Handling socially leaving and joining FCs?

So, I'm an anxious extrovert (horrible way to be I know) but I love chatting and making friends. I am no-lifeing this game rn because I am unemployed and usually would play most days anyways.

I joined an FC last week, very nice people. We have spoken on discord while doing an extreme together. However, they are busy people and are not online that much. There's at least one other person online each day, but the FC chat is dead unless I am asking questions/chatting. The FC has only 30 people, which I thought was a good thing, but it seems quiet.

I have met other people from a bigger FC (80) people and I am considering making the jump. But my main worry is maybe I won't like this next FC either? What if I want to go back to the old FC? I don't know. Has anybody else FC hopped and do people take offence?

I'm afraid of never finding a place to fit in if that makes sense. It's only been a week in this current and FC and I'm not sure if I'm making judgements too soon.

- How long do you wait before switching FCs?
- Do you say anything to anybody if it's a small FC?
- Are people generally accepting if trying out FCs?

How do you run your settlement? One big settlement or many outposts? Or something else?

My partner and I are in the middle of our playthrough and at tier 3 buildings. We have our main settlement between Hearndeen and Bradford and we are running out of building space as we built on a lumpy steep terrain. As well as this, we have completely run out of hardwood in our area and transporting it takes forever. We have three outposts, and we are not sure whether to convert to only outposts or to move our main settlement south for better resources and space. Especially since we have cleared almost all bandit camps.

How do you play? Do you move your main settlement elsewhere? Do you strategically place your main settlement from the get-go? Am I meant to have 5-6 outposts?

And if you build outposts how do you guard them? Or do you just raise an army and only defend during raids?
