceived status within a pack. though werewolves don’t perform eusociality like the vast majority of organisms with caste dimorphism, the varying phenotypes dictate the way they interact with other members of their species.
the most prominent difference is that alpha lycanthropes are not confined to the lunar cycle, and unlike standard lycanthropes, do not require a full moon to transform.
as for physical appearance, hear me out: wednesday’s wolf form and enid’s season 1 wolf form are both standard werewolf phenotypes. enid’s transformation at the end of season 2 is an example of the stark physical differences between alphas and standards.
you may be wondering that if enid had always been an alpha, wasn’t her first transformation also a display of her alpha werewolf form?
but we know these alpha werewolf symptoms only became apparent at the end of episode 5, suggesting that her alpha phenotype only presents itself once these symptoms were established.
and it may seem even more confusing for me to imply that wednesday’s werewolf form didn’t display an alpha phenotype, when i’ve implied that being an alpha is a biological state. regarding their physical appearances, you can see that wednesday’s wolf form and enid’s season 1 wolf form bear similarities in their appearance, including slim, lanky builds, and smaller shoulders. with enid’s alpha phenotype, she is more robust with more defined musculature and broader shoulders.
i don’t think that the expression of the alpha werewolf phenotype is entirely dependent on the genetic makeup of the individual who harbors it. referring to what was said in an interview by the showrunners, they described alphas as “super-leaders.” we know that a person’s spirit represents their werewolf form, suggesting that one’s essence is intrinsic to being an alpha.

Anyone know who made either of these arts?

Wrote this awhile ago, thought you all might enjoy it
For context, I wrote this because I was unsatisfied with the way that Enid and Wednesday's reunion went (or rather didn't go at all) after Wednesday was definetrated. It's just a small little thing I wrote, not really finished, but there's a decent amount.
Wednesday walked into her dorm. Happy to be rid of the overly sanitized hospital room she'd been in for a month. Upon entering, on the more colorful side of the room she could immediately see Enid look up from her phone and hop right off the fluffed up bed spread. Enid advanced on the raven haired girl with an eager, anxious but relieved, look in her eyes.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so so sorry. I should've come with you. I could have stopped Tyler. I mean sure it wasn't a full moon, but I could have done something! And he threw you out a window, and you landed on the ground, and you hit your head-"
"Enid." Wednesday attempted to get the girl to at least take a breath.
"-and you needed stitches! Thing said you needed like, ten stitches! And staples!!" Enid could not get over the severity of the injuries Wednesday sustained. She knew Wednesday was strong, but she didn't want to test that limit.
Wednesday, though silently bothered by the thoughts of what went on while she was unconscious and vulnerable, didn't let it dwell in her mind. "did you think a little tumble out the window would kill me?"
Enid's blue eyes widened slightly. "no! No of course not. But.... That wasn't a tumble, Wednesday. You went through glass and fell from the second story. You..." Her eyes went glossy. But for her friends sake she attempted to hold it together. "You were bleeding, I think I could even see your skull..." She could still remember the panic she felt at the gnarly sight.
Wednesday's expression softened. Thinking about it on the flip side, she would have felt sick if it were Enid and not herself that was catapulted out the window like that. "Well.... I'm fine now. You don't need to worry about me anymore." It felt awkward, trying to be reassuring, but Enid deserved the effort.
A vigorouse nod from the werewolf. "Right. Yes, totally. I'm really happy you're back. It hasn't been the same without the daily noise of your typewriter hammering in my eardrums." Wednesday could recognize that small smile the peppy girl would make when she wasn't really being serious. "How're you feeling by the way?"
"indomitable." Wednesday answered shortly, but informatively. Not only did she have Enid to protect from Tyler, but now she had her own delicious revenge to enact. Served as cold as her dark heart.
"And before you continue to bludgen yourself with your own guilt. What happened was not your fault.... It was my own" This she couldn't deny in good confidence. As her mother annoyingly predicted, she got herself hurt by being reckless and narrow minded

