What's the best home security camera you've actually been happy with?

I've finally decided it's time to add a couple of security cameras around the house. Nothing happened thankfully, but after a few package deliveries disappeared from the neighborhood, I figured it's better to be proactive.

I've been reading reviews for days, and now I'm more confused than when I started. Some people say image quality is everything, while others care more about reliable motion detection, battery life, or not having to pay another monthly subscription.

I'd mainly be using them for the front door and backyard, so good night vision and dependable notifications matter more to me than having a hundred extra features I'll never use.

For those of you who have had security cameras for a while, what did you end up buying? Would you choose the same system again, or is there something you'd do differently if you were starting over today?

Needing a camera or doorbell camera for apartment that records all the time

I’m 20F, random people keep coming to my apartment door late at night and yanking the knob trying to get inside, I think a group is trying to get in and squat or break in, I want a camera that will record everything, at the moment I have a blink door bell the latest one that’s on AA batteries and that camera doesn’t record everything, there’s a time limit on how much it can record then it cuts or if the person isn’t there for long realizing they are on camera the camera doesn’t record since they aren’t standing looking at it long enough, but most altercations are longer than 30 seconds, I would like something that captures everything and not cut out when someone’s yanking on the door, I’m concerned if they actually get in the camera won’t actually record that and my evidence is non existent, what kind of camera should I get? I was thinking a ring that’s wired that can record 24/7, my door or actually on the trim has a small little doorbell button that makes a buzzing noise come out of the intercom as an I guess digital doorbell, I think it’s from the 80s?, could I somehow take that button out and use the wires from that if this was the route I’d take, please send me some recommendations on what I should do or what cameras are out there. Thank you for reading!

working up a camera DIY project

This is something that's been on my back burner for a while but now I am looking into it.

I have a house and a barn that are about 100' apart at the closest point in a heavily wooded area. I would like cameras on the barn and the house in one system, POE, NDAA, overlooking themselves and each other. I figure an 8 camera system is not sufficient but I won't go larger than a 16 because it just seems nuts.

I am thinking of a 16-port NVR in the basement, an 8-port POE switch in the garage, an 8-port POE switch in the barn. I have spare OM4 running between the basement and the barn so that leg would need media converters too.

I have spent some time reading up on this. I have no previous experience with camera systems and am curious about the interconnection setups.

I have contacted a couple of the bigger online outfits that seem to support DIY but so far that hasn't proved fruitful.

My goal is to build the setup a camera at a time an learn enough about them as I go.

I was thinking of using Hanwha because I think I can get them without an installer.

Thoughts ? options?

Thanks

Looking for a wireless camera that records locally to a SD card but can check the recordings direct (built in Wifi or Bluetooth)

I need a solar powered wireless camera for my shop, I have power if I must, but I have no Wi-Fi.

I'm hoping to be able to check my camera without having to remove the SD card and can just connect to it directly to view the recordings

Wide double lens camera or turret style for a very wide front exposure?

Corner property that is wide. I like the Reolink products.

I have a doorbell, which is centered on the front exposure. I was planning to add 2 cameras to the front of the house, left and right corners.

I bought a duo 3v and a CX820.

I was going to put the duo on the corner end of the property since it would potentially be easier to come at the camera from behind via an easy public access road. The CX820 on the opposite end, angling towards the middle of the property. Given the property layout, there is still a bit of land on the side of the house that the CX820 would miss.

Am I better off installing TWO duo 3v (one in either corner) for better coverage. Or is the quality of the CX820 that much better that it’s worth sacrificing some loss of field of view? I could always use the CC820 elsewhere if I were to buy a second duo 3v.

Thanks!!

1240A pigtail cable disconnect

I am looking to temporarily disconnect the pigtail cable from a 1240A camera.
I have gotten so far as to remove the molex from the inside of the camera.
However, I am unable to loosen the plastic winged grommet nut from the base of the camera.
I tried needle nose pliers, but that was unsuccessful.
I also contemplated using two flathead screws to turn the nut, but I don’t think that will work.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Is there anyway to get around a thermal camera

Theoretically if i were to build a house in the woods I i didn't want my pesky government finding such house in the woods because I'm not playing them for it to be there is there any way that I could block them from seeing me? Is it possible for me to have a fire without them clearly seeing me?

