Google Home and Phillips Hue -- Sync Box

Hi guys, I recently got into the phillips hue eco system.

I got the lights, bridge pro, and the 8K sync box. However the Google Home app only recognizes the sync box as "Music Sync". If I tell it to sync to a video input it says it doesn't understand.

I've tried saying "Sync lights to video", "Sync Lights to HDMI1", "Sync Box to Xbox" (which is named in the phillips hue app), "Sync Box to HDM1". Nothing works.

Has anyone else had this problem?

How to get started if you inherit a Hue system?

Hi experts! I bought a new house this week, and am trying to get to know all the systems. There is clearly a lot of Philips Hue lighting. I found the bridge in a closet, got the app, and set it up; it only shows 8 lights and only 6 are active. This is really confusing; for one thing, every single can light in the house looks identical. There are 3 cans over a big window; the two outside ones can be controlled by the app and the middle one does not appear and is stuck on purple. There are strip lights in the tray ceiling that do a light show every time I hit the switch on the wall, but they don't appear in the app. There's a Hue dimmer switch on the wall next to the bed in the primary suite, and I replaced the battery but can't make it control anything, including the bedroom lights (you guessed it, more Hue cans). I got on the Hue website and can't really make heads or tails of the user manuals, which are picture based and intended for someone getting the product out of the box, not trying to take over an existing system. Is there a guide somewhere for this situation? I'd be so grateful for any help.

Orb/diffuser/cover came off hue lightguide large bulb

I was stupid and twisted this off instead of the bulb base. Will super glue work well enough? This wasn’t a cheap one! 😭

DO NOT UPDATE YOUR BRIDGE PRO

i just spoke with their customer service after my bridge bricked. They said they’re getting lots of calls and investigating this. So, turn off your auto update and DO Not update!

Update:
It appears that not everyone is affected. Only Philips may know why. There may be different revisions of the board. Nevertheless, the pain of having to set up everything all over is so great, that I will not ever update my bridge again. This has been the biggest disaster in my home automation journey in the last 10 years. All my original Hue bulbs that were my first smart devices, which I got more than 10 years ago, are still running.

It’s quite ridiculous that Philips has not provided a backup solution. Until they do I recommend not updating your bridge ever, or not use the bridge at all.

Hue Bridge Pro Bricked after Update

Last night I saw a firmware update and clicked to update. This morning I noticed none of my lights are working. The bridge is offline with a solid red light. ☹️

Has anyone experienced this?

I have 40 devices and the thought of having to redo everything…ugh
How is it Hue has no backup solutions?!

Looking for Design Help!

GM

I’m looking to perfect the lighting situation in my apartment for my tv and dining room area.

At the moment, I have a gradient sync light behind my tv, and two signe floor lamps. Also sync box + bridge pro.

I might end up using my signe lamps in my office, because I don’t know if they really are the best solution for the living room/dining space, as most of the wall space is windows which doesn’t lend itself well to reflecting light!

I’ve been thinking about strips across the ceiling or window sills, but just unsure which would look best.

Would love any ideas! I’m open to any solution.

I built an open-source android visualiser that drives Hue lights locally with low latency

I currently drive my Philips Hue lights to music when I'm playing music at home as part of a DJ/music performance setup.

I use the official Philips Hue Mac app to drive my lights as part of this setup, and share the audio from my music applications. However - the official Mac application just isn't great for this and it never really feels like the lights are connected to the music.

I'm from a software engineering background, and I've recently been developing a music visualiser application with a focus on low-latency. Whilst this wasn't originally intended to solve my Hue problem - I recently introduced a Philips Hue lighting integration into the app, and I have found the results to be immediately and noticeably better than the official app.

This app is specifically engineered to react quickly because it uses the low-level C++ microphone engine to capture sound under 10ms, and sends UDP commands directly to your local Hue Bridge. The result is that the bulbs react instantly to the music in the room.

(And - this is niche - but I have also integrated Ableton Link so the visuals and lights can be supplemented by the beat coming from popular music DAWs and performance software e.g. Traktor)

The app is completely free, open-source, and has no ads or tracking. I'm currently in closed beta and I'm just hoping for some folks with different Hue bridge setups to give it a go and let me know how it performs.

Different devices and microphone sensitivities can be a real challenge on Android, but the app does offer some advanced controls for tuning, and there's a lot more finesse and features to come. So I really think this can become the best way to sync music to Hue lights.

Source code: https://github.com/rorygallagher2024/velo-visualiser/ (open to contributions!)

To test the app, you must follow these steps in order:

  1. Join the Google Group here: https://groups.google.com/g/velo-testers (Click the 'Join Group' button)
  2. Opt-in on the Web here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.lowlatency.visualizer
  3. Download the app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lowlatency.visualizer

Once downloaded, all I'd ask is that you keep it installed for the next few weeks, and if you have any feedback to offer, please let me know!

Thanks!
