2.5yr old had to go to the ER this morning
She woke up early even for her I was able to get her to snuggle up but she wouldn’t go back to sleep, normal morning she’s off playing or asking for a snack but this morning she was extra snuggly. She told me her belly hurt which usually means she hungry but when I offered to get her a snack she said it wasn’t her belly then should me where it hurt.
It was the top of her diaper like bladder area, it the dawned on me that I hadn’t changed her since she woke up and sure enough she was dry from the night before. I tried getting her to drink some water and she would barely take a sip, after about 10 minutes she was in noticeable discomfort and when I picked her up to just get her a fresh diaper she screamed in pain. I got her set back up in a comfortable position on the couch and called my mom to see if she’d be able to take us to the doctor, in that time the pain got worse and she could walk or be carried without extreme pain.
I called her doctor and she pretty much told me to wait and see and it was probably a stomach bug (we love our doctor she’s great I swear) about 15 minutes after talking to her we decided the ER was our best bet. Carrying her downstairs was torturous as well as putting her in her car seat, my husband dropped us off and when I got in the ER she was hysterical with pain they took us in fast and after the initial check up they attempted to place an IV for fluids and pain medicine before doing a catheter. It took 4 tries to get her IV in and 4 people to hold her still and I even got sprayed with blood at one point.
They got her pain meds and did the catheter and got 2 specimen cups plus some out of her bladder, after more testing she didn’t have a uti and her other tests where fine but she still wasn’t urinating so off to ct scan we went. While tying to do her scan she ripped her IV out and then required 5 doctors/nurses to assist in getting a new IV set up all while screaming she didn’t want to go in the washing machine (ct scanner) in the end I laid on my belly at her head and we got it done and they gave her about 20 stickers cause she was so good.
The ct came back with nothing and ultrasound still showed her retaining more urine then she should at her age, they made a call to a specialist at another hospital because they could find no apparent cause for her not peeing and turns out a virus can attack your bladder and cause urine retention. After another 2 hours she finally peed on her own and after confirming she emptied her bladder via ultrasound we were discharged. I’ve never been so happy to change a wet diaper! Thankfully she’s doing great and loved telling grandma & grandpa about her day today (especially them putting her in a washing machine)! I just had to write this to vent cause holy moly what a day!
