Defender for Identity v3 requires MDE onboarding?

One of the new requirements for v3 release is:

>Has Defender for Endpoint deployed on the server. The Microsoft Defender Antivirus component can be in either active or passive mode. Defender for Endpoint must be onboarded on the server where the sensor runs; endpoint-only deployment isn't sufficient.

We use CrowdStrike EDR on the servers, and stack that with the Windows Server built-in Defender in active state, this includes Defender for Identity v2 agents. This is our stacked approach, while ensuring that the server is not exposed to any Defender cloud management plane, etc.

Was looking to upgrade to v3, and it seems that the new requirement is to onboard the server to Defender for Endpoint.

When it is on-boarded, what does that mean for the server? Is it now running Defender for Endpoint EDR?

Serious question for on-prem folks: How are you handling the recent VMware and hardware price hikes?

We’re seeing a 300–400% increase in VMware licensing costs. On top of that, recent quotes from Dell are three to four times higher than we would normally expect, especially for memory and storage.

Fortunately, we refreshed our storage environment about a year ago and went all-in on Pure Storage as-a-Service, its the only predictable fixed dollar amount subscription at this point, so we don’t have a major SAN lift-and-replace looming. Given today’s pricing, I can only imagine what that would cost now.

We’re also in a good position on the compute side. Production is running almost entirely on current-generation Dell R7xx servers, which means we could pause hardware procurement for two or three years and likely remain under active maintenance without much operational risk.

That said, simply kicking the can down the road doesn’t feel like a sustainable strategy. We would eventually be facing a large, simultaneous refresh—potentially at even higher hardware and licensing costs.

Our on-prem footprint is relatively small: two three-node clusters, each with 192 cores, 4 TB of memory, and 23 TB of low-latency NVMe storage, plus a handful of high-performance, dedicated ERP/database and dedicated backup servers.

At this point, I’m genuinely questioning whether continuing to operate our own data center will remain economically viable.

What are other on-prem shops doing? Are you maintaining staggered refresh cycles, extending hardware lifespans, moving away from VMware, switching vendors, buying refurbished equipment, or shifting more workloads to the cloud?

I also have to assume these increases will eventually ripple through to IaaS pricing from AWS, Azure, and other cloud providers.

Those of you in similar situations, how are you approaching this?

Visiting Tuzla - looking for local activities and nature spots

I’ll be visiting Tuzla for a few weeks with my wife to spend time with her family. Most of them are elderly, so we’re looking for things to see and do in or around Tuzla - ideally no more than an hour’s drive away.

We’d also love recommendations for quiet or lesser-known nature spots where we could spend the day, relax, and have a BBQ.

Thanks in advance!

How to customize camera wall in UNVR Instant?

Hello,

I have 3x G6 Bullets and 1x G6 Entry connected to UNVR Instant. The UNVR Instant is directly connected to a monitor via the HDMI port.

Anyone have any idea if I can change the camera wall so that the G6 Entry does not have those black borders around it?

Ideally either expand the bottom left Bullets camera feed, or change something on the Entry (aspect ratio?) so it fills better, its an eye sore.

Any pro tips?

I have RG59 coax cable run, can I use UACC-Retrofit-PoE-2Wire to power UVC-G6-Entry?

Hello,

At my house there was an existing coax cable run for an old camera setup that is no longer there. I was thinking of using this existing coax cable run for UVC-G6-Entry, and use UACC-Retrofit-PoE-2Wire to deliver PoE connectivity.

From what I was able to dig up, this is RG59B coax cable, and should not be a long coax cable run run, front door to 2nd floor of the house.

My plan was to get a cable testing kit (Klein Tools VDV512-101) before I commit to this, if it works, it sure would beat having to run a new network cable drop, the later would be a mess.

Curious if anyone has had any experience with similar setup?

Car parking options close to SeaTac airport?

Hi all,

Taking a flight out of Seattle on August 14th for 3wk and need to park our car.

The parking lots near the airport are very expensive, I don't need to convenience of shuttle drop off or pick up, seriously that's what Uber is for, or being within a mile of the airport.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to park within 10 mile radius, that is not $25/day?
