Help me save the last bit of my rose bush!
My beautiful rose bush had to be torn out by contractors suddenly who were fixing some foundation issues. I have never grown anything from a cutting so I called my grandmother in a panic who told me to cut a small stem and put rooting hormone and then keep it in damp soil. I took 3 cuttings 2 weeks ago and did as she said and 2 have died already. This one is not looking so hot but it's still alive, although the leaf edges are getting dry. I unfortunately had it out in the sun until a few days ago because I didn't know any better. I brought it in and put it in front of a north facing window but I'm so worried that I've toasted the last living bit of this very old bush (it is at least 30 years old!).
There so much I didn't do right (didn't cut it at an angle, didn't take a thick enough stem, had it out in the sun until recently) because i didn't know but I want to do everything I can to save the poor thing. Any tips?
I've read that I should have put it in water no soil but I'm worried it's not healthy enough for that to be an option at this point in the process since it's probably hanging on for dear life at this point.
edit for more details: there are 5 leaves on it currently. I took off about 4 leaves a few days back that seemed dryer than the others. I'm keeping the soil damp but not soaked. I worry I washed away the rooting hormone bc I was watering from the top for a while but I have no idea. not sure the state of the current root system, if any. stem still seems wobbly. middle of the leaves kind of feel like leather but the edges are dry. stem seems healthy. I would trim off the top bit but don't want to take away any further energy reserves the little guy may have.
