What Should I Look for when Testing and Considering Yurt Life

I have always had a fascination with Yurts, it seems like it’d be something I could really enjoy living in. I wouldn’t be disassembling mine, and would want some comforts in my day to day yurt, and want to know what the highs and lows will be. I have seen them online with finished bathrooms and bedrooms and lofts. I not only have to convince myself but my family, as well, to give this a try. My goal was to put one on land and build from there as my family grew and we needed more space and privacy and as I paid stuff off. It might not always be a year-round home but it might be for a while. I live in Southeast USA, so I won’t be getting more than three inches of snow, but it does get hot and humid. I don’t want to sleep sweaty every night, but I do want a neat round tent house that sounds cool in the rain and has a fireplace in the middle and lets the cicadas song in. What should I be really looking into and considering.

I am looking for, and think I found, AirBnB style weekend rental cloth sided yurts in the south where I could go spend a few days in the summer and in the winter with my wife to make sure we are being realistic. What are some things yall would suggest we could do to really test out the experience and make sure we’re not just in love with the romance of it all?

I am sure it would have some inconveniences to work around, but I think it could be a cool way to live, and a nice way to make home feel like a more natural reprieve.

Also, does anyone insure these things, we do get tornadoes. My dream home plans included a storm shelter along with the yurts, but they might just not be practical in the south.

Yurt cabin?

I’m thinking about buying some land at a lake in northern Saskatchewan. it will only be used as a 3 season cabin and maybe the odd night when I go on an ice fishing trip. there’s power and natural gas run to the edge of the lot. Ive heard that they are loud when it rains, how loud is it? also how warm are they in the summer? what about snow load? I will get the snow and wind package. as you can tell I don’t really know anything about yurts so I’m in the very early preliminary stages.

What is yurt living like?

I’m considering buying a yurt to live in when I buy property in the UP. It wouldn’t be permanent but I’d live in it for a few years while I built a cabin or pole barn house. Would a 30ft yurt be big enough for a small family? Is it hard to put in plumbing and electrical?

Yurts in Italy?

Have anyone bought a yurt in Italy?

I am after buying one in September and place it in my parents field so that I can have a bit of privacy when I visit them.

Deck plans

I just had a duh moment. We've been trying to figure out how to draft simple, functionally correct, usable deck plans... and getting stuck on the whole "yurt is round" issue.

I was just on the Lowe's website and they have a deck builder tool and it has a feature for building a deck AROUND A POOL! I put in a 24' pool, the proper height, and customized a few other features and I had a draft of a set of plans and materials.

I still have some work to do, but this seems like it will make the task a bit more idiot-proof.

Buying a new yurt, upgrade questions.

Currently prepping the ground to put a 16' yurt on. It's just going to a kids hangout spot , think, upgraded treehouse. Going through some of the main sites upgrade options. Curious as to how much I can keep base and upgrade myself. Mainly doors and windows. I can do those renovations on houses, but don't have much experience on yurts.
