Help me pick my first ultrawide

Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade to an OLED Ultrawide. I work in video editing, 3D production, and want to start some game dev on the side. So primarily productivity work, but definitely some gaming as well (some FPS but mainly narrative/RPGs so I'm not massively picky about refresh rate).

I'm basically deciding between the 34" MSI MPG 341CQPX QD-OLED and the 39" LG UltraGear evo GX9.

I'm currently using one 27inch 1440p IPS monitor with a small secondary display, so I think either option will be a significant upgrade. I have an RTX 5080 so should be able to drive most games on a screen that size without issue.

Obviously the LG is double the price, so I'm wondering if you all think it's worth it. Would I be content with the MSI or should I just full send it? lol

Also open to other options I may not have heard of.

Rode NT1 4th Gen vs 5th Gen

Hi all,

I'm looking for a budget friendly mic to use for VO and sound effect design (mainly for ultra quiet sounds, as I have other options for different use cases).

I've more or less settled on the NT1, but need help deciding between the 4th or 5th gen. I can get both in good second hand condition for around the same price. From what I've read, the 4th gen has a flatter sound that people generally prefer. The USB on the 5th gen is appealing for convenience, but I do have a recorder and audio interface so I wouldn't need the USB most of the time.

My background is in video/animation, and I'm new to audio so would love any insight from the experts!

Cheers

Hi all,

I’m new to field recording (background in video/3D), and I’m looking to improve the sound design for my projects.

I’m currently deciding between the Zoom F3 and the Tascam FR-AV2. While I'll also use it on shoots or in a controlled environment, my main use will be recording ambiences, environmental sound, and general SFX out in the field.

My question is about live monitoring. I often want to turn up the headphone volume to hunt for subtle textures or distant sounds while recording. Does the FR-AV2 offer any real advantage here, or is the F3 just as usable?

I’d really appreciate any real-world comparisons between the two recorders in general. The Tascam seems more feature-packed but is also more expensive, so I’m trying to figure out if those features are actually useful in practice or just nice to have.

Thanks!