Panasonic Iris Reader BM-ET500

I have the BM-ET500, along with the BM-ED500 control unit, but I am struggling to find the administration software. I know this stuff has been discontinued for a while - but it is new in box and I'd like to use it if possible.

Assuming the Panasonic software isn't available, I am reading the IrisID iData EAC software might work.

Appreciate any thoughts or insights.

Any outdoor wired camera with a VPN client?

I need to install a stand-alone outdoor security camera that will need remote maintenance. So far I've only seen cloud and hacky Windows apps. Is there any network camera that can be a VPN or Wireguard client?

It would record locally to a memory card. Remote access would be for software updates and troubleshooting.

So far...

  • Ubiquity - Pure marketing, no specifications. "Install the app" is the setup guide.
  • Axis - No VPN support. There's a SOCKS5 tunnel over wireguard hack that doesn't look great. Older OS has root access but no Linux package manager. Axis has a remote access solution requiring Windows.
  • TP-Link - I don't trust this company
  • Wyze - Very low resolution
  • Eufy - Seems to only sell bundles with an NVR
  • Reolink - Very little online information. "Install the app" is the setup guide.

Also...

  • PoE router with VPN. Most of these are VPN Servers. It's not clear how it would link a security camera as a VPN client.

Tapo hub storage selection

I have a c660 with a 256gb micro SD card in there. I also have a tapo hub and am wondering in settings if I should choose to record on tapo hub or micro SD? I also am wondering if I choose to do the tapo hub option will it still record to the micro SD? I want some redundancy in case someone messes with the camera or steals it.

WiFi and solar security cameras.

Alright posted a little while back but wanted to ask a different way, so looking into some solar/ WiFi security cameras. I’ve done a ton of research and know that POE is better but not an option sadly only able to do WiFi and solar panel. Not a lot of ambient light either for the night so take that into consideration but need something to to track and watch over my front yard/ driveway and side yard/ backyard. I know I’m going to have some issues regardless of who I go with since it’s not high end PoE cameras so understood. I’m looking into reolink Argus pt ultra and the Altas pt Altas as well as eufy s340. Either system will be getting a hub. I’m looking for something that will run good off the solar, I want to Install and forget about it as much as possible but be reliable from my phone. Not trying to have to get up and take it down often. Also find with upgrading solar panels. But really want something reliable, good user interface, great night vision/ tracking with low or no light. Something that’s just going to have the least amount of problems. Open to other suggestions and other curious what experiences you have with these systems or other tried and true to you! thank you!

Security camera installation

Hi I want to install a security camera in an underground garage underneath my building to over see my car. I plan to run a Ethernet cable from my apartment to the garage it's about 50 meters, does a standard Poe injector that will be in my apartment will be able to power up the camera? And another question is what type of brand of camera do you recommend? My budget for the camera is about 200 USD

Can I use coax for old security cams for PoE?

The house we bought had some outdoor cameras installed like 17 years ago and there is coax and power ran to each one and since all that is already run to a local area where the old NVR was I was wondering if I can use the existing coax to run PoE over it to my new PoE cameras or do I need run new Ethernet drops?

Security cameras/Systems that don’t have long lags when switching to live view?

I have a Eufy outdoor camera (solar-powered S220, I believe) and a battery-powered Eufy doorbell connected to a HomeBase (not the package-detection model, and I can’t remember the exact model number). I also have two Arlo Pro 2 cameras (VMC4030P-100NAS) with an Arlo Base Station.

Both systems are frustratingly slow when trying to access the live feed. The lag is so long that by the time the camera loads, whatever movement I was trying to check is already gone.

The most annoying part is that both systems seem to miss motion events fairly often, so it’s not even guaranteed that the activity will be recorded for later review.

The video quality isn’t bad. Arlo is definitely better when it comes to motion detection and audio, while Eufy has noticeably better video resolution when it actually activates.

Has anyone experienced this with either system? Any suggestions for improving live-view speed? I checked my wifi and it’s pretty strong, both home bases are directly next to my router.

And if anyone is wondering why I have a mix of brands: I started with Arlo years ago, then about 1.5 years ago after I moved, I bought a four-pack of Eufy cameras and gradually added those to the setup haha. I have one Arlo above my eufy doorbell and one over my back door that’s not trafficked often, mainly for my dog.
