Large Hikvision Residential Install (39 Cameras) - 2x 32ch NVRs or 1x 64ch NVR?

Currently planning a fairly large residential install for a property with multiple outbuildings, stables, garages and barns that all need monitoring. The client already has a number of existing Hikvision cameras and wants to stay with the brand, so we're keeping everything within the Hikvision ecosystem.

Current camera plan:

  • Hikvision DS-2CD2387G3-LIS2UY/SL (8MP G3, 2.8mm/4mm) × 13
    • Priority areas
    • Most targets within 30m
  • Hikvision DS-2CD2347G3-LIS2UY/SL (4MP G3, 2.8mm/4mm) × 10
    • Internal stable, garage and barn monitoring
  • Hikvision DS-2CD23167G3P-LIS2UY/SL (16MP 180° panoramic) × 5
    • Overview Cameras, for large areas (e.g. Sand school, fields..)
  • DS-2SE7C432MW-AEB(14F1)(P3) TandemVU PTZ (32x zoom) × 1

We're also retaining a handful of existing cameras:

  • 4 to 6 older Hikvision 4MP cameras covering longer-distance areas (30m+)
  • 4 existing ANPR cameras, which aren't being replaced at this stage

That brings the system to roughly 40 cameras total.

Where I'm struggling is the NVR choice. This is larger than the projects I normally work on, so I'd appreciate some real-world input from anyone who's deployed similar-sized Hikvision systems.

At the moment I'm debating between:

Option 1

  • 2 × 32-channel NVRs
  • Potentially better load distribution and some redundancy if one unit fails
  • Works out slightly cheaper from initial pricing

Option 2

  • 1 × 64-channel NVR
  • Looking at the DS-9663NI-M8
  • Potentially upselling to a DS-9664NXI-S8/R if there's enough justification for the additional cost and AI features

A few considerations:

  • Sticking mostly to 2.8mm and 4mm lenses due to budget constraints
  • Client wants good coverage but cost is definitely a factor
  • Retention requirements haven't been finalised yet, so storage may influence the decision as well

My main question is whether you'd go with dual 32-channel NVRs or a single 64-channel NVR for a deployment like this, and why?

Any other observations on the camera mix, bandwidth considerations, storage planning, or anything else I've overlooked would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
