Can we stop with the damn fireplaces!!!!

Can we please talk about the absolute chokehold fireplaces have on living room design?

Every apartment, condo, townhouse, and “luxury” new build is like, “Here’s your living room. We were going to give you a normal wall for your TV, couch, speakers, bookshelves, art, or literally any reasonable layout… but instead we put a fireplace right in the most important spot. Enjoy building your entire life around this decorative hole.”

And let’s be honest: most people are not using these fireplaces like that. Maybe three times a year someone goes, “Ooh, cozy,” turns it on for 17 minutes, gets too hot, and shuts it off. Meanwhile, for the other 362 days, the fireplace is just sitting there like a smug little dictator deciding where your furniture can go.

You want your TV at eye level? Too bad. Put it over the fireplace so everyone can watch Netflix like they’re seated in the first row of an IMAX theater. Hope your chiropractor has availability.

You want a sectional? Good luck. The fireplace has opinions.

You want a clean media wall? No. The fireplace is the media wall now.

You want symmetry? The fireplace says no.

And don’t even get me started on corner fireplaces. That’s not design. That’s architectural terrorism. Now the room has angles, the TV is diagonal, the couch is confused, and everyone is pretending this was “intentional.”

I understand fireplaces used to be necessary. Heat, survival, gathering around the hearth, all that. Respect. But in modern homes with central HVAC, smart thermostats, heated blankets, and the ability to order soup from a phone, why are we still sacrificing the entire living room layout to the Vibe Furnace?

At this point, I’m convinced builders are not designing homes for actual humans. They’re designing them for listing photos. “Look at this cozy fireplace!” Great. Now show me where the couch goes without blocking a walkway, a window, a vent, a door, or my will to live.
Not every living room needs a fireplace. Sometimes a wall should just be a wall. A beautiful, useful, unbothered wall.
