I’ve never been able to earnestly sing in front of my family or friends. Don’t get me wrong, I jokingly sing (very loudly and badly) all the time, but it feels too vulnerable to do it wholeheartedly. I guess I’m hoping this will help me gain a little more confidence?
Anyway, I wrote these song lyrics— the melody is obviously derivative of the white stripes song, just an exercise! Full disclosure, I think there’s a decent amount of vocal fry in this one, but let me know what you think!
VERSE 1:
Only child, an empty house
Candles grew, you stayed the same
Still baked a cake I couldn't eat
And we all laughed like it was sweet, but
I could tell that you were gonna kill me.
I could tell that you were gonna kill me.
VERSE 2:
Night time fell, the lights low
Never asked where I would go
I used to brag that you were cool
But now I see, I was a fool
Cuz I can tell that you are gonna kill me.
I can tell that you are gonna kill me.
BRIDGE:
And you don’t notice any time pass
You don’t notice anything
Don’t hear from you despite my pleas
The only ghosts I’ve ever seen
I’m begging will you please haunt me?
VERSE 3:
I’m older now and here’s the twist
I’ve got a band, wrapped ‘round my wrist
Angels waiting, doctors lie
I can tell I’m gonna die.
I can tell that I am going to die.
You don’t know and I am not surprised.
OUTRO:
I can tell that I am going to die.
But, you don’t know and I am not surprised.
Only child
An empty house
The candles grew
You stayed the same
Still baked a cake
I couldn't eat
And we all laughed
Like it was sweet
Made a wish
Happy cuz
I played pretend
Trouble, too
Caught by the cops
I told the truth
You brushed it off
Said we’re all clear,
No problems here
So I called it cool
I wore that crown
And never thought
To look around
Good on my own
But I didn’t know
The cost of freedom
Was being alone
Laissez Faire
So hands off
Fun and games
Till it’s not
I used to brag
My folks were cool
But now I see
I’m not so sure
I’m older now
And I’ve got a band
Wrapped ‘round my wrist
But not the kind
That you get for drinks
Emergency room
As I nearly died
And you wouldn’t know
But I’m not surprised
How many more times
Will I have to say
The phone works both ways
Only child
An empty house
The candles grew
You stayed the same
Still baked a cake
I couldn't eat
And we all laughed
Like it was sweet
Made a wish
Happy cuz
I played pretend
Trouble, too
Caught by the cops
I told the truth
You brushed it off
Said we’re all clear,
No problems here
So I called it cool
I wore that crown
And never thought
To look around
Good on my own
But I didn’t know
The cost of freedom
Was being alone
Laissez Faire
So hands off
Fun and games
Till it’s not
I used to brag
My folks were cool
But now I see
I’m not so sure
I’m older now
And I’ve got a band
Wrapped ‘round my wrist
But not the kind
That you get for drinks
Emergency room
As I nearly died
And you wouldn’t know
But I’m not surprised
How many more times
Will I have to say
The phone works both ways
