“Fascism” and Rhaenyra’s Lack of Individuality

This is a rough jumble of a lot of thoughts that I’ll probably have a more organized flow of later, but I’ve been thinking about why Rhaenyra’s character and arc so far is unsatisfying to me. Part of it is in the cast and crew’s comments regarding Rhaenyra becoming “fascist” and using fascist iconography. Rhaenyra is an absolute monarch in a feudal society - I realize there are feudal monarchs and absolute monarchs, but Westeros has characteristics of both systems, and given that Viserys declared her as heir and that’s that, I’ll use the term absolute monarch. GRRM also describes the Targaryens as absolute monarchs.

Regardless, fascism doesn’t apply here - it’s a modern governmental idea based on a burning sense of nationalism (usually far-right conservatism) that is governed by a dictator. I understand what they’re going for, but they’re wrong, and the fact that Rhaenyra is described as fascist when she is, 1) entitled to her throne by bloodline and the decree of the previous king, and 2) well within her rights to crush the usurping side in a civil war, is ridiculous. As a further example, Sonoya Mizuno said that Mysaria’s outlook is basically that she can’t believe she helped put a fascist in power when that goes against all of her beliefs (because she’s da peepul’s champion). So… it’s not questionable for Mysaria to help to put Aegon in power when she knows of his bastard child fighting pits and other unsavory characteristics, but when Rhaenyra makes the completely right move of firing her, suddenly she’s all “oh no this is terrible”? Mysaria conveniently deciding that having an absolute monarch is bad when said monarch is the first woman and shows even a hint of cruelty is so funny. I hate this implication from the creators that Rhaenyra was a good ruler until she finally decided to take action and do something that they defined as “aligning herself with Daemon” - which brings me to my next point.

Rhaenyra always seems to be defined through the lens of others. For example, this season, the creators kept saying that she was oscillating between two things: Mysaria’s vision and Daemon’s vision of how she should rule. Where’s Rhaenyra’s vision? What is Rhaenyra’s vision? Hell if we know, because she only ever makes decisions based upon what others think or suggest (Viserys, Mysaria, Daemon, etc). Emma D’Arcy herself has been quoted saying that Alicent and Mysaria were Rhaenyra’s moral compasses (lmfao). When we do see her make independent decisions, they’re usually idiotic (Septanyra, sending Alicent to kill Aemond). I keep realizing that, imo, Rhaenyra hasn’t had her own character since…S1? I was hoping we would get more of it this season, especially when we started to see her cruelty - but, nope. They strip her even of that by framing it as her listening to ol’ evil Daemon. She even quotes him when convincing Alyn to kill the High Septon. The only thing we’ve got for her is that she thinks she’s the Chosen One, and even those flames have been fanned by Daemon and, to a lesser extent, Viserys.

Rhaenyra is supposed to be a confident woman who knows what she wants and is secure in her femininity as relating to the throne and her ability to rule. Her descent into cruelty and paranoia is informed by her losses in the war. Instead, she’s adapted as an ineffectual co-dependent who is driven to cruelty by delusions of grandeur and her “devil husband” on her shoulder, and she is now labeled a fascist.

Thanks, I hate it. Again, rough draft of thoughts, but would love to hear others’ opinions, whether in agreement or disagreement.

Daemon in S4

Seems to me that there will probably be a role reversal between Daemon and Rhaenyra in S4, namely that Rhaenyra will be the bloodthirsty one while Daemon’s experience at Tumbleton will urge him more towards caution. At least, that’s the message I feel like the scene of him looking around at all the innocents in the midst of the carnage was getting at.

Thoughts?

Why People Are Conflicted About This Scene

This scene is a classic example of a character being a mouthpiece for the writers. Baela’s comments are how the writers want the audience to view Rhaenyra’s actions, both now and in the future. The issue is she is referring to a version of Rhaenyra that she doesn’t know and hasn’t seen yet. With the information Baela has and what she currently knows of Rhaenyra, she wouldn’t/shouldn’t be saying this.