I need fic recs
i really really love the idea of a fic where wednesday is kind of insane like that one song “the red means I love you”. i think it really fits her character and it would be cool to read. any recs?
The final chapter of A Piece of Me in You is up!
At last, A Piece of Me in You is complete!🎉
I really hope you enjoy it. I wanted to give this story, Wednesday and Enid, and honestly myself too, some real closure.
Writer’s block fought me hard on this one, but I pushed through, and I’m proud to say this final chapter ended up being pretty long. I’m also genuinely happy with how it came out.
Thank you so much to everyone who has read, commented, left kudos, or stuck with this story until now. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the ending, and as always, kudos and comments mean the world to me.
Thank you for being here with me all the way to the end. 🖤
Post S2 "Enid retrieval" fic recs
There's been a lot of negativity recently with certain events in the fandom (and fandom as whole) so I thought it would be nice if we could share some good stories. We've lost one of the big post-s2 fics about saving Enid, so here's some recs that will scratch that itch. All of these are complete:
You'll Have Problems Hunting Me Down by Mercury_Milkshakes
>Breaking Rosaline Rotwood's Curse is very different from surviving it.
>By surviving 24 hours, they managed to postpone the consequences, but it could only go dormant for so long. Three weeks after Wednesday promised to hunt Enid down, the curse woke up.
>Continuation of Season 2.
A personal favourite of mine, definitely in my top 10 fandom fics.
Lamb to the Slaughter by anonymousjackrusselterrier
>Enid’s alpha form was ludicrously easy to track. The messy trail of bear carcasses, fallen trees, and deep clawed scars in the earth might as well have been a blinking neon sign for the Addams family hunting party.
>No, tracking wasn’t the problem.
>The problem was all the other werewolves.
>---
>Or, Wednesday won't let anything stand in her way of finding Enid. Not even packs of angry werewolves.
>And especially not the annoying twisting in her stomach that pops up every time she thinks about her best friend. That would only serve as a distraction.
forget me not by Zapcrictifier
>"You're right. We should save all our butt-kicking for that psycho Galpin. I'm going to have a field day bashing his stupid face in." She pauses and laughs, "Wednesday's been rubbing off on me too much."
>The beast says nothing, for the names bear no meaning or importance to it.
I'm prepared to sacrifice my life (I would gladly do it twice) by SpookyAutumnLeaves
>“Kneel.” a wolf hunter spits the command at her, face contorting into a wicked grin, obviously enjoying this.
>This is an execution. She realises, stomach dropping. Her Addams brain is screaming at her to ignore the command, to fight, to maim, to kill, or to at least try. But she can’t, not if…
>For Enid.
>The single thought quietens her rebelling instincts, and she lowers herself to the ground, knees hitting the mud in surrender.
>And the hunters jeer.
>***
>Wednesday tries to sacrifice herself to save Enid’s life from hunters.
>Enid is not amused.
Finding Enid by H3lioN
>Wednesday promised to hunt Enid down. Five months later, she’s no closer than when she set out from Nevermore.
>Surely this won’t have any adverse effects of her.
Denial is a most reliable shovel by spaceosshy, True_tiny_gay
>Chasing Enid across the Canadian wilderness, while contending with both the looming shadow of a folklore horror and the emotional mutiny of her own heart, is proving to be quite the challenge for Wednesday Friday Addams.
To Chase What Runs by echointhewall
>Enid can't change back. The Council wants her dead. Wednesday wants her home.
>And maybe, finally, Wednesday will stop being a coward about three simple words.
I've also written several works that are all set post S2 and cover the retrieval to various extents, but the only one that focuses on it is:
The Pilgrimage by aerocon
>At the end of her hunt for a wolfed out Enid, Wednesday finds the mining town of Copperburn deep in the Canadian wilderness. The town sits quiet and abandoned, left to rot.
>A ghost town.
this scene is always so funny to me
“there’s no full moon to save you now” bro did u forget she’s like 3 times stronger than the average human even when she hasn’t wolfed out 😭 why are u walking up to her bro TRANSFORM 🙏
Anyone know what happened to Stanic?
I went to read more of The Woe That Binds Us but it couldn’t be found, and neither can the author. I’m devastated because I’m partway through that fic and it’s incredible!
hoepfully the last qustion fanfiction question, this oen about ages
This one, I feel, is definitely something to get other eyes on. The inspiration for my own fanfiction is "in the Aftermath," and it deals with some possibly heavy topics i dont want to get into cause i dont want to spoil anything. my question is about aging up characters or not aging them up for a fic that might try to explore things of an intimate nature as well as darker topics like violent urges. The intent is to do this tastefully but authentically and without pearl-clutching, but my concern is crossing a line or in setting up a situation where people's knee-jerk reaction is to get upset some of the topics would probly include vampire feeding, siren culture being rather open and fluid about things, and the big one wednesday possibly dealing with violent thoughts and feelings that are outside of the norm for even an addams.. so ultimanty to age up or not.. aged up obviously removes a ptentialy unconfortable element. keeping them around the 16-17 mark on the other hand puts them into a position of coming into their own and learning who they are, it becomes much more a coming of age story where their haveing to figure things out while dealing with things liek werewolf pack bs, vampire politics, and general outcast cultural difficulties
