Emotional release from bondage?

I want to share something that happened last night that I’m still processing, and hear if others have experienced something similar or can help me understand what we went through.

My partner and I had spent a long day together in a very deep and honest connection. Late at night I started practicing some basic shibari on her legs while she was scrolling her phone. No agenda, just wanted to make use of the connection and time together while improving my skills. But something shifted in her almost immediately. She became very still and present in a way that I interpreted as her entering subspace.

I started communicating more with her, while touching her skin to guide her deeper into the experience. After a while she whispered that she really needed to go to the bathroom. Instead of releasing her I placed my hand over her bladder and asked quietly: “You really need to go, but you can’t go anywhere. What are you going to do now?”

Something broke open in her. She started moaning, almost like she was close to orgasm, and then suddenly she was crying intensely, in a way I have never seen from her before. She pressed her face against me and held on. I held her, stroked her hair and her back, and just stayed there until it passed.

Afterwards she described it as feeling like an orgasm that became crying instead. Not unpleasant at all, more like something she needed to release, coming from very deep inside her.

The next day she reflected that my question had triggered a memory of not being allowed to have needs as a child. That her needs were always seen as a burden. But this time she was completely helpless and completely safe at the same time.

What strikes me is that she has experienced something similar in therapy. Uncontrollable crying connected to insight and analysis. But this was different. It was pure feeling, with no cognitive filter. Whatever the ropes and the dynamic created between us, it seems to have opened a door to something her body needed to release.

Has anyone experienced emotional releases like this during bondage or in a D/s dynamic?

Questions about subspace

I want to share something that has become the most fascinating aspect of our D/s dynamic and ask for insights from people with more experience.

My wife and I are relatively new to consciously exploring BDSM, although we have been together for almost ten years, married for five, and have always had elements of dominance and submission between us without really understanding what it was. Over the past few weeks everything has shifted and we have gone deeper than I ever imagined possible. I recently talked about this in a post on this subreddit.

What fascinates me most is how quickly and deeply she enters subspace. With very simple means, sustained eye contact, a specific tone of voice, holding her chin, I can watch her descend in real time. Her face relaxes completely, her mouth falls slightly open, and she fixes her gaze on me through half-closed eyes. Her pupils fluctuate in size as she goes deeper, and verbal communication becomes impossible. She can only nod or shake her head. At the deepest levels she has described a complete absence of fear, pain, cold and heat, concepts that simply don’t exist for her there.

We both listened to the podcast “Dom Sub Living” which describes five stages of subspace, and when we discussed it she recognized herself in all five, including the deepest stage of surrender. What surprised me was how spontaneously she reaches these depths. I haven’t guided her there deliberately most of the time and it seems to arise naturally from the trust and presence between us.

We both have long backgrounds in yoga and meditation, which I suspect plays a role. I’ve learned through meditation how to quiet analytical thought and simply be present, and something similar seems to happen for both of us in these moments. I enter what I can only describe as a flow state where I’m hyperaware of every subtle reaction from her, her breathing, small movements in her facial muscles, the dilation of her pupils, and words come naturally without thinking.

My questions for this community are: Is it unusual to reach this depth so quickly, particularly with limited explicit BDSM experience? What should I be aware of when someone goes this deep this naturally? And is the meditation background something others have found relevant to their experience of subspace and domspace?

How a gambling addiction unlocked our BDSM dynamic

I want to tell you a story about something incredible that’s going on in my marriage at this very moment. It involves betrayal, trust, dominance and submission.

Me (M42) and my wife (F45) have been married for 5 years. The relationship has always been full of trust and acceptance, but over the last few years it’s become a bit boring and sexually pretty dry. Intimacy has mainly been limited to foot rubs while watching Netflix and occasional vanilla sex once or twice during ovulation.

About a month ago I found out that my wife has been struggling with a gambling addiction which had spiraled out of control and put her in a pretty significant debt. This put some serious stress on our marriage and I was considering leaving her for the first time. Not mainly because of the money, but because I felt betrayed.

We talked about it and my wife was frankly surprised that I was only considering divorce. In her mind, what she had done was a serious enough breach of trust that any future together should be unthinkable and she was fully prepared to be abandoned. This was also why she had been trying to keep her situation secret until it was no longer manageable.

While I wasn’t fully ready to give up on us, something shifted – in how I saw her, and in how I saw my own role in the relationship. I started setting up clearer rules and demanding more from her. Both inside and outside the bedroom. I could tell that this was a turn on for her and I felt like I was using my anger as an excuse to scratch the surface of fantasies that I’ve always kept buried because they felt too taboo.

She shared that she really liked psychological dominance and something inside me clicked. I made a few changes to my body language, my tone and my gaze and suddenly the whole dynamic changed. I was no longer asking for her permission, I demanded obedience and she complied. I could immediately tell that she seemed calmer and happier. She admitted that this had been a secret fantasy of hers but she never believed it could be possible. I feel like I’ve unlocked something that always felt too dangerous to explore outside of fantasy.

We have been tried BDSM dynamics earlier in the relationship but it never felt natural, probably because the foundational trust wasn’t there yet. The whole situation around her debt ended up strengthening the trust between us by showing her that I didn’t leave her and me that she could handle the confrontation and my demands.

Where we are now I honestly think that the gambling debt is a small price to pay for what it helped unlock. My only concern is how we can develop this dynamic in a healthy and sustainable way.

Yesterday I had her take the test from BDSMTest.org and our results are remarkably compatible. Perhaps because we are developing this dynamic together, or maybe we’ve always been more compatible than we knew.