Where has Baela seen Rhaenyra abandon anyone when their usefulness stops? I don’t even need to explain Rhaena, that’s just a wildly incorrect accusation from Baela and Baela should know it. Regarding Corlys, all Baela knows is that Rhaenyra refused to legitimize Alyn and Addam until a later date (even though I’m of the opinion Rhaenyra should have done it immediately) and then Corlys left of his own volition, and you have Rhaenyra literally saying she will have Daemon look for him to rescue him. Corlys is in Tumbleton. Daemon and the Blacks are marching on Tumbleton. It’s not like finding Corlys is going to be delayed because the two will be done at the same time.

She and Addam haven’t been abandoned, even when Rhaenyra had reason to bench Baela after the Gullet. Baela herself is the one who has been pushing them so hard to keep patrolling without rest, not Rhaenyra. Baela also should not expect Rhaenyra to be warm with her, probably not for a long time.

TL;DR - this is bad writing and a good example of the people behind the show saying a character is correct when the character is not based upon what they currently know.

Please Keep God’s Eye Book Accurate

Can’t wait to see Daemon 360 no-scope this fool ALONE. If they add Rhaena to God’s Eye, I’m going to crash out.

Making this post partially so I can come back and reference it in S4 when my worst fear most likely comes to pass. Still making prayers to the adaptation gods that I’m wrong, though 🤞

3x07 Leak

>!Rhaenyra and Mysaria will apparently have sex.!<

It’s all over X right now, saw this on the main sub and had to confirm it for myself. Forgot what a fucking cesspool X is. Anyway, the account that it seems to have came from has already been banned or suspended, but people were saying it was very credible, and this leak was included in the same set of leaks that mentioned Rhaenyra botching Otto’s execution.

If true? Lmao. Idk what else to do but laugh.

Lady Jeyne and Rhaena 👋

I don’t get why some people are upset over the slap or surprised that she did it. Jeyne is absolutely correct in everything she said. Rhaena isn’t just jeopardizing herself, but Jeyne’s own position and life. It was idiotic to risk being seen by literally thousands of people. Also, Jeyne is just a real one for showing no sympathy and saying Rhaena’s predicament is of her own choice and making.

Jeyne Arryn continues to be a standout character. I stan.

Dragon/Rider Mechanics

I wondered about this the other day, but if there is an answer, can someone with book lore knowledge explain if a Targaryen still has to claim a cradle egg dragon? As in, is there a chance that a cradle egg dragon will reject the person it hatched to? Or is it a “we’re bonded automatically” sort of thing? I’m assuming the latter, but just curious.

Post C-Section Workouts?

Hi, all! I am 8.5 weeks PP, cleared by my doc, and ready to start working out again. Before I got pregnant, I mainly did weight lifting and circuits, with a HIIT day here and there but my cardio was usually the incline treadmill.

Any advice for how to ease into things? If someone wants to share their workout routine, I’d be most grateful!

HotD Coverage?

When do we think they’ll start covering House of the Dragon S3? I am begging them to rip some of it apart. I don’t have anyone else in my life as into media as I am and need some sort of outlet for my frustrations with the story.

Phanpy S4 Cups + Baby Buddha

I bought the wearable Phanpy S4 collection cups to go with my Baby Buddha. Does anyone know how to hack them to the pump? The only videos I’ve seen for this brand connecting to the Baby Buddha is with a different variation of their cups.

Preemie Milestones

Hello, all! Just looking for advice from parents who have been in my shoes. I’m a FTM, baby was born at 34+5 on 5/13. Discharged from NICU on 6/5. Pediatrician told us to expect that kiddo will be about a month behind on milestones.

Can anyone else who’s had a 34 weeker share their experience on this? Was it mostly accurate? Not knowing when to expect things from her on top of being a FTM is stressing me out, and not knowing whether she acts closer to her actual or adjusted age makes me feel bad that I don’t understand her behavior more. Does this hold true for growth spurts and phases as well?
